I just can’t get out of my head the fact that julien said if teor dies, it is a soldier’s death, and if thimble dies trying to save him, it’s an example of why the falconer’s rebellion failed

because I think julien is always trying to make the tactical choice. when he’s trying to get occtis to leave, he’s not giving emotional reassurance; he’s telling him the tactical reasons behind why they need to get out when they can. he’s not just being heartless or callous, he’s trying to make the best strategic call. he’ll put himself at risk, but not when it jeopardizes the task at hand.

and why is that? well, as we saw in the flashback, raimond taught him how to do whatever necessary to achieve victory, whether people liked it or not. ‘you will be a booed and living man.’ I think julien has internalized that lesson to an almost damaging degree, and he’s divorced himself enough from any emotion but anger that he can’t really fathom making a choice based solely on feelings. especially not when those feelings put the strategic play in jeopardy.

but at the same time, he so frequently FAILS to make the tactical choice he knows he should. he tries to deny being driven by emotion, because in his mind, that’s why the rebellion failed: acting on emotion, not strategy. but he keeps going back for people. he keeps putting himself in harm’s way when he could run and accomplish his own objectives. he keeps sticking to occtis and the others and he can’t explain why, so he tries to couch it in tactical terms and deny caring.

thimble and julien I will always be obsessed with your dynamic. We’re 31 episodes in, only like 9 of those feature them at the same table but oh my god. like the fact that they both clearly don’t really like each other but are so deeply similar. They’re both lethal and sarcastic and vengeful and very shallowly beneath all that they’re so hurt and so lost in the world left in the wake of some of the worst things that could’ve happened to both of them. And the fact of that both of them share the loss of and desire to save the Golden Orchard. Like sure you hate each other but when you imagine your childhood you run through the same gardens. 

And the part that makes me the most buckwild is probably that they’ve also been uncommonly kind to one another at points. Like Julien spitting on the body of her best friend, grabbing her wings, and then also telling her that Twig’s okay. And Thimble shitting on julien every chance she gets, reminding him he isn’t her better and is a piece of shit, and then bringing him his father’s blade. Also thimble thanking julien and him yelling FUCK like it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to him. Oh seekers table v2 I’m so excited to see how their dynamic evolves more.

Something i feel The Legend of Vox Machina does better than the stream is how frustrated the gods seem to be by the Divine Gate.

In the stream ? Gods are cryptic, sending vision and obscur helps from on high, like some cold uncaring things.

In the show ? The Matron gets cut off mid-vision, sends help to Vax without ever having the time or space to actually explains what her gifts do, the Everlight can't reach Pike in Thar Amphala or through her grief but immediatly gives her back her healing when she needs it...

There's a helplessness to the gods depiction in the show that is just so good - they want to help so badly, but can't establish a conexion strong enough to deliver more than two sentence and like a handful of holy fire to a mortal. It's delightful, truly.

The truly impressive thing about House Tachonis is somehow they're always more fucked up than you think. I'll be like, oh, abusive father, creepy necromancers, sadism, vivisection, I gotchya, I know the tropes. And then its like, oh no, daddy only hates *some* of his kids cause he's not a monster. The creepy twins aren't just cruel and codependent, they're explicitly turned on by sibling-on-sibling violence and plain old Alabama-style sibling-on-sibling. They don't simply construct undead hulk abominations from their enemies, they also leave said abominations lying around their house for people to accidentally stumble upon. Not only will they kill misbehaving family members, they have a hole in the family crypt specifically dedicated to storing the resultant corpse bits. The underworld is attached to the basement of their *checks notes* summer home, with doors in the crypts and ALSO THE FUCKING KITCHEN?!? WHAT IN CASE THEY NEED A QUICK BITE WHILE SUMMONING THEIR UNDEAD HORDES? EXCEPT WE LEARN THEY SUMMON THEIR HORDES IN A RANDOM FUCKING ROOM TWO DOORS DOWN FROM THE GUEST BATHROOM APPARENTLY. SO WHY ARE YOU DOING IT LIKE THIS PRIMUS? WHY?!

They're also broke as fuck.

So to review:

*Primus' planned attack on the Palazzo Davinos fails to kill Aranessa Royce or Sir Julien.

*Plan to ritually sacrifice Occtis to create the Deva Vinidicta doesn't work for a whole host of self-inflicted reasons.

*Due to the above, Primus gets called a fool by his dead father.

*Despite the claims that House Royce is 'withered' the attack on the Golden Orchard results in Tachonis forces being slaughtered and the only reason it wasn't a total loss is because Aranessa wasn't there to keep the Orchard's magic stable.

*During said attack, Primus' eldest son gets cursed to do the Hokey Pokey for the rest of his life.

*The attempt to cover up the Palazzo massacre is so bad that everyone who thinks for more than 2 seconds figures out something is up and an official investigation gets launched.

*Primus' 2nd/3rd eldest son (whose name is Frons) decides to put on armor he doesn't know how to fight in and gets himself thrown off a bridge by the man Primus failed to kill.

*Petra and Ryah are attracted to Wicander because he was mean to his sister.

*Petra and Ryah have killed their previous fiancees because they want to be in a throuple. This has happened often enough that they were stripped of being their father's heir.

*Otto Einfasen insults House Tachonis' entire aesthetic in front of the heads of the other Sundered Houses and servants.

*After being put through the 3rd degree by House Einfasen, Primus whines to Yanessa that the entire family is broke and can't afford to bribe the other Houses to forgive them.

All of this happened in less than a month.

I think this has been said to death already but goddamn Aabria is so locked in on the thematic resonance of this campaign it’s crazy, any time Brennan touches on something Thaisha is connected to, Aabria picks it up immediately and spins it into something beautiful,,, her druid magic and calling, the Circle of Ancients, the Lloy family, the Pariah Blades, the treatment of the orcs and their liberation, Thaisha’s feelings about the Shapers and the War,,, she uses it all to cut so incisively to the emotional core of these big themes

It’s such good character creation because Thaisha isn’t just connected to the history of Araman, its personal to her it’s all so personal to her,, Aabria hasn’t just written an interesting factual history, she’s seen some of the questions and conflicts at the core of this worldstate and made a character who has deeply held beliefs and strong emotions in answer to those questions and it lets her make character choices that both make sense for Thaisha as an individual and connect to the themes of the campaign at the same time and it’s so good it’s just so good Aabria Iyengar you’re very good at this we should be telling you this every day

i’m feeling not just vindicated but incredibly moved that we were right that Thjazi did have good intentions the entire time, he was doing the right thing, he was trying to help fix the problems with the world and with a little help from the people he cared about it worked, his plan worked

it’s so easy to be cynical and tell the story of a revolution that eats itself or a heroic character who is corrupted by power or a rebel who becomes the thing he once fought against but that wasn’t Thjazi and more importantly that isn’t this story

this is a story of hope, the world is dark and dangerous and there are powerful people doing terrible things and the story of oppression is long and painful but you can do something, you can say no, you can fight against a more powerful opponent with more resources than you and if you are smart and careful and if you stand up for what is right and true and good even when it is difficult then you can still beat them and you can win, you can tell the story of freedom and manifest it in the world, you can fix what is broken, and you truly cannot tell me there’s not allegory in this because there is and it goes both ways
