Story time. Yesterday would have been my parent's 49th wedding anniversary, had my father been around to celebrate it. When I was 19 my father pushed Jerry and I to marry sooner rather than later. I wanted a Valentine's Day wedding in 1994, but my father said he loathed the idea of his oldest daughter living in sin, so he said marry now and plan the big wedding later. The day he said that was his and mom's anniversary. I didn't want the day after, because it was Mama's birthday. So we chose to go the next day, which was July 28. Now about Mama. Never Lola. Always Mama to us grandkids, Mama Feling to everyone else. She was my mom's mom. Pastora Corazon Mendoza Icasiano, who was born this day in 1907. She would be 112 today, had she lived. She passed in December 1972 at the age of 65, 9.5 months before I was born. I'm 💯 sure I was the consolation baby because I was born exactly 9 months to the day of the funeral. 🤔 From everything I've heard among my older maternal cousins and family (I was the youngest until my baby sister came along), Mama was wonderful. I like to think that she lived on in all of us, through our arts & crafts, sewing, our love of cooking and sharing, and our penchant for altruism, because Mama was just that kind of person. And I like to say she inspired this line in the song Surrender by Cheap Trick. 🎶 Father says, "Your Mother's right, she's really up in things. Before we married, Mommy served in the WACs in the Philippines. Now I have heard the WACs recruited old maids for the war. But Mommy isn't one of those, I've known her all these years." 🎶 Also, my older brother Richard was her favourite grandchild, among the many. She loved them all equally, but Richard was her special baby because he was Mom's. Mom often muses that I'm her reincarnation sent back to stay with her and help take care of her as she grows older. She says sometimes I exhibit little quirks that remind her of Mama. Dad often said the same. I take it as a high compliment. I realize I do take after Mama in arts, crafts, sewing, volunteering, cooking for crowds, etc. At least I know where my need to create must come from in the gene pool. HBD Mama 😘😍❤️ https://www.instagram.com/p/B0bkBsVnDDs/?igshid=j1q6vkadpl1s
