Queen Amidala, or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the sale
I haven’t really updated anything here for a while, but here you go.
The weekend after Christmas, my family and I made a trip to New York. While there, I went to the Star Wars Costume Exhibit. As expected, it mostly consisted of the beautiful costumes worn by Padme in the prequels. One costume in particular stuck out to me: her Red Invasion Gown, as some have deemed it.
I’ve always had a special interest in this costume. Since I am but a wee lass, the very first images of Star Wars that I’d seen as a child were associated with the prequels. The Red Invasion Gown was always the most prominent image for me; I didn’t know who was wearing it, what she did, or what the movies were really about, but I knew that the costume looked cool (even if I thought the makeup was a bit silly).

Anywho, fast forward about a decade -- I am now pretty well-versed in all that is Star Wars and its prequels. I’ve come to love the prequels for their costumes (one of the only few things good about them), and my cosplayer mind began to entertain the idea of recreating one. But I knew that it would probably never happen, seeing how I have neither the patience nor talent nor budget to ever do so. So I was content with just ogling them.
After heading into my local Hancock Fabrics two days ago with the intent of getting material for a completely different project, I came across something that I never thought I’d see.
Now, I must point out that I do all of my cosplays on a pretty tight budget, since I am, alas, but a poor young student. So, I always make use of coupons and love a good sale (except when it interferes with the use of coupons. Damn fine print...). This usually limits the materials that I can use, for example I’ll substitue velvet for faux suede if it can give a (somewhat) similar effect. Basically, if something is over 9.99 a yard, I stay away from it.
Which is why I couldn’t believe when I came across velveteen on sale. The velveteen usually ran for $15.99 a yard, but it was on sale for 60 PERCENT OFF, making it about $6.40 a yard instead. They only had about three colors available: dark green, burgundy, and bright red. I gravitated towards the bright red, knowing in my heart of hearts what needed to be done. I’d entered the store with no intention of making such a big commitment, but a sale like this is something that I had to take advantage of.
I got six yards of the bright red velveteen that, with coupons, ended up costing $32.50, which meant I saved almost twice what I paid.
So now I guess I’m making Queen Amidala’s Red Invasion Gown. God help me.
