The first Art Car, a 1975 3.0 CSL, was originally conceived as a one-off collaboration between French art auctioneer and race driver, Hervé Poulain, BMW Motorsport’s Jochen Neerpasch, and American sculptor, Alexander Calder. It hit the track at Le Mans in 1975. Calder reportedly told Poulain to, “Win! But drive carefully!”
In 1958, artists Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Robert Indiana, Jack Youngerman, and others gathered on the roof of 3-5 Coenties Slip in New York City for a photo by Hans Namuth.
