While appearances would say different with how they bicker at times, the two of them do end up holding a deep trust in one another—be that with personal matters or on the battlefield where necessary.

He won’t admit to it, but he does end up adjusting the food he cooks to appease Ymir’s pickiness at times. If anyone ever mentions anything, he’ll say that it’s so that he doesn’t have to hear her complain, but really he likes pleasing his friends with his food.

He’s really salty about her taking Eren’s surname when they join the Training Corps, and he feels jealous when he sees them growing closer. Yes, he knows she’s not a real threat to their relationship. Yes, he knows he’s not being logical. No, that won’t stop him.

When they return home, he’s genuinely worried that she will be forced to pass the Jaw Titan on to someone else. Through the few years they spent together on Paradis, he begins to care about her and would hate to see her gone so soon. He would even consider suggesting that she stays on Paradis, but he knows it would be a pointless, doomed future for her.

Eren’s influence encouraged Reiner to stand up for himself more as a child, kickstarting a willingness to fight his own battles, and to help Eren in return.

The pair of them are a terrible twosome and this continues when they’re older, too. No matter how much either of them might mellow out over time, the mischievous streak is still there in both of them. Whether it’s inside jokes at the expense of others or excessively loud and obnoxious sex to annoy Zeke, they’ve still got it.

They don’t talk about their feelings as much as they probably should, but there’s an unspoken understanding about most things; what they experienced on Paradis, memory-induced nightmares, or the looming dread that their shortened lifespan brings—both of them know how it feels, and they don’t need words to share that.

Eren is the single person Reiner trusts most in this world; he trusts him with his secret surrounding his heritage, and that’s as good as trusting him with his life, because that secret could cost him his life.
