A comic (?) about my love of weird little bats for this halloween
North Americaâs ancient bald cypress forests have told scientists about historyâs legendary droughts and wet periods. Now theyâre warning us
So fucking depressing (hint: for anyone encountering a login wall, firefox will let you read the article by clicking on the page icon on your browser bar called the "Toggle Reader View" button).
Bald cypress are literally thousands of years old in certain places, but essentially climate change and pollution from humans, couple with the destruction of swamplands for much of American history, is finally killing off this incredibly resilient plant that could still teach us so much about how to adapt to our changing environment.
I just... I hate this so much. The reason the swamps and wetlands were targeted was so unnecessary, boiling down to "well, we can't easily use shit from there and it's gross and icky so go ahead and destroy it." Perfectly encapsulates the American perspective, imho.

I FUCKING KNEW THIS POST WAS A GOOD IDEA
manifesting tf out of this bc its my birthday month
The shelter where I volunteer got some new hissy babies and we were making progress with socialization yesterday.
Play video, sound on.
There was this old lady who lived across the street and cats would just appear at her house. Theyâd never really be seen again, and she had a cat of her own with a collar and all who never really left the house but would spend most of the day by the bay window. But the rest were just a revolving door of random cats. Which naturally meant kittens would pop up too.
So one time when I was doing my high school volunteer hours at this animal shelter, she showed up and said she had some kittens to drop off and some to pick up. I thought it was weird but I figured she fostered them and so I assumed she fostered cats and that explained the amount of random cats Iâd see at her place (turns out sheâd lure strays in for spaying/neutering and then take them to shelters around the area for socializing and ideally adoption).
So she dropped off three extremely socialized and friendly kittens that I guess she had picked up 2 days prior. And then grabbed a kennel thing with five feral-ass kittens one of the donors found near a dumpster.
I had seen them earlier but the day manager told me they had just gotten them the day before and they had not been socialized because they were waiting for âthe expertâ. And I guess that was this lady. So she puts on these thick black gloves and goes âSweetheart can you hold this for me? I gotta prep the babiesâ, and I held the kennel still while this woman just 100% no fear sticks her hand in there and grabs a kitten that is NOT happy about it. She then grabbed it by the head gently, wrapped a tea towel or some type of cloth thing around it, and then laid it down to do something that was like equal parts origami fold and burrito roll?? Idek. Point is the kitten was PISSED. But it couldnât move or anything because she wrapped it and secured the wrap with one of them big old timey baby pins. And she did it to the others as well. It didnât even take her 5 minutes lmaooo. Then she put them back in the kennel and went home.
I asked the manager about it and he said âOh yeah sheâll be here in 2 days to drop them off. She has a M E T H O D.â And just as he said she showed up two days later, with 5 perfectly friendly kittens in tow!
I didnât ask because I assumed she was a witch and also I didnât care, but I had mad respect for her đ
I wish to meet this woman and also to learn from her so that I can do this magic
So, funny story, my misbegotten passion project, the squid facts hotline, went viral once again, and, ha ha ha, we got a bill that made me want to barf a little (a lot, actually), so YOU'RE IN LUCK! I panic-called my friend Corey Danks, who absolutely rocks, and he designed a metal-as-hell squid facts hotline t-shirt. So good I was like "Wow. Yeah. That's what art is for." I was moved. Emotionally.
It. RULES.
I'm OBSESSED with it.
And I hope a bunch of you crop-top it. I really want to see this shirt crop topped. It can't be me, but maybe it can be you.
Here's the back, which also slaps.
Profits support the squid facts hotline.
Reblog this. For the Squid Facts.
And get a t-shirt here.

Every time I see companies selling """punk""" jewellery or clothing I become apoplectic with rage. Just saw a ÂŁ65 padlock necklace advertised to me bitch Fuck you go to your nearest weird little shop that sells everything in the world including fake Rolexes and bongs the size of a toddler. Buy a thing of chain and a padlock. Borrow some bolt cutters someone you know will probably own some and if not get some cheap ones or borrow from a local tool library. Slap em together. Maximum cost ÂŁ30 and that's MAXIMUM that's assuming you bought over a metre of expensive heavy chain AND bought the bolt cutters. You can do it for under a fiver with a wallet chain and pliers. I still wear a necklace I made when I was 15 out of a wallet chain and pliers and a padlock I got in a set of 3 from poundland. If the issue is dexterity or otherwise disability related then find a friend and swap a favour with them it'll still be cheaper than these scamming poser companies and will help you build community and share resources. Something which is actually punk. Fuckin. Capitalist posers
Important to keep in mind there's a distinction here between 'someone who paints and sells patches in their own small business' (cool, craftsmanship, usually very fairly priced for materials and labour while still affordable for punks who don't have that skillset to buy, honestly not a category far removed from 'if you buy me lunch I can paint your jacket' exchanges) and big companies who charge extortionate prices for something that's supposed to be counterculture, paying staff minimum wage and making huge profits the workers will never see a penny of (cunts)
I keep having to tear down extremely predatory/misleading Scien.tology flyers in my school's art building. This is the third fucking time I've ripped the fuckers up and I'm getting Real Fucking Tired of it.
If you see shit like this DO NOT call the number, do not do anything to interact with these fucking people. Take down the posters if you're able to. They do NOT want to help you. They are a literal fucking cult who openly despise psychology and any actual proven mental health science, and are actively trying to trick mentally/emotionally vulnerable people into joining.
The red flags here are "Hubbard," the name of their founder, and "dianetics," the crackpot theory they teach for "auditing" your sins from your past lives.
Iâd like to add what @jaspertheshark said in the tags because I feel itâs important
youre doing gods work. continue ripping them down!
scientology is a cult. it is deadly. it destroys lives. stay as far away from it as you can.
So Iâve been enjoying the Disney vs. DeSantis memes as much as anyone, but like. I do feel like a lot of people who had normal childhoods are missing some context to all this.
I was raised in the Bible Belt in a fairly fundie environment. My parents were reasonably cool about some things, compared to the rest of my family, but they certainly had their issues. But they did let me watch Disney movies, which turned out to be a point of major contention between them and my other relatives.
See, I think some people think this weird fight between Disney and fundies is new. It is very not new. I know that Disneyâs attempts at inclusion in their media have been the source of a lot of mockery, but what a lot of people donât understand is that as far as actual company policy goes, Disney has actually been an industry leader for queer rights. Theyâve had policies assuring equal healthcare and partner benefits for queer employees since the early 90s.
Iâm not sure how many people reading this right now remember the early 90s, but that was very much not industry standard. It was a big deal when Disney announced that non-married queer partners would be getting the same benefits as the married heterosexual ones.
Like â it went further than just saying that any unmarried partners would be eligible for spousal benefits. It straight-up said that non-same-sex partners would still need to be married to receive spousal benefits, but because same-sex partners couldnât do that, proof that they lived together as an established couple would be enough.
In other words, it put long-term same-sex partners on a higher level than opposite-sex partners who just werenât married yet. It put them on the exact same level as heterosexual married partners.
They werenât the first company ever to do this, but they were super early. And they were certainly the first mainstream âfamily-friendlyâ company to do it.
Conservatives lost their damn minds.
Protests, boycotts, sermons, the whole nine yards. I canât tell you how many books about the evils of Disney my grandmother tried to get my parents to read when I was a kid.
When we later moved to Florida, I realized just how many queer people work at Disney â because historically speaking, itâs been a company that has guaranteed them safety, non-discrimination, and equal rights. Thatâs when I became aware of their unofficial âGay Daysâ and how Christians would show up from all over the country to protest them every year. Apparently my grandmother had been upset about these days for years, but my parents had just kind of ignored her.
Out of curiosity, I ended up reading one of the books my grandmother kept leaving at our house. And friends â itâs amazing how similar that (terrible, poorly written) rhetoric was to what people are saying these days. Disney hires gay pedophiles who want to abuse your children. Disney is trying to normalize Satanism in our beautiful, Christian America.Â
Just tons of conspiracy theories in there that ranged from âa few bad things happened that werenât actually Disneyâs fault, but they did happenâ to âPocahontas is an evil movie, not because it distorts history and misrepresents indigenous life, but because it might teach children respect for nature. Which, as we all know, would cause them all to become Wiccans who believe in climate change.â
Like â please, take it from someone who knows. This weird fight between fundies and Disney is not new. This is not Disneyâs first (gay) rodeo. These people have always believed that Disney is full of evil gays who are trying to groom and sexually abuse children.
The main difference now is that these beliefs are becoming mainstream. Itâs not just conservative pastors who are talking about this. Itâs not just church groups showing up to boycott Gay Day. Disney is starting to (reluctantly) say the quiet part out loud, and so are the Republicans. Disney is publicly supporting queer rights and announcing company-supported queer events and the Republican Party is publicly calling them pedophiles and enacting politically driven revenge.
This is important, because while this fight has always been important in the history of queer rights, it is now being magnified. The precedent that a fight like this could set is staggering. For better or for worse, we live in a corporation-driven country. I donât like it any more than you do, and Iâm not about to defend most of Disneyâs business practices. But we do live in a nation where rights are largely tied to corporate approval, and the fact that we might be entering an age where even the most powerful corporations in the country are being banned from speaking out in favor of rights for marginalized people⊠thatâs genuinely scary.
Like⊠Iâll just ask you this. Where do you think weâd be now, in 2023, if Disney had been prevented from promising its employees equal benefits in 1994? That was almost thirty years ago, and look how far things have come. When I looked up news articles for this post from that era, even then journalists, activists, and fundie church leaders were all talking about how a company of Disneyâs prominence throwing their weight behind this movement could lead to the normalization of equal protections in this country.
The idea of it scared and thrilled people in equal parts even then. It still scares and thrills them now.
I keep seeing people say âI need them both to lose!â and I get it, I do. Disney has for sure done a lot of shit over the years. But I am begging you as a queer exvangelical to understand that no. You need Disney to win. You need Disney to wipe the fucking floor with these people.
Right now, this isnât just a fight between a giant corporation and Ron DeSantis. This is a fight about the right of corporations to support marginalized groups. Itâs a fight that ensures that companies like Disney still can offer benefits that a discriminatory government does not provide. It ensures that businesses much smaller than Disney can support activism.
Hell, it ensures that you can support activism.
The fight between weird Christian conspiracy theorists and Disney is not new, because the fight to prevent any tiny victory for marginalized groups is not new. The fight against the normalization of othered groups is not new.
Thatâs what theyâre most afraid of. That each incremental victory will start to make marginalized groups feel safer, that each incremental victory will start to turn the tide of public opinion, that each incremental victory will eventually lead to sweeping law reform.
Theyâre afraid that they wonât be able to legally discriminate against us anymore.
So guys! Please. This fight, while hilarious, is also so fucking important. I am begging you to understand how old this fight is. These people always play the long game. They did it with Roe and theyâre doing it with Disney.
We have! To keep! Pushing back!
I'm starting to find evidence on twitter of antis encouraging each other to shun friends and family for not being one of them and I am deeply concerned. This is some cult shit.
"should I shun my friend for being proship even though they're my only irl friend?"
"Should I shun my mother for being proship?"
The answer to both of these is GET HELP. You are being brainwashed into thinking that your friends and family are dangerous when you know that they wouldn't hurt anyone. See a therapist, take some time off the internet, reevaluate your situation. Fiction does not take precedence over your loved ones.
I'm tagging this with "antis please interact" because I think they need to see this too, and hopefully it helps someone. Your loved ones are not dangerous because of their taste in fiction.
It's really disturbing how we are watching a really unhealthy, purity obsessed minority become way, way too vocal. Are they becoming a majority among young fans, or are they just drowning out the other opinions?
Do these CHILDREN realize they are parroting the conservative "think of the children" dog whistle? Do they not realize that the same irrational fear of fiction negatively affecting reality is the same logic these book banning bigoted assholes are using to justify pulling books with LGBTQ characters? Because they are scared their straight child will become gay from reading a book! Because we all know THAT'S how that works, right?!
If reading books with queer characters doesn't make you gay, why the fuck would reading a fanfic with an underage character make you a pedophile? Did watching Game of Thrones make everyone suddenly cool with incest? No! Nothing changed!
Maybe these kids are confusing the concept of Representation Matters, where telling minority focused stories can be beneficial for that minority. Except they can't tell the difference between Watsonian and Doylelist analysis of a story. They can't differentiate between what the author is saying, what the setting is saying, and what a character is saying. So they think any mention of these "bad" things is bad because clearly it is condoning the behavior! Because video games DEFINITELY made me think murder is okay in real life, so I will definitely start grooming children because I read a teacher/student high school AU!
ITS' THE SAME FAULTY LOGIC!!
sexual assault triggers. i was sa'ed on Saturday night and it's really fucked me up emotionally. im safe and sound now and im trying to take it easy for the time being but I'm really afraid to be alone / walk to places again. i was wondering if someone could help me out with rides and food during my emotional recovery process but especially over the next few weeks.

Thinking about how every major city (except fort worth) in Texas is blue, votes democrat in every election, is majority liberal/left-leaning. It's driving me insane okay. The majority of Texans live in or around the major cities. Land does not vote.
75% of Texans live in BLUE!!!
This makes me want to put a toaster in the bath tub okay bye!!!
You guys don't get it, like if you're not from Texas you don't get it. Most people here seem to just wanna keep their guns and like not have to pay high taxes, but thats were their ""conservative "" views end. Texas is a minoriry-majority state. Dallas and Austin have some of the biggest LGBT populations in the US. To even call Texas a red state is CRAZY TO ME. ITS GERRYMANDERING!
People really need to remeber that most red states are only red bcs of voter suppression. Time and time again looking into the actual political leanings of populations has proven that if every single American adult voted the republicans would never win another election anywhere and that's without getting rid of gerrymandering and the electoral college. This is why they're obsessed with making sure it's as hard as possible to vote, it's the only way they can stay in power and they know it. They've known it since the goddamn Civil War, fuck since the dawn of this country. It's always been about making sure the "right" people are in power by only letting the citizens who will vote for them have the ability to do do so.
And, incidentally, this is why Arizona has gone blue. Despite being a historically red state we have laws to protect people's right to vote and make it as easy as possible, and it's telling as fuck that the second the tide began to turn in 2020 the republicans here immediately started trying to implement voter ID laws and ban mail in votes. They KNOW they will lose if they let everyone vote and so they rig the game as much as possible.
This is part of why you shouldn't write off places like Texas and Florida and other red states bcs they keep voting red. The majority of their populations are NOT republicans and the only reason republican candidates keep winning is because they have suppressed voters at every step of the process, going so far as to throw out hundreds of thousands of votes in some areas in Texas on a bs technicality that would have likely meant Beto O'Rourke's victory over Greg Abbot.
It's fucking rigged. That's why they keep winning. So stop writing off these states as lost causes just because of their elections, damn near EVERY American state has a population whos majority leans left, they just continue to have their rights stripped away by corrupt leaders who know the only way to win is to cheat.
