Counting time to a new year like counting the sheep!  Year 2021 is almost here, so let’s count the sheep together! “Influenced sheep （ながされやすい羊）” by Ryota Unno 2014, Pigments, Acrylic and Gold Foil on Japanese paper, 40 x 40 cm Group of male sheep are following a lovely female sheep which is attracted by the small butterfly.  Sheep are an animal which tend to follow anything with the slightest of a trigger.  This funny movement is drawn by the Japanese artist Ryota in his piece “Influenced Sheep”.  Art Projects Gallery wish you all a Happy New Year! Born in Saga in Japan, Yasuhito Kawasaki is using the technique of casting that he continued to hone through the years as an artist. He is known for his trademark sculptures of innocent looking children. Right now at Art Projects Gallery, we are showing “Two Birds”, a sculpture work of an innocent child with two birds, wondering what they want to play with today! “Two Birds”, 2019, FRP, Acrylic and Urethanel, H34 x W32 x D16cm. For the artist, these characters are self-portraits, whether direct caricature renditions of himself or of other people and sometimes animals. In his perspective, one subconsciously sees others as extensions or semblances of the self. Many Yasuhito’s self-portraits are influenced by family members, whom he spends the most time with. Do you know what Japanese do before the New Year? To celebrate the start of a New Year, Japanese have a tradition to make some Mochi (rice cake)! “Preparation for New Year” by Ryota Unno 2018, Mineral Pigments (Iwa-Enogu), Acrylic & Gold Foil on Japanese Paper, 40 x 70 cm Ryota uses the traditional Japanese painting technique to present comical depictions of contemporary life, each scene with highly imaginative narratives imbued with the artist’s trademark humor. In “Preparation for New Year”, we can find some funny details like Mochi stuck on the bell and can’t chime, a part of mallet coming off while pounding, wrathful and muscular guardian of the Buddha came alive and powerfully pounding Mochi with a mallet, and many more... Influenced by genre paintings of the Edo period in Japan three centuries ago, Ryota engages the audience with highly intricate details and delightful visual storytelling, to explore and highlight social culture, local traditions and human behaviors from his unique and quirky point of view.
