  Okay, so things were definitely out of hand. Harley was just about to ask this guy where he’d heard of her when she got a faceful of fist. Her reflexes were good enough to keep her jaw and nose in one piece, but the blow definitely landed. That was gonna leave a mark, too.

  “What’s the big deal?” She yelled as she did a quick backflip to put some distance between her and the loon here. “What kinda guy goes straight for a lady’s face? Ya heard ‘a me, but ya ain’t ever heard ‘a manners? Sheesh, somebody must ‘a flunked outta gentleman’s school.” Great, Harley would end up getting into a fight when she decided to leave her actual non-prank weapons at home. “Did they at least teach ya to introduce yourself ta somebody after ya try knockin’ em silly?” What a freak. Masks, even without their capes, really were the worst. Harley just couldn’t meet anyone nice, could she?

“Oh, what, you gonna tell me you don’t remember me?” The Arkham Knight moved quickly, getting in close, ready to throw another punch if he needed to. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised -- nothing’s the same in this damn place. So I suppose I’ll forgive you for that one.” Despite his words, he seemed entirely bent on hurting her as much as possible. So much for manners.

“You’re looking good, Quinn. As good as the pyscho chick ever looks, anyway. Added a fresh layer of face paint, finally? Sweetened up the deal?” His voice was slowly escalating as he approached her, his fists clenched in genuine rage. “You turned me into who I am today, so I suppose I should give you the honor. I’m the Arkham Knight, but by the end of tonight, I’m gonna be your worst nightmare.”

With that, he drew his bb gun out of its holster, pointing it directly at Harley’s face. This was a gamble, but one he was ready to make.

HABIT didn’t really care what this armored guy thought. He has his reasons for being rather pissed, but it’s not like the entity wanted to know anything about it. He simply smiled as the masked man pulled the trigger and fired a measly BB pellet directly at HABIT’s forehead. He snickered quietly and shook his head.

“You know, even if that was a real gun, I still wouldn’t have flinched. If you die here, you just come back.” He might as well leave the guy those words of wisdom for now.

And then HABIT was decked square in the face with a metal fist, causing him to fall backwards onto the pavement. He stayed still as blood started to leak from his nose until he grunted and sat up, using his shirt to stop the bleeding a bit. This guy really does have issues, doesn’t he. “Well, there goes being pacifistic, I guess. But I’ll just give you another word of advice.”  HABIT slowly stood up, dusted off his jeans and snapped his fingers at a wandering civilian who suddenly turned to face the armored man.

“Your rules don’t apply here.” HABIT and the civilian spoke in tandem with a sudden distorted voice (not as filtered as the attacker’s, of course) applying on both ends, and the possessed random person lunged to tackle the man down to the ground as HABIT ran away, cackling.

Hypnosis -- or was it some other form of brainwashing? It didn’t matter, as it wasn’t anything the Knight hadn’t seen before. Pyg had done it, The Joker had done it, so many people have tried something like this before, and usually with a whole lot more people. Without even a second thought, the Arkham Knight drew back, then kicked his new assailant full-force in the face, stopping his lunge dead-on. Stupid and undisciplined. That wasn’t gonna get anyone anywhere.

More importantly, now he had something else to ask his fleeing ‘friend.’ Running full-speed after the cackling man, the Knight moved with unreal agility in that armor, catching up to the man as best as he could. When he was finally in position, he sped to the side, running up on the wall to quickly get around his target before landing in front of him.

Not wasting a second, he reached out, grabbing the othe rman by the neck and shoving him against the nearby wall.

“What the hell do you mean, ‘just come back’? You saying something like, ‘everyone’s immortal here’?” It sounded insane, like something some cultist would say, but in a place like this, he couldn’t be too careful. “Talk!”

Loki nodded sagely. “Ah. Outlaw. Or at least, if you’re not, you should be careful of what you say, lest they sound like a threat.” He glanced up at the armored stranger with a disarming smile, as if not worried at all. In reality, he made a mental note of his intentions.

Now, he wasn’t a stranger to being sized up. And despite being Asgardian and well-trained, he wasn’t fooling himself. The armor of the other was formidable, but considering he thought that Loki’s words were superstition… He only had one spell, but that particular one was all he needed. Slowly, deliberately, he circled the stranger. Always careful to face him.

“Very well, I’ll give you that. None of us are locals. But me, followers? How flattering.” A hand that was behind his back came up to rest on his chest. “No, I’m telling you I’m simply a man plucked out of his world. Whether or not I was important there, it has no bearing on how others see me here.” He waved the hand and scowled. “And don’t call it a helmet of doom. I would rather not think of Doom here. Try ‘ruin’ or ‘misfortune.’”

“Actually, I was just wondering. Sometimes these things step outside of the boundaries of logic, you know?” Oh, was he being circled, now? The Knight could’ve laughed at the irony of the situation. To think that someone he had plans for would end up turning the tables like this...actually, he should’ve expected it from the get-go, from a weirdo who wears a crown like that.

He’d gotten to used to dealing with more normal people in his time away from Gotham.

“And you’re telling me you ain’t scared of wearing that thing? Guess you’re pretty brave, then.” Step for step, the Arkham Knight followed his movements, always making sure he was facing the man. It was like a dumb game of cat and mouse, in which neither of them knew who was the cat. How stupid. “Well, then, I guess you’re pretty useless in the end, just like all the others. These ‘scientists’ sure have built something else with this little establishment...”

He didn’t want to start anything, but if this guy was gonna force his hand...

“You think you know me. You think you know everything.” Damian pulled his hood up and allowed the fabric of his cape to shelter his body. It’s more protective qualities had been negated, but he doubted he had been allowed proper bullets anyway.  “But you’re wrong.”

“Father would never have allowed me the mantle, thought I was too dangerous and unstable. I had to make him see me as a potential partner. I stole Todd’s uniform, you know him? The first of father’s many failures. It wouldn’t be until Grayson took the cowl that I was finally trained as Robin, and you know something, uggo?” He stepped onto a ledge. “I don’t intend to continue being a Robin, or even an offshoot like Drake. I will be Batman. It’s my destiny.”

He leaped off, his cape billowing around and obscuring his body as he ran into the shadows, an attack plan already in the works.

For the first time in a good long while, the Knight was surprised.

And not because of this small Wayne’s actions, either. It was something else. His sentiment, his words...they reminded the Arkham Knight of something far too familiar. Something which put the man into a permanent state of disgust, disgust which biled up his throat like a cruel serpent.

The Knight tapped his scanners quickly, out of instinct. Nope, those didn’t work. Cursing under his breath, he looked around by sight. A Robin like this wouldn’t have ran away just now -- not if he were claiming such big things. Which meant he was preparing for something else. Ok. The smartest move, then, would be to step away from the edges of the buildings and to watch the clouds.

“So, Dick’s the new Batman, huh?” His voice echoed through the night air, filling in the space with garbled cruelty. “I admit, I had a soft spot for him. A shame he’s gonna have to die, too, now.”

  After being in the grand ol’ Hive City as long as she had, it wasn’t exactly hard to pick out the new guys from the old guys. Then again maybe it was the new thing to stand in the dark corner of a street staring up at the sky? 

  “Hey, bub! Ya might not wanna stand there like that. Back in my old city, that was a good way ‘a askin’ for a boot to the face. But I mean hey, if that’s the kinda thing you’re in to, I ain’t gonna judge ya.” She approached him as casually as she did every other joe schmoe in the city; hands in her pockets and a spring in her step. Things very rarely got out of hand, and when they did she could always rely on Beatrice the second, her trusty squeaky toy mallet. “Ta each weirdo his own, right?”

The figure didn’t move until she was close, real close. He just stood there, like a statue. This woman. This woman. This woman. She approached, as if she didn’t suspect a thing. Oh, how he boiled. How he seethed. She was close now. Closer....just nearly close enough....

“Hello, Quinn.”

And when he was just a few feet away, he spoke. Turning to face her, he met the woman with glowing, synthetic blue eyes, cold and cruel in their appearance. Without another warning, he drew back a fist, sending it flying through the air directly at her face.

“Things’re about to get a whole lot weirder for you.”

“Shut up!” Damian contracted his abdominal muscles, gripped the hilt tight and managed to fling himself up, hooked a leg into its stupid, dumb neck and mounted his shoulders. He tightened his thighs, ready to break the neck through the armor. No! A birdarang to the eye should do it! By instinct, Damian opened the according pocket, but was met with nothing. Empty..

He froze. He couldn’t kill, couldn’t incapacitate. What was left.

“Shut up…” He whispered. What would Grayson do? “You…You’re wrong.” 

Damian slumped. Defecting had worked with Nobody, but unlike with Nobody, Damian couldn’t keep the charade up. Bruce Wayne had cared for him, trained him and guided him. Damian scoffed and dismounted, kicking off of its back and landing a ways away.

“He’s my father, you idiot. All other Robins are inferior, replaceable and interchangeable, but I am his blood.”

“There you go again, following his one rule like a good boy.” He’d felt that -- for a moment, he’d felt killing intent. But the kid had went ahead and suppressed that. It’s what he would have wanted. And now there was this. The Arkham Knight’s cold, modified laughter filled the air like a curse, the sound of a monster who had just won the lottery.

“You know, I guessed Bruce would do something like this. Have a kid and shove him into life as his little ‘protege?’ That’s just like him. Keeps his life tidy, makes things easier for him.” The Knight turned around, facing the boy directly. “Plus, it gives him his own little Wayne to boss around on the field -- he loves that, you know? You can say you’re better all you want, but you’re still a Robin. Don’t you know what that word means yet?”

Pulling his gun out of its holster, the armored figure raised his hand to point it straight at Robin. For a moment, it seemed like the synthetic eyes on his visor had narrowed.

“Last chance. What’s your name, Wayne?”

He had done enough tailing to know when he was being tailed. It didn’t help that his follower was quite conspicuous. Nevertheless, Loki was confidence that he could whisper a spell faster if worse came to worse. So long as he was alert.

So when the stranger finally spoke to him, he cracked a grin. “Sorry–are you using a voice manipulator?” Loki asked, leaning forward with his hands behind his back. “…If you are, that’s actually quite clever. Most vigilantes or masked outlaws don’t bother–which is being a bit reckless with their identities, if you ask me.”

He tilted his head to the side and tapped on one of the horns with a painted black nail. “This? It’s a curse. ‘Whosoever wears this helm shall be doomed to ruin.’ Very sinister.” Not at all the truth, but his helm was nearly stolen from him earlier this week and he was not looking for a repeat. Besides, he wanted to see the stranger’s reaction. “I’m not from here. Thanks for the compliment though.”

“Doomed to ruin? I guess that means that, according to your own dumb superstitions, you’re gonna end up somewhere real bad sometime soon, huh?” The quip was delivered coldly and quickly in retaliation to the other man’s claim. The Knight decided not to comment on his voice modulator -- he was clearly a smart fellow, that question was good as rhetorical. 

Sighing, the Arkham Knight folded his arms, looking his target over, head to toe. Skinny little guy, and he didn’t look like he could hold his own in a fight. Probably wasn’t expecting one. But, according to what he’d said, he was foreign. Didn’t deny what the Knight had asked, either.

“....From what I get, none of us are from here. Doesn’t stop people from getting followers. Some people like dumb superstitions. How ‘bout you? You’re telling me you’re just some unimportant guy, walking around in a ‘helmet of doom’?”

Seems like today was the day for new arrivals. Quite of confused people walking around, looking for answers, and to be quite frank, HABIT wanted none of that. He would, however, look. Spy on the ones who were trying to make sense of what the hell was going on.

Then he turned around, and was met with a gun to the face. Usually, the demon would scoff and roll his eyes. But then the armored man spoke. He literally just arrived, then. Which means that gun of his isn’t going to do much (especially to a demonic entity). But he should at least play along.

“Taaake it easy there, Mister Cosplay,” HABIT nonchalantly spoke while raising his hands up in surrender. “Pointing guns at people in this city can lead to unforseen consequences. Anyways. Ya wanna get outta here, dont’cha? Well, I would if I could– Nah, lemme rephrase that.” The man lowered his hands. “I would if such an act was possible. These white-coats are smart as fuck, and they aren’t gonna let anyone out. Them’s the breaks, too bad, so sad, that’s all folks.” He knows this king of person’s type. He’d fire that toy at any second. And the surprise will be very… amusing.

Of course he had the luck of being met with some sort of smartass. The Knight almost would have laughed, if he weren’t so bewildered. This man was having a gun pointed at their face and they didn’t even budge a centimeter in shock. What the hell is going on here?

“...If you’re telling me the truth, then I guess I’m not gonna have much use for you, huh?”

With that cold finality, the Arkham Knight shrugged and pulled the trigger, the blast putting a bullet straight through his victim’s head. That’ll teach him to--....wait. That wasn’t a bullet, actually. It was a bb pellet, and it had bounced off of the man’s head with a quiet smack. The Knight had just shot a bb gun, explaining why the weapon felt so light in his hand, at a bystander who had just told him some of the worst news of his life.

Everything sucks.

Letting out a sigh, the man holstered his gun. “Tough luck, looks like. At least until I get some better gear.” Then, looking back up at the man, he shrugged again. “Too bad.”

With just that as warning, he moved like lightning, acting to deck the man in the face with a clenched fist.

       Barbara watched he other’s foot hit the man’s neck, her face contorting in shock as she let out a gasp. She absolutely never killed anyone. It was what they stood for as the protectors of Gotham. She frowned deeply, eyebrows knit as she shot a glare toward him. Intimidating and large as he was, she wasn’t about to let that slide.

       “We don’t kill! Ever!” She turned and went about tying up any other living bad guys with rope she’d procured. Not as great as the stuff she’d had back in Burnside, but she couldn’t complain; at least it was something. She didn’t exactly have the heart to talk about Batman at the moment now that he was gone, but she pushed through it. “I haven’t fought alongside Batman much since I picked up the cowl again. I’ve been on my own in Burnside for a while now. Different part of Gotham, but still enough trouble that I stay busy most days.”

       There it was again. There was a snide comment about her ability to walk. What was happening? Was she being paranoid? Barbara bit her lip and stood again, looking up at him and crossing her arms. “Look, I don’t know you but you seem to know me. And if you knew me so well you’d know I’m not looking to get anywhere. I never have been. I care about saving people and making sure no one gets hurt like–” She glanced downward, rephrasing her sentence. “That no one gets hurt. That’s not going to stop just because I got kidnapped to this weird city. It probably goes double, if I’m being honest, all these people were taken from their homes. And…Batman’s not here…that I know of. I just know that Robin’s here.”

This time, he did laugh. A cold, short chuckle, which just sounded like more garbled madness when put through his vocal filter.

“Right, his one rule. I’d say I’d forgotten, but that’d be me lying. There’s nothing he liked more than holding himself back, right? Anything for his creed. Anything for his work.” It was definitely palatable this time around -- the hatred in his voice ran down the spine and cut through the bone. Whoever the Knight was, it didn’t matter -- what was clear was that he hated the Batman, and hated everything he stood for. It wasn’t a matter of just hating a person -- it was hating their very existence, cursing their name for their very life. “Well, I’ve got news for you, Barb. He doesn’t care about saving people. That’s second. You’re second, and Robin’s second, everything is second when it comes to his big promise.”

His fists clenched and unclenched as he spoke, tightening every time ‘he’ was mentioned. The Arkham Knight wanted nothing more than to ruin his nemesis, here and now -- put the enemy to eternal rest and find peace at last. But it looked like that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.

“It’s gonna eat you up one of these days. One of these days, you’ll understand that he was wrong. The only way to make it stop is culling it -- just like he should have started so long ago.”

Underneath the cape, Damian’s hands itched for a weapon. A birdarang, smoke pellets, anything, but all he had was the wooden sword and it did little to calm him.

He gritted his teeth, his own anger bubbling to the surface as that thing dared to utter his father’s name. To slander it with false accusations and misplaced resentment. Sure, he’d heard of his greatest failures, of times he had let others down or gotten them killed, but as far as Damian was concerned, the man had saved him and had given him a real home.

“I am Robin.”

His voice hung soft in the air, out of place in this city and out of place in this situation.

“Son of Batman.”

Like a bullet, Damian charged, a mad scream emanating from him as he launched himself in the air and brought his toy of a sword onto the thing’s shoulder.

“And I am above all other previous Robins!”

Oh my g--you have to be kidding me.

“Gonna have to do a little bit better than that.”

With a direct attack like this one, all he had to do was step aside. This ‘Robin’s’ momentum would force him to keep moving at this point -- nobody could stop themselves after hurtling forward like that, it was simple inertia. Something he himself had learned when he was in a very similar circumstance. Such dumb irony.

Therefore, stepping aside, the Knight allowed the ‘son of Batman’ to carry out his strike, raising an arm almost lazily to catch the toy sword’s blade in his grip.

“He’d never let you pull of something like that -- right? That’s what you’re thinking now, at least. But it’s ok -- it’s ok to know that you’re useless. He knows it, too.” Venomous words from a venomous mouth.

“You’re not better. You’re just another replacement.”

Damian had easily slipped into his new routine. He patrolled the city by night as his father would have instructed, and kept his identity a secret, yet the constant lull of weak men with poor reflexes and few challenges in between had left him restless and antsy. Careless at times; He’d snapped more bones than necessary lately.

He stood on a rooftop, overlooking some shady activity, when it approached. Damian turned to face him as he drew nearer, his priority shifting from investigation to possible defense. 

The voice grated his ears but he kept steady. Mother would have been proud, but what kind of question was that?! Damian steeled himself. Did it matter what answer he gave?

Damian stood proud and answered with utmost confidence. 

“I’m Robin.”

“SHUT UP!”

Immediately, rage. Unbridled, burning rage, made even worse by the horrible garbling of the Knight’s voice. Of course the kid was going to say something like that. Robin, Robin, Robin! That didn’t matter, that meant nothing, it was a husk, a crutch, a brace which stood only as a hollow monument to a worthless legacy.

Taking a deep breath, the Arkham Knight stood tall, and pointed directly between the boy’s eyes.

“Your name isn’t Robin. I want to know your real name. You’re so damn proud of being the bat’s assistant -- I get it, I really do. But that’s not who you are. Or is it that you don’t even know who you are, yourself -- other than Wayne’s towel boy, I mean.”

The amount of hatred in the voice, even modified, was almost palpable in the air. Robin, the Batman, the very name of Wayne itself -- he hated it all, more than anything in the world. And he’d stop at nothing to bring it down on its head.

Oh, this was a laugh. All dressed up, red and green and black, like a damned demented christmas tree. How’d he pick out the colors, anyway? Way back in the old days...it made the Knight sick to his stomach.

The fact that he wasn’t quite sure who this kid was made him even sicker, and filled him with a sense that he wasn’t going to like what came next. Even so, he approached the boy, his armor giving him a sense that he was hulking over the smaller figure. When he spoke, his garbled voice gave him the ominous presence of some sort of demon standing before a child.

“...What’s your name?”

The question was calculated -- serious. This wasn’t an icebreaker...it was life or death.

“Hey, you.”

The garbled voice came from behind the crowned figure, as the Arkham Knight had been tailing him for a good long while down these city streets, keeping as out of sight as he could. He couldn’t help it -- he needed all the information he could, and now that he’d caught him alone...

“That crown on your head -- you some sort of royalty? Local king or something?”

The hell...? The hell was this supposed to be?

Social experiment? Another world? Dragged here in order to be tested by some moronic scientists on a television screen?! Don’t make me laugh. The Arkham Knight strode down the street, his mask somehow an image of rage while still being an expressionless visor. None of his tech seemed to work, he couldn’t activate communications, but his armor still seemed to let him see, at the very least. He’d keep it on, for now.

He was going to get to the bottom of this, even if it meant getting his hands dirty. That’s why he stopped in front of the first person he saw in the street and pulled his gun out its holster, directing the barrel straight at his new acquaintance.

Strange. The weapon felt lighter in his hands than normal...if the person in front of him had seen his face, they may have seen the flicker of uncertainty which passed over it, but fortunately, it was still hidden beneath that all-concealing mask. That flicker vanished quickly, though -- he had to focus on the task at hand.

“Listen up, ‘cause I hate repeating myself. You’re gonna tell me how to get out of here. Now.” His voice was scrambled with some sort of filter, making him sound even more ominous.
