Ever since I first met Julia Thummel on the first day of Drawing 1, her quirky and fun outfits have continued to impress me. Among the everyday fashion grind of leggings, hoodies, T-shirts, and sneakers, Julia’s distinctive vintage style stands out like a shining star. Julia is a pro at mixing patterns and textures, and isn’t afraid to have fun wearing fancy clothes everyday. I had the amazing opportunity to meet up with Julia and talk about her personal fashion. Continue reading to find out more about Julia.
Major/Minor: Communication Design/French
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Skokie (Chicago), IL
Favorite place to cozy up: East Asian library- it’s so beautiful and I love the ceilings! I like to go there to relax when I have time between classes. Back home in Chicago, this place called Caffeine Café is my go-to. They have super comfy armchairs, and the vibe is a really great place to relax and study.
Style Profile: Eva Blumenfeld
By: Emilia Weinberg
Walking across campus, it’s hard not to notice Eva Blumenfeld’s distinctive style. Eva, a freshman, can often be found in bold colors and interesting silhouettes. She’s even been featured as a model in previous Armour Blog posts. After months of admiring Eva’s effortless sense of fashion, I decided to ask her a few questions about it. Read more about Eva below:

1. How would you describe your style/how did it develop?
To be totally honest I do not give that much thought to what I wear. But when I do, I mostly turn to pieces that I enjoy wearing even if it is something I've had for a really long time. Also I think shopping at thrift stores has also influenced my style. I started doing this when I was in 9th grade because one of my older friends who I thought was cool did it. I like the idea of having of looking for a pattern or color that draws your eye instead of a particular brand or store. Although I now shop at stores that aren't necessarily always thrift shops, I still love looking for unique pieces.
2. Do you follow any trends? If so, which?
I don't necessarily know if I follow trends, I guess I may be subconsciously wearing things that are in style because they are what I see around me.
3. What’s something you would never wear?
Style Profile: Chandler Malone

While NBA players like Russell Westbrook, Lebron James, and Carmelo Anthony are role models on the basketball court, they are style trendsetters off the court. The NBA star Steve Nash started his own line of men’s suits and Lebron James produced the first ever NBA Fashion Show in February. You may catch Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder hitting a triple double in a game against the Indiana Pacers and then flying off to the front row of Milan Fashion Week, dressed in Rick Owens and sitting next to Anna Wintour. You may even spot Amar’e Stoudemire of the Suns rocking a hooded fur vest and a menorah necklace at New York Fashion Week.
It’s no secret NBA players are stylish, but fashion conscious players are not isolated to the NBA. Chandler Malone, a sophomore on the WashU basketball team speaks about his take on fashion and shows off his casual cool style.
Where are you from?
Dallas, Texas
What position do you play on Wash U’s basketball team?
Point guard
What is your major?
My major is American culture studies and I have a minor in marketing and business leadership.
Style Profile: Neena Wang
By: Grace Gilbert
Ever since meeting my WUSA, Neena Wang, I have always admired her unique style. Having been featured on the Armour Instagram multiple times, Neena is a pro at pairing standout pieces. For example, she can be found rocking a patterned jumpsuit with bold sunglasses and statement jewelry, and she even rocks a septum piercing with ease! I recently met up with Neena to talk about her personal style and spring fashion. Read more about Neena under the cut.
Major: International Area Studies
Minor: Art and Architecture
Grade: Sophomore
Hometown:Memphis, Tennessee
Extracurriculars: WUSA, involved with social justice and activism groups on campus doing Civic Scholars and studying abroad next year
Beyond the Superficial Exteriors: Fashion in Politics
By: Kimaya Hemdev
“Hillary, you won't make president looking like that” [The Guardian, 2012]
And she shouldn’t, if the basis for making president is not her ability as a politician, but rather, her clothing choice.
Fashion is a powerful mode of expression: one that politicians, dictators and popularly elected people have explored in the past, continue to do so today and will be doing tomorrow. Just because it is a mode of expression, does not mean it is the only mode. Just because it is a basis for judgment, it is neither a crucial nor a (includes many things) one. There is a fine line between judging a fashion designer on the basis of her wardrobe, and similarly judging a politician. Look at what really matters. In fashion, one’s political abilities do not matter even the slightest bit, but yet, why does fashion matter to such a great extent in politics?
Go Nude…
By: Paulina Gallagher
On an average school day, my beauty routine consists of globbing on moisturizer, half-heartedly rubbing concealer under my eyes, and applying chapstick as I am walking to class. When I’m feeling a bit more dedicated, mascara and lipgloss might be thrown into the mix. NUDESTIX has found a glamorous and beautifully simple solution to the woes of my beauty routine – and I’m obsessed!
Ally and Taylor Frankel, 15 and 17 respectively, are the masterminds behind the NUDESTIX brand. Their mother, a chemical engineer, noticed Ally and Taylor’s beauty routines and was inspired to collaborate with her daughters create a brand of makeup that can give customers an easy way to create a fresh-faced, nude look. I was able to meet Taylor and her mother at an event over spring break which got me hooked on their brand.
Chiara Ferragni

Looking for a blog to peruse while procrastinating during thisbusy time of the year? Check out http://www.theblondesalad.com. Twenty sevenyear old Italian Chiara Ferragni launched her fashion blog, The Blonde Salad, in 2009 as a forum for her views on lifestyle, travel, and style. Since then the site (named after her hair and “mixed salad of interests”) has slowly grown and today receives several hundred thousand visits per day.
Chiara’s meteoric success allows her to collaborate with several luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton, with whom she helped design a line of shoes. Browse around Nasty Gal or Chiara Ferragni Collection and you’ll be sure to spot her bold and quirky designs from her own private collection. On top of running her beloved blog and footwear line, Chiara is a model and spokesperson for Guess and has been referenced in fashion publications like Teen Vogue, New York Magazine, In Style, Marie Claire and vogue.com. Just this month was featured in the Harvard Business Review as the first blogger case study. Kanye West x Adidas Originals
By: Dana Berger
During New York Fashion Week, Kanye West debuted his apparel and footwear collection for Adidas titled “Yeezy: Season 1.” The Adidas logo has become a fast trend and Kanye’s collection is raising the status of the brand’s comeback into fashion. After some opening words from Kanye, the lights went on and the presentation began. The models, dressed in athletic-inspired sweatpants, sweatshirts, and vests over nude bodysuits and underwear, walked as a group in a slow procession down the runway set to long trumpet notes. The green and gray athletic-grunge apparel was not particularly unique, but it seems Kanye cared less about impressing his audience with innovative clothing design and more about presenting an attitude. The focus of the fashion show was on mood, dramatic atmosphere, and his much-anticipated 750 Yeezy Boost Sneaker. The Boost Sneaker is way above the typical Adidas price point at $350, but the shoe is already in high demand.
My Outlook on Normcore
By: Nate Young
Earlier in the month, mindlessly scrolling through Facebook to avoid whatever work I had, I stumbled upon what I thought was just another night at Harry’s. What the event turned out to be was far more interesting: a panel discussion that one of my good friends at Williams College was attending – “Clothes and Class.” The description explained how clothing easily communicates a message to those around you, and planned to explore the topic of what “dressing normally” meant, especially in a university setting. While the idea of “normcore” is nothing new for much of the millennial generation, I found that this idea of normality in terms of clothing was particularly well suited to the Wash U population.

Mirrored sunglasses are currently one of the most sought-after fashion trends. Photographed on countless celebrities and in numerous clothing stores, reflective shades are the perfect way to add a fun twist to your spring wardrobe. Although we are in polar temperatures right now, spring break is around the corner and there's no reason why you can't rock a pair of mirrored sunglasses to block out the sun while walking to class. Not only do they come in almost any kind of frame, from aviator to cat-eye, they are also made in countless fun tints, putting a new spin on classic styles. I love donning my pink reflector shades when my outfit feels drab. Here are five affordable options to add this trend to your wardrobe!
1. Pixie Market- Ride On Mirrored Sunglasses, $18 2. Quay Australia- The Goto, $45 3. ASOS- Jeepers Peepers Round Sunglasses, $33.02 4. CRAP Eyewear- The T.V. Eye, $58 5. Le Specs- The Hey Macarena, $59
Scarf It Up

If you are anything like me, you’re probably sick ofadorning layer on layer and the same jacket and same boots everyday. Just because it’s drab outside, doesn’t mean you can’t dress it up. Oomph up your winter outfit and make a style statement by throwing a scarf on. Scarves add a pop of color, and they are both fun and playful. You can change the way you wear it everyday.
Brand Spotlight: LES
By: Amanda Reiter
Leslie Paramonova’s collections always look like a fairytale storybook come to life in the form of fashion. The Moscow-based designer, whose new brand is titled LES, has thus far come out with 3 capsule collections, each whimsical and childlike in their own unique ways. I’ve been following her work for the past year or so now, and I find myself continuously enamored with her fantastical woodland laced with schoolgirl looks. Through the use of floral prints, tulle skirts, trapeze dresses, and toadstool speckled hats, she transports us into a magical, enchanted forest. For her most recent collection, Paramonova paired up with Taiwanese illustrator Hsiao Ron Cheng, to produce a lookbook full of hybrid animal creatures and coral reef formations to dress up in. Paramonova writes about her collections, stating “It is, in some way, nostalgia on an image of the Soviet school student, but changed and passed through a prism of modern perception.” Although, for some, her looks may be a bit too whimsical to wear, she truly is able to intertwine these themes to a tee. Right now, LES is looking to start expanding internationally, so, one day, we’ll be able to get a hold of her delightful forest frocks.

During this cold time of year, having a nice, stylish outer layer to easily throw on over whatever you choose to wear is the right way to go. Herewith, I present some choices for a successful – and hopefully easy – winter morning.

Blank Space Style

I’ll admit it: I like Taylor Swift. I’m certainly not a full-fledged Swiftie, but I won’t deny my inability to listen to “Shake it Off” or some of her older songs (“Tim McGraw,” anyone?) without singing along. However, regardless of whether you enjoy her music, there is no denying that the girl—sorry, woman—has great style. She has made a graceful transition from wide-eyed, up-and-coming country singer-songwriter to seasoned, fashionable pop mogul.
