Finally, Ascended Astarion HCs
(Sorry, I know it’s taken me a while)
Less of a HC and more of a fact, helping Astarion ascend is bad for him. It permanently changes him, not in a good way, and gives him the power to wreak havoc on the entire world. I personally believe that people are allowed to enjoy a character however you want, and enjoy whatever ending you get for the bg3 characters. However, Larian makes it pretty clear that ascending Astarion is not his ideal ending, and they low-key punish players for doing so.
He craves power, and honestly that’s understandable considering he’d been stripped of it for so long. Allowing him to succumb to that craving, however, just turns him into the same kind of monster he despises.
I think that in his ascended form, Astarion’s entire perspective on the world shifted. He is like 2 steps away from godhood, and the way his personality completely changes is reflective of that.
Astarion would still deeply value Tav, but he would no longer be able to love them like he had. He can no longer treat them like the equal he once saw them as, because now he views himself as above all. I mean, he is practically a god, and as we know from Gale and Mystra, a god cannot truly love a mortal.
This would be a toxic relationship!!! Astarion becomes a completely different person after he ascends and there’s no way that the person he becomes is one who is capable of having a healthy relationship.
Personally, I get the feeling that Astarion tries to convince himself that his feelings toward Tav haven’t changed. I don’t think he realizes that what he is feeling is more along the lines of possession. Or even if he does, he doesn’t want to feel that way.
The reason he tells himself that he wants Tav to become a vampire spawn and his consort is because he dreads having to live for eternity without them. The real reason is because vampires (especially fully fledged ones) have an innate craving for power and to have Spawn under their control and to do their bidding.
Also he probably does genuinely hate the idea of Tav dying. Simply
While you can initially decline becoming a vampire spawn, this cannot continue for forever. He sees Tav as an object, his property. Tav being able to deny his orders contradicts the view he has of them in his head. Tav will either have to acquiesce and agree to become his spawn, or they’d eventually break up.
While Ascended Astarion lacks self awareness in many ways, he’d still never turn Tav against their will. He’d want to convince/manipulate them into saying yes (which, to be clear, is still an abuse of power and not the same as them wanting to be a vampire spawn).
Astarion would never turn Tav into a full vampire.
Tav and Astarion would genuinely enjoy eachother’s company. For a while. I have no doubts that Astarion would be hella controlling over everything Tav does and says. Eventually, Tav would lose their personality/sense of self and Astarion would realize as much.
Ascended Astarion would be a love-bomber. He’d go from getting mad at Tav treating them like shit, to giving them the most luxurious gifts he could find.
Astarion would never let Tav starve, or make them attract victims via sex. That’s too far for him.
Tav would be used more as a set piece than as a partner, and honestly I could see it taking decades before they realized it. Astarion would choose to pretend that wasn’t the case though
