@arkadiasi
I have a question is there any symbolism of the colors with the other three supreme ghosts like green lantern black water white no face? Like with hua Chang?
Yep yep!Â
To go over each of them:
White No Face
Like I mentioned in the previous post about Hualianâs colour symbolism, in Chinese culture, white is mainly associated with purity and death/mourning. This duality is perfect for someone who is simultaneously the first Calamity recognized by his laugh-crying mask & the Emperor of Heaven known for his virtue and wisdom. They represent the âheavenlyâ and âdeadlyâ sides of one person, but neither fully convey who the Crown Prince of Wuyong was. It is noteworthy that white can also symbolize new beginnings and starting from a blank slate. Thatâs exactly what the prince wanted after losing his original self to overwhelming tragedy. He âdiedâ and was ârebornâ by deliberately crafting the personas of Jun Wu and White-No-Face through deceit and destruction.
Moreover, White No Face sharing Xie Lianâs signature colour further accentuates his position as Xie Lianâs foil and how far he could have fallen had it not been for moments of kindness that protected the last bit of purity within him. Both White No Face and Xie Lian exhibit the duality associated with the colour white. But while Xie Lian was able to reconcile the beauty and the pain of his life within himself and recover early on, Jun Wu/White No Face was intent on keeping those opposite qualities separated through his divine and demon persona. But to reconnect with his original self and most importantly his own humanity, he needed to gain a sense of unity between the two extremes.Â
Thatâs why it is fitting that his story ended with him finding freedom by reconciling with Mei Nianqing, the one person whoâs personally seen him at his best and worst yet still cared for him, at Mount Tonglu. They represent the last remnants of the home heâs tried to hide for a millenia, embodying both his past failures and the glimmer of hope that lies ahead for him. With all that said, Iâd say coming to terms with the duality and complexity of human nature would be the main message shown through Jun Wuâs colour motif.
Black Water Submerging Boats
He Xuanâs own given name immediately show his connection with black as his colour motif (xuan/ç is one way of saying âblackâ or âmysteriousâ). Heâs a low-profile, enigmatic person hiding a dark secret thatâs a prime example of the corruption underneath the splendour of Heaven. Additionally, heâs a water demon and according to whatâs in the Five Elements system of Taoism, the element of water is actually associated with the colour black.Â
Within Chinese culture in general, black is viewed as an unlucky colour, being associated with evil, sadness, suffering and all that bad stuff. Thatâs painfully fitting for He Xuanâs situation. Even though heâs not an inherently evil person, the sheer suffering brought upon by the misfortune he experienced took such a toll on him that it led him to commit evil deeds for the sake of revenge, which led him to hurt and lose his closest friend in the process. Instead of valuing the connection beside him, he prioritized his hatred and ended up contributing to a cycle of suffering by involving the innocent Shi Qingxuan.Â
He Xuan having black as his signature colour is also something that underlines his foiling with Hua Cheng, given the latterâs connection with the auspicious colour red. The unlucky He Xuan was driven by vengeance to reach Supreme status in contrast to the lucky Hua Cheng who was driven by love. Both were born impoverished and affected by a switch of fate, but while He Xuanâs life was ruined beyond repair by a strangerâs selfish wish, Hua Chengâs life took a turn for the better by a meeting with a saviour who nullified his curse from the Star of Solitude. They both fulfilled their life goal and grew to embody the colour associated with themâŚ
Thereâs much more that could be said in regard to their foiling, but thatâs about the gist of it for their colour symbolism.
Night Touring Green Lantern
Now for last and certainly least (:P), letâs look at Qi Rong the Green Lantern. Well...when it comes to âthis ancestorâ and his colour symbolism, itâs actually not as clear-cut as the other three. Green in China is traditionally connected with qualities such as cleanliness, nature, life and hope...not exactly words one would tend to think of for Qi Rong XD
Not at first glance anyway.Â
Despite how messy and crass Qi Rong is, his subplot ultimately does involve him undergoing positive character development through his bond with Guzi. His ending does enforce the message about how people can change for the better through the meaningful connections in their lives. That at least makes Qi Rong a somewhat hopeful character, especially when considering the fact that his sacrifice is what gives a child like Guzi the chance to live and let him know that his life matters.
Moreover, another interesting meaning for green in Chinese culture is that itâs a symbol of infidelity due to the ancient custom of men with unfaithful wives wearing green hats. For Qi Rong, this could be applicable when thinking of how he went from Xie Lianâs most extreme devotee to his loudest anti. His loyalty only lasted so long as Xie Lian was the invincible âCousin Crown Princeâ.Â
Overall, in a sense, I find that Qi Rong not fully living up to his colour motif like the three other Calamities works to highlight the fact that heâs technically not like the rest of them, being in reality just a wrath-level ghost ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ

[13/02] JunMei in a kiss ON A SCAR
[Everyone in Heaven is standing around a broken coffee maker]
Jun Wu: So. Who broke it? Iâm not mad, I just want to know.
Xie Lian: âŚI did. I broke it.
Jun Wu: No. No, you didnât. General Pei?
Pei Ming: Donât look at me. Look at Shi Wu Du.
Shi Wu Du: What?! I didnât break it.
Pei Ming: Huh, thatâs weird. Howâd you even know it was broken?
Shi Wu Du: Because itâs sitting right in front of us, and itâs broken.
Pei Ming: Suspicious.
Shi Wu Du: No, itâs not!
Feng Xin: If it matters, probably not, but Mu Qing was the last one to use it.
Mu Qing: Liar! I donât even drink that crap!
Feng Xin: Oh really? Then what were you doing by the coffee cart earlier?
Mu Qing: I use the wooden stirrers to push back my cuticles. Everyone knows that, Feng Xin!
Xie Lian: Okay, letâs not fight. I broke it. Let me pay for it, Your Majesty.
Jun Wu: No! Who broke it!?
Shi Wu Du: Your MajestyâŚLing Wenâs been awfully quiet.
Ling Wen: REALLY?!
[Everyone starts arguing]
Jun Wu, later:Â I broke it. I burned my hand, so I punched it. I predict 10 minutes from now theyâll be at each otherâs throats with warpaint on their faces and a pig head on a stick. Good. It was getting a little chummy around here.

Do you think ZhuZhi-Lang is a prototype Wen Ning? What was the narrative point of him dying in the end?
Hello Anon!
Iâd definitely say that Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ning are two socially awkward âmonsterâ boys cut from the same cloth. Zhuzhi-Langâs character does seem to provide the inspiration for Wen Ning as his MDZS counterpart, with their arcs even centering around similar hardships yet yielding contrasting endings.
At just a glance, in Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ning, we see two young men who despite being belonging to the most powerful clans are still outcasts derided by society: Zhuzhi-Lang for his hideous snake-man appearance and Wen Ning for being a timid stutterer, a âWen-dogâ and of course, the much-feared Ghost General. Adding to Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ningâs negative public images is the fact that they are the notorious right-hand men (and wingmen!) of someone regarded as societyâs villain. And of course, we know that those so-called villains, Tianlang-Jun and Wei Wuxian, are far more complex than what society passes on as âfactsâ. Much like their right-hand men, both Wei Wuxian and Tianlang-Jun are misunderstood figures who, despite not being entirely innocent, have been shown to actually be victims of society first.
On this point, whatâs observed through all these characters is the ever-recurring MXTX theme that the world, and people in particular, arenât so black-and-white. Whatâs passed on as âtruthâ often isnât accurate nor complete, and humanity exists amongst outcasts who are dehumanized. Sometimes, perhaps unsurprisingly, the ones who are able to recognize that fact most clearly are the very people considered âevilâ by society. (Outcasts unite!)
Through the important relationships Zhuzhi-Lang and Wen Ning have with Tianlang-Jung and Wei Wuxian respectively, we see the sides of them that tend to be ignored by society, arguably precisely because of how human those qualities are.Â
Namely, they are notably two people struggling with their sense of self-worth after a lifetime of being looked down uponâŚGiven that, it is understandable how they both canât help but become (perhaps excessively) attached towards those who treat them kindly. For Zhuzhi-Lang, being nonchalantly taken in & given a human form/name by Tianlang-Jun and inadvertently saved by Shen Qianqiu was more than enough to earn them both a lifetime of selfless loyalty from him. For Wen Ning, the simple act of Wei Wuxian praising and standing up for him at one time left such an impact that it led him to risk his own safety to help Wei Wuxian during the Lotus Pier massacre and subsequently become one of his most devoted allies/followers.
As quoted by Zhuzhi-Lang, the phrase âa drop of kindness is repaid as a gushing springâ appears to be the philosophy that these two are dedicated to following.
