‘I know he’s small and cute right now,’ the Major told his nephew as they stood over the crib. ‘But this baby will grow up to inherit leadership of the biggest criminal network in Ireland. You must put aside any budding affection, any ideas of morality, and any hope of change.’
Domovoi nodded. His uncle had played the role of bodyguard to this infant’s father for well over two decades, and knew the game well. The words of his trainer, Madame Ko, echoed in his ears: Never get emotionally attached to the principle.
The baby let out a small whimper in his sleep. Domovoi felt an unfamiliar sensation in his chest, something closely resembling how his younger sister could make him feel in her softer moments. But more protective, fiercer. Juliet could already take down her Taekwondo instructor; this little black-haired mite couldn’t currently take on a fly. Domovoi coughed to cover his momentary confusion, and tried to harden his heart. He was a bodyguard, a protector. Love had no place in this job. He nodded at his uncle again. ‘Yes, sir.’
Later that night, Domovoi was patrolling Fowl Manor and the grounds. The entire property was protected by high walls, dogs, a state-of-the-art security system, and the Major, but Dom was keen to begin the full scope of his duties. As he passed Artemis Fowl Senior’s study, he heard voices. Ever the professional, he did not eavesdrop or even pause, but the voices were making no attempt to be quiet. It was Mr Fowl and the Major.
‘I gave him the talk, sir,’ the Major was saying.
‘Do you think it’ll work?’ Artemis Senior asked.
‘Probably not. It didn’t for us.’
Domovoi grinned, and walked on.
