Have not seen it, and I'm not particularly eager based on the synopsis. Is it any good?

I tried watching it today since it won the Oscar for best picture and La Palme d'Or (what a joke) but I gave up after 20 minutes... The movie starts with slow motion shots of naked women humping men, you know the type; you're in a club, blue light, the women are wearing thongs and high heels and humping ugly ass men with a big smile on their faces... to the rhythm of an incredibly upbeat boyband song... and it says it all really. I almost shut down the video right here and there. But I decided to give it a chance. During those 20 minutes I have been subjected to so many close ups of women's asses that i felt nauseous. It's a romantic comedy about a prostitute and her john (a 21 years old scrawny misogynist.) She somehow falls in love with the little shithead. You know, nothing charms a woman's heart more than being treated as a sex object. He's rich and Russian, he's white, so white you can almost see through him and soooo boring. He has the most annoying laugh and watches sexist music videos on his TV. Apparently, him paying to bypass women's consent is not a turn off. It's Pretty Woman but worse. It's the glamorisation of prostitution leading to wealth and fun parties with VIPs. It's trash. How many women are on the judging panels of those award shows? Not a lot I suspect. Some people also complained that it's Russian propaganda. I'm afraid I didn't watch enough of the movie to comment on that.

I wish I gave up after 20 minutes too but I wanted to finish it to have arguments for my channel discussion.

It tries to subvert expectations pretending to be romantic comedy at first. That’s why the 1st act is like that, it’s all sex (well I mean rape, but let’s be honest most people won’t see it like that), parties, romantic trip to Vegas, more parties and more sex. Then everything ends when the guy’s parents find out.

As a feminist I’m angry at this movie for three reasons:

1. It shows ‘sex-workers’ as independent entrepreneurs who choose when they work and when they don’t, to what men they sell themselves and to which they don’t, it shows that they are the ones who hold the power in this line of work. Which as we know is the glamorous front and nothing more than pimp propaganda.

2. It introduces to us the most novel idea of all time: that not all men are like that. The Russian thug who doesn’t let Ani leave the house, who restrains her by force and ties her up (!!!) while she’s fighting for her life, this thug appears to be a softie and is the only one who sees her as a human being! He’s not a rapist! He’s a good guy! He’s comforting her in the end! Apparently, there was an epilogue written where they are shown in a relationship or something.

3. It’s supposed to be a comedy. I knew every point where they wanted me to laugh and I guess if the audience is okay with rape, coercion and objectification of women and not sitting in abject horror after first 30 minutes of Act 1, it would be a funny movie.

Just say you have no media literacy and move on. Anora is not a movie that glamorizes sex work. It is not about Anora being a girlboss or standing up to anyone. Nor is it romantic either. It’s a film about the class divide and how she was easily bought, played with and discarded, and she can try to be defiant all she wants but it’s gonna do fuck all. It’s a criticism of the Russian “golden youth” (google it) and the oligarchy that gave birth to it. The connection explored between Igor and Anora is a representation of the utilitarian attitude that the people with money and resources have towards people they view as lesser than them - that is what brings them together and has nothing to do with romance, there is a reason that alleged epilogue is not in the film. It is a dark comedy yes, as it ridicules the outlandish behavior of the ultra rich elite who don’t even have the desire to raise their children properly and instead entrust their wellbeing to a bunch of goons. This isn’t a story that isn’t often told in American media so why would you know about it? But it’s a story very familiar to a Russian audience.
