I made a photo and forgot. Anyway, this is read in 2025. Honorable mentions of 'Make Me A Monster' and 'Tales of the City'.
Well, also, I had a bunch of audiobooks and some digital books, and I mention only most liked ones.
Audiobooks:
1. "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy
2. "Invisible Monsters" by Chuck Palahniuk
3. "Xenos" by Dan Abnett
4. "The Mist" by Stephen King
Digital:
1. "The Hotel" by Daisy Johnson
2. "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Posting Tarn because he costs 45 euro and he will work off this money by amusing me.
I need ideas for poses.
One more of my old projects. Memory game!
I used alcohol markers, stamps, ink for stamps, glue, holographic paper and thick paper for watercolor paint.
My book is finally home. Not for long, there's another person who wants to read it (after she finish two other books I lent her).
I forgot to tell about a dream I had on Sunday.
First of all, do you ever dream of being a specific gender? I have that sometimes. One more dream where I'm still me, but a guy. I usually don't feel gender, but I know it exists purely because sometimes, in my dreams, I'm another person. Also, I was in the process of listening to the audiobook Blood Meridian, and there's a character called Judge Holden. And he's a total pizdec.
So, imagine you're in your room, playing records, flipping through some pretty looking books...
And there's this face in the corner.
He's your roommate, and you try to pretend he doesn't exist.
And when you miss your alarm, the part from the musical Perfect Town plays in your head for seven minutes, with the lyrics:
I just came from Denver,
I'm a sex offender,
this is the perfect toooown!
On repeat. Until you finally wake up.
Brain, why??
My friend read 'The Sluts' by Dennis Cooper.
We talked about if we really should lend this book to our other friend. I think we should make her read the synopsis.
J said she was hooked on that book, but she don't want to read more Dennis Cooper.
J had really a lot to way this morning. "The scariest part is that people like that exist." (She meant the ones with vile fantasies (like snuff, for example).)
Yes, D should read the plot summary first. I just have this ability to talk without spoilers, and probably I didn't warn her enough. I suddenly remembered that she said her mother might like book like that (I was more focused on the part where you should read through reviews and chats, trying to understand where is truth and where is lie (cause everyone in this book are lying assholes), than the fact that it's literally about gay prostitutes and disturbing).
I also talked with J about me finishing Blood Meridian (as an audiobook and in my language). I explained a bit about that, and she said that she knows now why I liked 'The Sluts'.
"I now know why you liked 'The Sluts', everyone are assholes in this book."
And I shared with her this funny story about Murderbot Diaries being my first experience of reading the plot with loveable characters.
That's not all, now a bit more about my queues.
I refresh queues every 10 days. Books from queues "want to start" and "recommendation of a queer bookstore worker" are finished during this time period, so now I have to put something else on those honorable places.
This
"Compound Fracture" is something I wanted to try for a while. And "Hawk Mountain" was recommended by queer bookstore worker who likes horror.
Also, these are the books I should finish before I can go to this store again. And I want to finish at least Hawk Mountain cause I can't just go to this store and meet this nice person again without reading his recommendation.
But I want to do until December cause J wants to go to this store with me (she doesn't want to go alone).
The books I lent:
'The Sluts' by Dennis Cooper.
Friend J should read it soon on her vacation and then give it to Friend D (she wants to read it too).
'The Haar' and 'This Is How You Lose the Time War'
Lent to D. I asked her to return me 'This Is How You Lose the Time War' at least at the end of the month/beginning of December. I must make a summary photo.
Books I gave to my mom (so she can practice English?)
Turned out she wanted to read Kotaro Isaka, and I had it. Also, I have her 'All Systems Red' by Martha Wells cause I think language here is not difficult. Well, it was my first book in English, so... I hope I'm right.
I made crepes again! Took some with me, some left in the kitchen.
To take a horizontal photo, I had to hold the phone in very unsecure position and press the shutter button with my nose.
I have a new system. I now have a system of several queues.
10 books, each have its own place.
Recommendation from mother: James Hadley Chase
Recommendation from 🐍: Ancillary Justice
Recommendation from 🐦: The Chronicles of Amber
Recommendation from queer bookstore worker: At Dark, I Become Loathsome
Book my coworker/friend lent me: Tales from the City
Book for my readalong: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
Books I really want to read: 'This Is How You Lose the Time War' (completed today) and 'Freaky Folklore'
Queer bookstore purchase: 'Concerning My Daughter' (yes, I have enough books specifically from queer bookstore that it's deserve its own queue)
Book I have to finish*: Remarkably Bright Creatures
* - because I already started it months ago
So, 8 queues.
And now, what happened this month (it's all related to books).
I accidentally found out another way to have a blind date with a book. I talked with the seller in a small bookstore. Last month when I bought "The Haar" by David Sodergren, he said "oh, it's so good". We talked, and I learned he likes horror genre. I like horror, too. I liked "The Haar" a lot. Which means our tastes might be similar. So I asked him to recommend me a horror book last Saturday. His first option was one I already have (and it made me more sure about his taste), so next he gave me the book I never heard about. And he quickly told the synopsis. He looked excited about this one (his eyes were so lively and bright when he talked about it, like he waited for the day he can talk about it), so I bought the book without checking its rating. It's "Hawk Mountain" by Conner Habib. And if I like this one, I'm curious what else he can recommend (I won't go to this store until I finish 3 books).
I also really inspired someone to read. Another colleague of mine (and now a friend) became interested in reading when she saw me reading 'Walking Practice'. She was so intrigued that she bought it and read it. Before that, she hadn't really read fiction. And this month she managed to read another book, and will soon start a second one. She's going to lend me 'Make Me a Monster', which she really liked. And I'll lend her 'The Haar' and 'This Is How You Lose the Time War'. Because books aren't cheap, and it's just that I'm a spendthrift who buys so actively (I have enough money for groceries and other important things, everything is ok). I suggested exchanging/lending books because it's cheaper this way. You can always buy it later if you want to add a book to your personal collection. And this way I can introduce her to my favorites without pushing her to spend money. Before talking about the library, we are in the Netherlands, and I'm more than sure that most of the books in the nearby libraries are in Dutch. I don't speak the language well enough to read books on it. I told her not to dog-earing my books cause it's important to me. And she said: Of course, it's good what you told me, I'll find some kind of paper then cause I usually dog-ear my books.
...
I'll give her some bookmarks. I have free bookmarks from Stumpel. They're with adds, but anything will do.
Wish me luck in book lending. Let's hope I don't make a mistake by trusting people with my things. I hope I will feel calm knowing my books are not home (I am very particular about things that are mine). But some part of me believes I'm doing the right thing by sharing.
I finished it today. I'm still processing it. However, the facts speak for themselves. The poetry of its style (not usually my thing) makes me think of my partners, and I couldn't put it down; I read it in a record-breaking four days.
I want to re-read it when my English becomes better.
A bit late again. What I finished, what I started, and what I currently reading.
Finished books:
I already talked about 'Walking Practice' and 'You Weren't Meant To Be Human' here.
So let's talk about 'The Haar'. I loved it. The atmosphere, the plot, the creature, the gore, Muriel. All of it. One of those rare moments I devoured more than half of the book in one sitting. The bookstore worker was right. Oh, it's so good.
Also, the cover is so pretty.
And now, unfinished books:
For the record, some of these books I simply left home while I had my trip to Ukraine.
Concerning My Daughter: I stopped at page 18 for now, but I'm sure I will catch up this month.
The Chronicles of Amber: I liked the plot. Can't wait to see what will happen to Corwin next. The book was too thick, so I could just take it with me. I'm currently on chapter 6 of 'Nine Princes in Amber'. This one my 🐦 likes.
Ancillary Justice: This one I took to my trip. I like Breq. I want to choke some lieutenants. Can't wait to read what will happen next. This one my 🐍 likes.
James Hadley Chase: This is a collection, 4 stories inside. I finished 'No Orchids for Miss Blandish' and started 'The Flesh of the Orchid'. My mother really wanted me to try this author. I liked it. It's very fast, there are a lot of twists and turns that you don't always predict, everything is connected. Also, a little bit about the place we bought it. It was a second-hand bookstore and is currently the only place where you can find books in Russian. Spoiler: we bought a lot of Chase on OLX, about 20+ books, quite cheap. All because my mom really wants me to read 'Lay Her Among The Lillies'.
Freaky Folklore: It reminds me of my favorite childhood books. I always had a lot of books about myths and mythical creatures. And monsters, too :). Now I have one in English. This book I'm going to read slower cause it's basically a collection of short stories. Information about a creature and a short story about it. Illustrations are good. Again, little story about it. I saw it in September. And I didn't buy it. But, as it always happens to me, my mind kept returning to this book. The girl who worked in this store was so nice. I couldn't remember the name, I only remembered the size, the cover, where I saw it last time (they changed it), and what it was about. And it is always so awkward to ask when you don't remember the name. She found it after I explained where I saw it last time. Turned out they changed it's postion because of spooky season (a lot of horror books were on tables instead of shelves). She was very nice and even showed me other books like that. We talked a bit.
Audiobooks:
Blood Meridian: Oh. My. Fucking. God. I haven't finished it yet. I listen to it in Russian translation. It's so not like what I'm used to read. And I mean writing style. Moeilijk. It's a challenge for my patience. I'm determined to finish.
Tea, our favorite Ukrainian tea
I showed my mother LuLuYam songs, and she liked them.
She's not very good at translating songs by ear, so I just briefly explained the topics covered.
Two comments:
"This is fucking awesome." (about the sound)
"Creativity is the best way to deal with this." (about the lyrics and its meaning)
Does anyone else not use Murderbot's full name after a while of being in the fandom?
I used to, but now I just use "Secunit" or "MB". It feels too personal to use it's name. Like...that's private. We're not close like that.
I called it Murderbot when I first started the first book (during the plot discussions as I read), but right after the scene where SecUnit said "it's private", I started calling it SecUnit.
In case anyone is having a bad night
