“What are you, my mother? Magic words? Come on, man. Criminals don’t have to say please and thank you.”
“Good manners never hurt anyone. But all I’ve got is meat lover’s. I hope you’re okay with that.”
“Why don’t I have pizza right now?”
“Maybe because you haven’t said the magic words.”
He was seated at his usual spot – or what John had adopted as such when working – by the picture windows overlooking the city, drinking Scotch, because of all his habits, he hadn’t gotten rid of that one. He looked up.
❝Do you need anything?❞
“I need you to relax once in awhile,” Athena teased, taking a seat without waiting for an invitation. She crossed one leg over another and sat back. “When was the last time you just had a drink with a friend? If it was more than a day ago, it’s really time for another.”
A quick dismissal was all it took before Casey made her way out of the Hollow away from the guy who seemed to think all the girls were call girls. Her shift was done for the night, and she didn’t want to be there any longer. She bit her lip and leaned against the wall of The Fairy, closing her eyes and trying to collect herself.
“You okay?” Athena asked as she walked towards the Fairy. “Are they being extra handsy tonight?” She’d thought about grabbing a drink but if the patrons were being rude, she’d have to rethink that. At least there was always the Black Sheep.
→ BEFORE
Athena had hailed from London’s elite, an old money family whose fortune had gone back for nearly centuries. The bubbly and eccentric young woman attended London’s most prestigious schools, owned yachts and rode horses, attended elegant parties every night of the week if she had the liking for it (and she always did). Ironically, the girl with everything always wanted more. She would steal jewelry from bedrooms at parties, priceless trinkets from the homes of her fathers friends, even one nabbing a Degas sketch while at a museum gala. Athena would study art history at university during the week, coming to Neverland on weekends to partake in the excitement and nightlife, fencing her stolen good under the table to black market art dealers. Despite the rush it always gave her, Athena knew that her compulsive stealing was a problem. She was never so much as a thief as a kleptomaniac. Unlike other thieves in Neverland, Athena never stole to survive, she stole for fun.
→ AFTER
Athena continued to live her life as she liked, attending fabulous parties and stealing from the high society with continuously rising stakes. The thrill of the steal grew each time, as did how much she was bringing in after fencing the stolen property. There were a couple of close calls, managing to slip away from security just barely on several occasion, but Athena’s luck seemed to be endless. However, she wasn’t entirely selfish, sometimes giving money over to citizens of Neverland that she deemed worthy. Those people were few and far between though and soon Athena was growing bored of London. She left on her own for a few months to travel Europe, looking for something more out of life. Athena wasn’t surprised when she came back to Neverland to find that she missed a large gang war, but instead of remaining neutral she turned to her loyalties to her old school friend, John Darling to see if he needed any help.

“I keep in the shadows.” Effie responded. Then, she scrunched up her nose and laughed softly, shaking her head. “Wow, that sounded super creepy. I just mean– Um, I just don’t know many places to go. It’s lovely to meet you now, though.”
“The shadows, huh?” Athena watched her and nodded. “I understand. Sometimes it’s the best way to survive in a new place. At least until you figure out how to on your own.” She smiled. “It is. And if you ever need anything, you find me, alright?”
“Oh. Well, thanks,” Tobias grunted, not sure what else to say. To say that he was awkward would be an understatement, and he wasn’t so used to people calling him hot. He arched an eyebrow as she flipped her hair, pondering whether he was supposed to say something about it or not. Picking up on social cues wasn’t something he was best at.
She laughed again, not skipping a beat. “So, do you always offer to beat people up or was that just a one time thing?” she asked conversationally, taking the drink when it was handed to her. Athena took a drink and set the glass down. “Not that I need anyone beaten up right now. Just... curious.”
“I don’t know if that says more about the service here or about you.”
Athena slowly looked up, her eyes landing on the other girl. “I’m wearing three thousand dollar shoes, I’m not about to walk anywhere. I can wait for a damn car.”
“Is anybody here or is my car expected to fix itself up?”
“Sweetheart, you’re going to be waiting awhile. I’ve been here since this morning.”
“Yeah, you wanna give me a hand?”
Athena arched an eyebrow at him. “That is an interesting question you pose. Do I want to help?” She smiled at him before reaching down and yanking him to his feet. “You always end up on the ground like this?”
“I don’t doubt it,” Tobias gave a low chuckle under his breath before finishing off his drink. From the few experiences he had with the blonde, there was no doubt in his mind that she commanded attention when she required it. “Is the payback for talking someone’s ear off a pint now?” he asked with an eyebrow quirked in curiosity, hardly used to taking anything from anyone, even something as simple as a drink.
“Nah, the pint’s because you’re hot,” she said with a smirk, waving down the bartender and laughing. Athena tossed her hair over her shoulder and ordered another round before relaxing on her seat again.
“Oh, at the Black Sheep. Mr. Davis has been housing me; he’s very kind…”
“Yes, he is. At least you’re in good hands.” A neutral place, she thought to her self. “I’m surprised we haven’t run into each other before.”
“Well, thank you. I’m alright. Don’t mind me.”
“Are you sure you don’t need some help, hon?”
“No worries. I don’t have that little faith in you, A.” Maggie smiled. She would have nudged the girl on the hip but there was something so regal about Athena, she felt like it would be a gesture the blonde wouldn’t recieve well. “Now, what do you have in mind?”
Athena laughed again, tapping Maggie’s chin lightly with the tips of her long fingers. She wasn’t an affectionate person, but she did have people she cared about. “Something relaxing. I know a couple of late night spas and twenty-four seven restaurants with greasy food we can hate ourselves for eating.”
Effie paused as she tried to think. How long had it been since the men she’d been hitchhiking with left her here, with no money and a dead cellphone without a charger? 1, 2, 3– “Three months or so, I believe.”
“Three months?” Athena raised an eyebrow. She found herself uncharacteristically concerned. “Where have you been staying? If it’s not too personal and nosy of me to ask.”
“Not a problem,” Tobias waved off her apology. “I might have zoned out in the middle of your speech anyway,” he admitted with a slightly sheepish smile.
Athena smiled. “It wasn’t anything important, so we’re okay,” she admitted. “Trust me. I would have gotten your attention had I really needed it.” She sat up some, turning more towards him. “Next round’s on me.”
“I think I’m going to give you an eight for style and effort, and a two for not sticking the landing. Are you alright?”
