"I also learned that Audrey Horne is missing. Audrey’s absence touches me in ways I could not predict. I find myself thinking not of clues or of evidence, but of the content of her smile"
Audrey by jessrobley
I’m watching Twin Peaks with a good longtime friend and her husband; we’re on the last few episodes of Season 1, and they seem to be having fun with it (but they’re taking things a little too literally and can’t seem to accept--at least not yet--the intentional absurdity/strangeness...wait till we hit S2, huh?)
Unfortunately (for me), they haven’t fallen in love with any of the characters so far, and actually teased me--in a good-natured way at least--when I said that Audrey was my favorite. They seem to see her as a troublemaker (I think one of them said “she creates chaos for no reason.”) My girlfriend is also clearly uncomfortable with Audrey and Cooper’s interactions so far, which is bumming me out a little since that’s one of my favorite elements of the show.
People’s favorites and ships are all a matter of taste, of course...but I’m still wondering if there’s not a way to nudge them into being more sympathetic towards Audrey...I guess if her early S2 arc doesn’t do it, nothing will.

Audrey & Cooper vs. Audrey & Wheeler [½]
John Justice Wheeler is introduced late in the second season of Twin Peaks to replace Agent Cooper in Audrey Horne’s narrative. He is, in theory, a more “appropriate” love interest for the eighteen-year-old heroine, but this idea quickly proves to be flawed. Wheeler is ostensibly similar to Cooper: he is the “tall, dark, and handsome stranger” of Audrey’s fantasy and, as the script tries to emphasize, admirable and upstanding. Yet as a good friend of her (till-then morally bankrupt) father and an established, successful businessman, Wheeler’s age must be closer to Cooper’s than to Audrey’s. In his first scene, Wheeler “flirts” with Audrey by describing an “unbelievably cute” photograph he has of her–at age ten! He tells Ben that he is falling in love with Audrey, but his real goal seems to be to seduce and have sex with her. (Sadly, the writers indulge this desire in Wheeler’s final episode.)
This stands in stark contrast to Cooper, who never denies his attraction to her, but tells Audrey that she needs a friend more than a lover. Audrey, in turn, clearly always trusts and admires Cooper, while she’s cold towards Wheeler and suspicious of him after they meet. The diifferences shown between these characters are more important than the similarities we are told they share. Cooper offers Audrey respect and emotional support, even at her most immature and vulnerable. Wheeler, however, asks more from her than she’s willing to give (“if you bring a hammer, you better bring nails”). At least as far as viewers can tell, he’s unconcerned with her age and unaware of her recent trauma. Within a few days, he meets Audrey, goes on one date with her, then takes her virginity inside his airplane before literally flying out of the show and leaving Audrey, once again, alone.

First of all, let me apologize for how inactive this blog has been for the last...well, almost two years (yikes!)--a lot of real-life stuff has gotten in the way, but mostly, the blame lies on the fact that I have not yet watched the new season. Real life problems slowed my rewatch to a crawl, and when I finally finished it up last spring, I got another friend (alas, only temporarily it seems) to start watching from the beginning with me, and I’m only now realizing she probably won’t continue doing so.
Also, being honest, I’m just scared I won’t like what I find when I finally get around to Season 3.
I’ll try to be a little more consistent with posting what I already have saved from before the S3 release, because I know you all ended up here out of love for Audrey!
That said, I went back through the archive and found that Audrey is way too “adult” for Tumblr’s new content rules.
