what if ? laura lee survived . . .
beth-anne, played by young sissy spacek
beth is a girl's name of hebrew roots, meaning “house.” it is a sweet short form of elizabeth, meaning “god is an oath,” and bethany, meaning “house of suffering.”
many wonder if laura-lee had survived, if she would eventually fall into the cultish beliefs the other yellowjackets adopt, especially since she was the one to first tell lottie she had a gift (her visions.)
beth-anne is a way to see that what if? take form into the story. she is the older sister of laura-lee, and is just as devout in her beliefs if not more than her sister. she grew up a believer, but became even more passionate about christ after seeing her sister be saved at summer camp. she believe she owes her life to jesus as that could have easily been her, and she is eternally grateful her sister survived.
beth-anne is a protective older sister, they’re in the same grade because beth-anne started schooling late (she was a sick infant and later toddler), but she still acts like she is more mature and knows more than laura-lee. she’s also on the team, being a defensive backup player, because she is tall and lanky, and dislikes having to take an offensive role as she feels it goes against her belief system.
in the wilderness, after her sister’s death, beth-anne leans on lottie for support in her grief, feeling she is the only one who understand a fraction of what she is going through. they both wear old clothing of laura-lee’s to memorialize her, and reminisce about old memories with her.
as the nights grow colder and their stomachs grow emptier, beth-anne starts to slowly spiral, her beliefs turn twisted, more vague, and it’s unclear if what she worships is still god, or it’s something darker. but still, she had an oath no? an oath to suffer, for it.
