On Mary

To expand further on what I said about Mary yesterday (making this a new post because I want it in the tags):

I've noticed that when it comes to canon ships for Arthur Eliza is far more popular than Mary is, despite Eliza never appearing in the game (she doesn't even get a last name!) and there being no indication that Eliza was anything other than a one night stand Arthur was co-parententing with

(In fact, Eliza's whole place in the story messes up the game's timeline but that's a topic for another post).

I think this really highlights the problem that fandom has with misogyny. Fans prefer a non-entity character over a complex, flawed female character.

'Oh but Surana, it's not misogyny. I like *this* female character over *that* female character'

No, you prefer a cardboard cutout over a well written *character*. Because that's essentially all Eliza is. She is the definition of fridged wife. We know nothing about her other than how her death affected Arthur.

Mary may not be the best written character in the game (Rockstar has an issue with writing women in general, though) but she is at least a character. And what's fascinating about her is she's essentially a female Arthur. Everything fans dislike about her? Guess what? That's Arthur! That's your blorbo!

Mary picked her family over Arthur? Arthur picked his over her. Abusive dad? Check. Younger brother? Check.

(I love Dutch but, man. He's not winning father of the year any time soon).

Mary refused to give up her life for Arthur? Well Arthur refused to give up his for hers, and Mary made the much more reasonable suggestion of 'stop doing crime, it will kill you' because, spoiler alert, it did!

Mary, like Arthur, was caught between love and loyalty and just like with Arthur the loyalty won.

'But she married someone else'. She was a woman in the late 1800s with a duty to her family and I've just established that loyalty is Mary's defining trait.

'But she told Arthur she never wanted to speak to him again'. Do you think it was easy for her to be around Arthur, knowing that she loved him but couldn't be with him?

Anyway, that's why I don't like or trust fans that don't like Mary Gillis Linton.

i never see anyone discuss arthur’s final message to the gang, and its in the least accessible place for anyone else; his journal. something so private to him, his entire perspective of events that occurred in the gang, his opinions, his loyalties, his personal life outside the gang.

the fact that he addresses mary, a woman who will never hear from him again and will never receive that message. the woman he’s loved that’s encapsulated his life, and he flips the famous ‘oh, arthur’ to ‘oh, mary’. it’s like an unreceived love letter.

imagine after john gets that satchel on the mountain to which he opens it, maybe a few months or even weeks after, and sees arthur’s worn, old journal he carried for years. he reads it slowly over a few weeks and he reaches the last entry. a message for him, a final warning. a warning to which he ignores and runs from, sealing his fate with the pinkertons.

arthur even pleads with dutch, one of his final pleas with the changed man. even bigger a gut punch when the man who raised him betrays him, walks away and leaves him to die alone. by “start listening to them”, arthur’s asking dutch to listen to him one last time.

he doesn’t.

arthur really loved him and everyone else like his family in his own way, and it’s that love and loyalty that killed him.

i see the messages as some sort of practice for what he’d say if he died whilst getting people out of camp before it all fell apart; like he was imagining he’d go. he’d maybe intented to write mary a final goodbye himself, but couldn’t find the words.

he might have expected to die facing west like he mentions, with the people he cared about, his illness leaving time for goodbyes like charles had told him, unlike people like hosea and lenny. but he doesn’t get that salvation.

Hi! I don't know if you're busy or not, but if you have some free time, I was wondering this: what do you think Arthur and Mary's children would look like? And if you have an idea of what they would look like, feel free to draw them.

This isn't a request, I'm just curious what your own interpretation of the Marthur's children would be like and you're free to do it or not; there's no pressure, so take it easy and I'll be fine with whatever decision you choose ^^

A baby girl and boy!! It’s difficult to achieve a likeness when drawing people’s children but I hope these somewhat make sense visually? Idk it was a lot of fun doing these anyways, so thank you for the sweet idea!

(Honestly I don’t see Mary and Arthur having any children even if things did work out between them but I couldn’t resist doing these either way)

P.S. I couldn’t come up with names for them so feel free to name them hehe

P.P.S it’s important to me that you know that the little girl is the eldest of the two children

One thing I've always thought about with Mary's first letter is how she wrote that Arthur knows it's from her because of her bad handwriting. It just always stuck with me because it makes you think that they must have sent letters so often over the years that they eventually memorised eachother's handwriting.

That maybe when they were younger, Arthur, in his early twenties, giddy and full of nerves as he rode to the post office to deliver his letter for the woman he loved? Cursing to himself as he fretted about what he'd written, worried about sounding like a fool?

Then Mary, at the same time, full of butterflies as she slipped out every day to check for a new letter from Arthur, and then writing her own letters before scrunching them up and rewriting them again and again, cursing to herself because of her bad handwriting? Wanting to make it as nice as Arthur's?

Do you think about how something as simple as sending letters was probably the steadiest thing keeping them together in their own chaotic lives, how it probably made them both feel so much less lonely through everything? Do you think about it. Do you. Do.

Going back to my roots :P
