could you see adam brody for the librarian?
we definitely can! admin devon in particular says hell yes, so go for it!
are you guys open for apps again?
yes, we are! i should’ve clarified but we’re currently accepting applications for the journalist, the student, the psychologist, the photographer, and the librarian! we’re looking towards accepting applications either a week from now or when we have an application for most of the skeletons, whichever comes first!
𝚆𝙴𝙻𝙲𝙾𝙼𝙴 𝙱𝙰𝙲𝙺 𝚃𝙾 𝙰𝚁𝙺𝙷𝙰𝙼. the city of arkham is unlike any other. there’s something about this place — those few who have seen beyond the veil call it cursed, evil, godless. horrors haunt arkham’s underbelly and come out at night to prey on unsuspecting innocents. thankfully for arkham, there are a group of eight investigators that are trying to keep arkham safe by hunting down that which goes bump in the night. but as they pursue the darkness of arkham in order to eradicate it, they must be cautious. there’s much to lose; death is not the worst outcome for them, no, not when madness lurks at every corner, waiting to engulf them.
arkham is an eight person roleplay hosted on discord. it focuses on a group of investigators that solves cases about the horrors haunting arkham. evil wizards, cursed roads, vengeful ghosts, and more all await these investigators as they try to keep the unsuspecting population of their city safe.
Age Range: 30 years old and older
Occupation: Part time university student
Face Claim: Up to Player (must be a person of color)
ACT ONE
Your life was four walls for as long as you could remember. When you are young, you think you feel a spark of potential but it is extinguished by your mother who needed you to love her the most. Later, she needed you for more. You laid awake at night, wondering how your life came to this. In trying to be the daughter your mother wanted, you lost yourself. You wore the skin of another for her fickle love. It did not fit well, sometimes when you moved a certain way you could see the seams. Is it really a wonder then, that you tired of it? Tired of staring at the seams? You didn’t think when you left, you just left. Then came the letter from Excelsior. Then came that night.
INTERMISSION
Theories: about the nature of the thing. And of the soul. Because people die. The fear: that nothing survives. The greater fear: that something does.
ACT TWO
Your mother is gone now. The suit you wore for her, ashes. You are trying to be a person in a way you’ve never tried before. How ironic that the worst night of your life led to the death of one you and the birth of another you. You think you like this one better. Sometimes fear eats at her like a ravenous animal but she knows to think, knows to tell herself: you can get through this, you have gone through worse. She is not the silly little thing from before. But you have doubts about personhood sometimes. Wouldn’t it be easier to curl up and stay in one place forever? To finally give into the underbelly of Arkham? Maybe, maybe. You won’t allow yourself to find out.
PERSONAL INVENTORY
Detect Enchantment: Spell. 20 minutes. Allows caster to detect the glow of curses, Evil Eyes, and other harmful enchantments that have been cast on human, animals, or crops. A simple chant is conducted over the object in question. If a curse or a hex is present, a tearing pain is felt in the caster’s stomach.
Minor Illusion: Spell. 1 minute. You create a sound or an image of an object within a 30 foot range that lasts 1 minute.
Age Range: 28 years old and older
Occupation: Psychologist
Face Claim: Up to Player (must be a person of color)
ACT ONE
You were not the first one of your family inducted into this group. You weren’t even there that night at Excelsior, you were tucked away on Miskatonic’s campus. Your life has been led by semi-simple aspirations and your greatest basic desire — to help others. You were going to do that your own way. Then your mother died. Everything about this little group of hers came to light then and you found yourself at a crossroads: would you continue on your own path or continue your mother’s legacy? In all honesty, you chose the latter not just because of her legacy but because she was killed by the monsters she hunted. You couldn’t let them be knowing that.
INTERMISSION
The world wants to be reborn. The smell of death is in the air. Nothing new comes without death.
ACT TWO
Maybe there is a reason your mother kept you away from the underbelly. Maybe she knew it would awaken what it did within you. You have found yourself to be stronger than you thought possible, steel beneath flesh. Still, there are things that haunt you, your mother’s legacy, for one. You loved her but she follows you like a cloud here among her friends, now your friends. Your spot was hers first and sometimes you think the team sees your addition more as the loss of her. It seems like your mother’s name shines too bright sometimes. Not even these insecurities can stop you and they know it. They come like a tide and you part them like Moses did the sea.
PERSONAL INVENTORY
Create Mist of R’lyeh: Spell. Instantaneous. Causes a dense-mist in a large egg-shaped volume to appear in front of the caster for a few moments.
Acid Splash: Spell. Instantaneous. The caster hurls a bubble of acid at a target within a 60 foot range.
Age Range: 30 years old and older
Occupation: Photographer
Face Claim: Up to Player
Note: Fraternal twin sibling of the Librarian
ACT ONE
Strange little kid, one-half of those odd twins. You were always too quiet, too ready to curl into the shadows and stay there, watching. Your parents were unsettled by your antics. Then came the day you could no longer stand the shadows — the night you met the Thing. It nearly drove you mad, bearing witness to something the mind cannot possibly imagine. You came into the light but all it did was make your silence more obvious. People recoiled from you now as much as you did from them and you liked it that way. You became half a person but that was okay, your twin could be the person for both of you. Until they couldn’t. Until Excelsior.
INTERMISSION
No one knew any of this. And then I lived. I kept being alive when I should have been burning: I was Joan, I was Lazarus.
ACT TWO
You are still half a person but no one minds it anymore. Sometimes you can scrounge up enough to be three-quarters of a person. You try not to let this affect you. You know your mind is fragile sometimes, those nights that are filled by nightmares of the Thing, but you are strong. You know that despite the nightmares and the headaches, you must continue. Even before this, you continued. Now at least you have the comfort of knowing what made you half mad could have killed you but didn’t. That is your resilience. You are both like and not like the others, you want to know and protect just as much as they do, but you will do anything for the latter. Anything.
PERSONAL INVENTORY
Switchblade: Item. Weapon. If you succeed a fight roll by 2 or more, you get +1 damage
Lucky Cigarette Case: Item. Charm. Allows you to re-roll dice after having failed a Check Stealth test once everyday. +1 Will
Age Range: 30 years old and older
Occupation: Librarian
Face Claim: Up to Player
Note: Fraternal twin sibling of the Photographer
ACT ONE
If someone were to call you the other half of the odd twins, it’d be the first time. You were always the twin, the one everyone liked. You weren’t as strange as your counterpart, at least not where they could see. The truth was strangeness had always fascinated you. You read books about oddities and sought out stores your parents wouldn’t have wanted you to step foot in. With all this, it was a surprise that the Thing did not show itself to you. Still, you saw it through your twin’s eye, as vivid as if it had been you witnessing it. And so it drove you partly mad in a way too, in a way that led you to Excelsior despite being the necessary “reasonable” person of you two.
INTERMISSION
I saw the dark of the night and I wanted it. Desire for a dark thing was a dark thing in me.
ACT TWO
You share something with the oddities in the world. Both you and they are part of this world but do not quite belong. You no longer have to be the person for your twin, now you are free to be the other odd one. Your parents wonder with sadness at your transformation; you rejoice. You want to be free of everything but ancient tomes and arcane knowledge. You do not have what you now know to be a reality, magic, but you do well enough without it. The rest of the team indulges your tarot card readings and numerology. You may not have magic the way others do, but you do not feel like a regular person. You look at the underbelly of Arkham and you are not afraid.
PERSONAL INVENTORY
Archaic Glyphs: Item. Occult. Tome. Untranslated book. +1 Lore
Rabbit’s Foot: Item. Charm. Allows you to re-roll dice after having failed a Check Lore test once a day.
Age Range: 30 years old and older
Occupation: Journalist
Face Claim: Up to Player (must be a person of color)
ACT ONE
You were a child when your brother died. You were still a child when he returned. Everyone told you it was the grief making you imagine things, but you knew it wasn’t. It couldn’t be. It felt so real that night you opened your eyes and saw him. He had to be with you. Your inquisitive and demanding nature aided you in this determination to prove it was your brother. Soon, your parent’s understanding turned to anger. You silenced yourself for them, turned to other pursuits, but never forgot. You pursued stories in the day while chasing after leads at night. Leads of spirits, oddities, a veil in your little city. It all led you to Excelsior. It all led you to that accursed night.
INTERMISSION
Some part of me still caught between your yellow teeth. I wasn’t ready. The idea of sorrow. The concept of blank.
ACT TWO
You’re a success for a reason; like a dog chasing a bone, they say — relentless. It follows you in these cases, the drive. You let the dog in you run free there, it is the only place it has freedom these days. You cannot write about Arkham’s underbelly. No one would believe you. More than that, it is too much for the human mind to conceive. You can conceive it because of the brother you know you saw. And even if you didn’t, what does it matter now? It helps you stare at these monsters in the face and not flinch. The reality of the situation is you will die doing this. You cannot turn your eye to the veil. They should’ve called you Sisyphus instead.
PERSONAL INVENTORY
Cherished Keepsake: Item. You carry it with you after all this time. Why? +1 Will
Celaeno Fragments: Item. Tome. A book of books. +1 Lore
Age Range: 30 years old and older
Occupation: Dilettante
Face Claim: Up to Player
ACT ONE
You were a trophy to be paraded around. The perfect little child. Perfect fell apart soon after the swirls of magic started twinning around your fingers. No doctor could grant an explanation to satisfy your parents. So, afraid and betrayed, they locked you away. You fell into different interests while playing Rapunzel. Every so often, you’d try to break out just to show them they couldn’t keep you like a doll. There was always the thought: but they are my family. That thought eroded over time until one day you could bear it no longer. That’s what you had been doing all these years, smiling close mouthed to hide your teeth. That night at Excelsior caught your vicious bite.
INTERMISSION
Listen to me: I was a child who only wanted to heal things — now, I want to be an abomination.
ACT TWO
For all that you’re a pariah to your family, they refuse to disown you, if only because the shame would be too big. That’s better for you, you get none of the hassle and all of the money. The latter helps the most in this fight against the monstrous. You think you see yourself in these monsters sometimes, think you see what your parents saw all those years ago. But these thoughts are quickly expelled. They are better replaced by contemplations of art, music, and the arcane. Your team helps you in this way, keeping you busy with enough cases to stop you from doubting the image in the mirror. Then come the nights. Sometimes you can’t help but fall apart.
PERSONAL INVENTORY
Fist of Yog-Sothoth: Spell. Instantaneous. Causes a massive invisible force to hit a single target. The caster must be able to see the target.
Fire Bolt: Spell. Instantaneous. The caster hurls a mote of fire at a target within a 120 foot range.
