man y’all remember when the avengers movie came out and everyone headcanoned that all the avengers would live together in the tower and had all these cute posts about various fun ways they could interact and then the movies literally never had any of them even be friends

I want to state, for the record, that “all the avengers would live together in the tower” wasn’t collective headcanon, it was canon. The very last scene of Avengers (2012), the one they left us on, is Tony redesigning the tower, designing a living area for each Avenger. That was, canonically, what was supposed to happen, in canon, and they just changed their minds and decided to… not. For whatever goldarn reason.

Disney bought Marvel in 2009.

From my quick research, phase 1, which started pre-Disney, had a 6-person panel of experts who made sure the movies worked with each other and were faithful to the comics with half the members being active comics writers and editors.

Phase 2…possibly did not. It’s not clear. I can’t find anything about the panel in stuff written about phase 2, but research for phase 3 says the experts were still being consulted up to that point 3. But Phase 2 did rely more heavily on Joss Whedon as the guy keeping the stories straight because he was given Age of Ultron. So the pieces had to be maneuvered to fit the story he wanted told. And he wanted Age of Ultron to be a standalone that didn’t need background viewing to be understood. Which meant there couldn’t be development of relationships outside of that movie.

By phase 3 in 2015, the MCU was answering to Disney and not Marvel. The experts were gone. And none of the avengers except maybe Cap and Black Widow or Black Widow and Hawkeye liked each other. I’m not sure they even respected each other.

The MCU is currently on phase 6.

The Avengers being friends and living together is comics canon. The phase that was most heavily controlled by the people who make the comics implied it would be canon to the MCU. But the more Disney got involved, the worse the relationships between the avengers in the MCU became.

#MCU#Marvel MCU#and#Disney MCU#are very different beasts#even if Fiege was involved in both#you can see Disney’s claws slowly sink in and destroy things#it’s their cynical rejection of sincerity#the original movies were sincere#you could believe that the Avengers would become a permanent team#you could see the beginnings of deep friendships#you’d be forgiven if you couldn’t believe the current MCU characters can stand being in a room together for more than five minutes
