Self-concept
- The self-concept is a schema that contains knowledge about us. It is primarily made up of physical characteristics, group memberships, and traits.
- Because the self-concept is so complex, it has extraordinary influence on our thoughts, feelings, and behavior, and we can remember information that is related to it well.
- Self-complexity, the extent to which individuals have many different and relatively independent ways of thinking about themselves, helps people respond more positively to events that they experience.
- Self-concept clarity, the extent to which individuals have self-concepts that are clearly defined and stable over time, can also help people to respond more positively to challenging situations.
- Self-awareness refers to the extent to which we are currently fixing our attention on our own self-concept. Differences in the accessibility of different self-schemas help create individual differences: for instance, in terms of our current concerns and interests.
- People who are experiencing high self-awareness may notice self-discrepancies between their actual and ideal selves. This can, in turn, lead them to engage in self-affirmation as a way of resolving these discrepancies.
- When people lose their self-awareness, they experience deindividuation.
- Private self-consciousness refers to the tendency to introspect about our inner thoughts and feelings; public self-consciousness refers to the tendency to focus on our outer public image and the standards set by others.
- There are cultural differences in self-consciousness: public self-consciousness may be higher in Eastern than in Western cultures.
- People frequently overestimate the extent to which others are paying attention to them and accurately understand their true intentions in public situations.

What it is to Eat (update)
·     Please sit down and place the napkin in your lap
·     Place your hands flat on the table and close your eyes
·     Breathe naturally allowing your body to relax
·     Now breathing through the nose inhale for a count of four then exhale for a count of four
·     Open your eyes
·     Look at the food item that is placed in front of you, observing the colours, shapes and textures
·     Pick up the item
·     Hold the item to your eye line
·     Keep your eyes focused on it whilst moving it backwards and forwards – towards and away from your face
·     Look at what you are touching
·     Pay attention to how it feels between your fingers
·     Squeeze it ever so slightly, observing the subtle changes in pressure and temperature
·     Close your eyes
·     Now sniff quickly
·     Smell again breathing in deep
·     Out loud describe the smell in one word
·     Open your eyes
·     Maintaining eye contract with the other participants
·     Bring the item to your mouth
·     Stroke your lips moving it from left to right, Observing textures and subtle tastes
·     Smell now breathing in deep
·     Stick out your tongue
·     Place the item to the tip of your tongue and very slowly move from left to right
·     Observing the textures and temperature
·     Place the whole item in your mouth, positioning it between your teeth
·     Bite once without chewing
·     Feel the changes in pressure and texture
·     Without swallowing chew slowly for 10 times listening to the sounds
·     Thinking about the sensations that occur
·     Swallow
·     Close your eyes
·     Breathe naturally through the nose
·     Open your eyes
·     Place your napkin on the table
·     Stand up and leave the room
These instructions will be amended to accommodate a 3 course meal (in miniature) and also instructions to drink water between the 3 different items of food.
What it is to Eat: Mock up of presentation space
The space will be divided into two sections. The first being where 10 participants will partake in a sensory eating experience. The second space is where i will be giving instructions via a microphone and speaker. As the numbers of who will attend the performance are not know i will invite the overflow to watch with me behind the walls of the participant space.
Two more temporary walls will be added to the participant space to completely isolate it from the studio, giving it division and a more intimate feel. I will also be using lights to set the atmosphere of the space, which is not shown in the pictures above.
