Are you 🫵 pissed off about the Lilo and Stitch monstrosity remake? Do you want to know how you can actually make a difference in supporting the people and ecosystems of Hawaii?

Tourism is a big issue in Hawaii (which the remake got rid of the original's commentary on because it makes foreigners look bad). I'm not gonna promote it, BUT I know that realistically, thousands of people arrive here every single day by the airplane-ful. And the majority of them aren't educated on the socio-cultural and economic impacts of tourism. SO, I'm making this post in an effort to educate visitors. If you or someone you know is visiting or moving to Hawaii (whether by circumstances in or out of your control), here are some suggestions on how you can give back!

You can donate to the Hawaii Community Foundation, which has been instrumental in giving aid to the displaced community of Lahaina after the Maui wildfires in 2023. They also provide scholarships to students of under-represented communities.

If you're interested in visiting Kualoa Ranch, you can do their Mālama Experience where you get your hands dirty giving back to the ‘āina (land)!

There are other organizations you can join to volunteer with, too, like Kupu and Mālama Maunalua. Check them out; maybe you can help with a beach cleanup or plant native trees! These are both non-profit organizations that accept monetary donations.

Visit the Bishop Museum to learn about Hawaiian history and culture! They also have events focused on sustainability and conservation.

If you're visiting Hilo on the Big Island, go visit the Laulima Nature Center! They're a non-profit aimed at protecting Hawaii's native species, and they even have an online store that ships to the US mainland and internationally! (After I post this, I'm gonna head on over and get myself a manu o Kū pin ♡)

A few other tips I have:

DO: Respect the locals' homes. Several beaches and hiking trails have access points in residential areas. Please be mindful to keep your voices down when passing by, and park ONLY in designated parking areas.

DO: Wear reef-safe sunscreen! Sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned in Hawaii because they are known to damage coral reefs.

DON'T: Approach wildlife, particularly honu (sea turtles) and 'īlio holo i ka uaua (Hawaiian monk seals). Stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from turtles and at least 50 feet (15 meters) away from monk seals. If you see someone harassing animals, report them to the statewide NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline: [phone]. You can also contact the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources.

DON'T: Collect sand, rocks, or other natural items to bring home with you. This is to protect the ecosystems and also out of respect for Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians), who have cultural beliefs regarding lava rocks in particular. Taking lava rocks is extremely disrespectful.

DON'T: Litter! Please throw away your waste in proper trash cans. If you see a bin that says "ʻōpala," that's a trash can!

Many Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are moving to the US mainland because the cost of living in Hawaii has been driven up so high (because of people moving here), they can't afford to live in their ancestral home. So, if you are going to visit or move to Hawaii, please:

- Make the effort to support local businesses, especially those owned by Native Hawaiians!

- Educate yourself and your loved ones about actual Hawaiian culture!

- Try Hawaiian food, like poi!

- Learn some Hawaiian words and don't be afraid to ask how to pronounce words correctly!

- Donate to a food bank!

- Watch films and read books written by Native Hawaiians!

My hope is that whoever sees this post will use it to educate themselves, their friends, and their families who are considering visiting.

My background is in sustainability and the environment, so that's what I know to suggest off the top of my head. If any Kānaka Maoli read this post and have suggestions to add, please do!

literally insane how this franchise went from being the butt of every joke on the internet to where we are now. like if you were online in the latter half of the 2010’s, i know you know what i’m talking about— you could just say “sonic the hedgehog” and that’s it, that was the punchline. it was like the lowest common denominator of internet humor but it was everywhere. the prevailing stance was that these games were bad, and if you like them, you should feel bad. and to be fair, those games were, sometimes, very bad, and with each new installment it looked less and less likely that they were ever gonna be good again. and now we have two critically-acclaimed feature films with a third on the way, a netflix original series and the latest game installment is predicted to be the highest-grossing in franchise history. there’s something kind of meta about sonic— the guy, not the brand— being all about never giving up and not caring what people think, because i really feel like the reason we’ve gotten this far is because the people who love these games never stopped loving them, even when people decided it was cheugy or cringe or whatever. man

Actually no, wait, I’m coming back to this. I’m gonna stream of conscious infodump, no one follows me anyway.

Talk about nurturing your inner child. I’m almost thirty and it feels like I can finally embrace this franchise in a way that I’ve wanted to since I was a teenager. I’m talking a dark chao plush on my car’s dashboard. Wearing a Sonic shirt to the gym. Walking up to a book store employee and saying “Hey! Do you know if you have this one in stock” and showing her the deluxe encyclo-speed-ia on my phone.

These were things I could not bring myself to do as a kid. I didn’t share what little merch I had, I didn’t wear it in public, and I got my dad to ask a store clerk about inventory, during the ages of 12-16. The fucking target demographic, because of what I’d heard and read between 2005-2010.

I would get hyped for video game shows on TV to review a Sonic game, only to get it made fun of. Classmates snatched my copy of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle from my backpack and made fun of Rouge in the hallway. The one time I felt safe enough to open up about fellow nerds, it started my true shift to ‘liking it ironically’ and making fun of it too. All I need to say is IGN and everyone knows what I’m talking about .

Of course I would end up meekly ask my dad to pick up Secret Rings for me with my allowance money.

One of the comments on this post said that watching Sonic’s renaissance has been healing in a way. I don’t exaggerate when I say that this warm reception the last two years is helping by allowing me to realise how much I continue to edit myself for people and how that needs to stop. It’s helping me to learn to accept myself, which is only the beginning of a long road ahead.

This silly little series is important to me, okay? And I’m long overdue in giving it the love and attention that it’s deserved from me.

"Why does Amy look like that??"

A theory

(And edited previous theory)

I reread the old one and, I'm not FULLY redoing it, but it was tacky, so here's an improved version.

1. The history of Amy Rose

1a. Classic Amy

Amy Rose made her video game debut in 1993’s Sonic the Hedgehog CD, as a non-playable character. In this game she is an 8 year old hedgehog girl kidnapped by the new antagonist, Metal Sonic. In the Japanese release, she was primarily known by her nickname Rosy the Rascal, although it is still stated that her real name is Amy Rose. She later appeared as a playable character in several ensemble spin-off games such as Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2, Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R. She did not appear in any of the early TV series, although she was included in most comics, including the Archie Comics series, the British Sonic the Comic and the French Sonic Adventures. TLDR; Amy first showed up in comics, although she was created for the video games. As shown above her first video game appearance was Sonic CD.

Amy Rose was created in response to a request from the character division of Sega’s licensing business, who wanted a character that could be the “Minnie” to Sonic’s “Mickey" However, it was felt that it would go against Sonic’s personality for him to locked into a standard cartoon relationship like Mickey and Minnie. Instead, it was decided that a one-way relationship, where Amy’s affection for Sonic is unrequited, would be more interesting ((via Sonic Wiki))

TLDR; Amy was created in response to a request to give Sonic a love interest, but feeling that would “Go against his character”, they made it a one-sided relationship.

Why am I letting you know this? Well to be acquainted and understand the significance of MODERN Amy, you need to know CLASSIC Amy.

Classic Amy had a very different design, although she was still pink, she wore different clothes, has different quills (very important) and is 8. She only showed up in Sonic CD and the comics, pretty much being reduced to a minor character. Today, Classic Amy makes very little appearances. Not showing up in Sonic Generations or Sonic Mania, and only appearing in the christmas episode of Sonic Mania Adventures, and most recently in the 50th anniversary comic.

1b. Modern Amy

When Sonic Team reunited and started work on their three-dimensional follow-up to the classic Sonic games, Sonic Adventure, it was decided they would revive the pink hedgehog and give her a starring role in the game. Like the rest of the returning cast, Amy was given an updated design by Yuji Uekawa. While Sonic, Tails and Knuckles all received minor design changes, Amy’s clothing and hairstyle were completely revamped. She also had her entire figure redesigned to make her appear older. In addition to her redesign, her official age was changed from 8 to 12. (via: Sonic Wiki)

TLDR; Amy was brought in as a main character in Sonic Adventure, getting a complete revamp in character design, unlike the other characters who only had minor changes.

Now we’re to the Amy we know and love! Short cute hair, a matching outfit, and older, but maybe not too much more mature, Amy Rose.

Another note, her design might have been revamped, but her personality wasn’t.

2. Why that Matters

Yes it does! But this is a theory, not a history, stay with me.

I wanted everyone to be extremely clear on her history, on the changes between CLASSIC and MODERN, which is very important to this theory. Not everyone us super aware of her history.

3. Her (modern) Design

While Sonic, Tails and Knuckles all received minor design changes, Amy’s clothing and hairstyle were completely revamped. (Via Sonic Wiki)

Now, Finally, let’s get to her design, and the weirdness of it.

3a. Her quills

Amy is a pink-furred anthropomorphic hedgehog with green eyes and peach skin on her muzzle and arms. Unlike other hedgehogs, her spines are not spiky in appearance - but are rather worn down like that of ordinary hair, somewhat resembling a bob cut. (Via: Sonic Wiki)

I’m going to assume you knew I was getting to this.

“Unlike other hedgehogs”, is a totally fair statement. Every other hedgehog we’ve seen, Have had their quills in a very specific manner.

Out, Long, and Back.

Very much in contrast with Amy’s, Down and Short.

Also note that Shadow and Sonic, on their heads, have six quills, silver having two long ones and 5 bang quills. Basically, their quills are layered, Amy’s however, is not. It’s one right next to each other.

I note the layered quills as very important. Makes sense for mobian hedgehogs right? I mean they have layered quills like that in real life, even if there’s a lot more.

This is very important why? Because there’s another species that has their quills/spines/hair/etc. right next to each other, instead of layered.

Interesting how close it is to Amy’s own hairstyle isn’t it?

Let's expand on this, shall we?

Knuckles, Tikal, and seemingly the entire Knuckles Clan have three spines on the sides, and one, shorter and thicker, one on the back:

Amy has five, two less than the echidnas and one less than Sonic and Shadow.

However, right now numbers don't matter. What matters is both Amy and the echidna's have multiple on the sides, next to each other, than one large (slightly shorter) one in the back.

3b. Her Back

Now listen, if you're a sonic artist, you've noticed this.

There’s one specific thing that other hedgehogs have, that Amy Rose is lacking.

Back Quills

None on her back. Absolutely zero.

Strange for a hedgehog.

3c. Coloring

This one may be inconsequential, seeming as pink was her original color, but stay with me.

Now, based on the lack of examples, we don't know the average hedgehog colors, or even if there is one. All we know is Shadow doesn't look normal, having the coloring of the Black Arms. Out of the four we have we can assume only that hedgehogs don't have any stripes or markings usually.

However, when it comes to at least two clans, we have a wide pool of echidna examples.

The Nocturnus clan are seen in three basic colors, deep red, orange, and white. Although weather the white comes from age is unknown.

The Knuckles clan is shown deep red, orange (although only on Tikal), and...

3d. What are you getting at

Now you may think that i'm implying that Amy is an echidna! Which is not so. I used to think this until a friend pointed out that despite lacking specific hedgehog qualities and having specific echidna qualities, Amy Rose still had hedgehog parts.

Her ears are clearly a hedgehog's, and her tail gently curves up, instead of zigzagging like the echidna's. As well as having a clear hedgehog eye shape, instead of sharing the separate round eyes with Knuckles and Tikal.

So what am I getting at?

4. Hybrids

This will be a quick one, hybrid’s HAVE existed in the sonic universe

Just recently reintroduced to modern fans, Fang the Sniper has always been a hybrid.

Touma would state on Twitter that he designed Fang with a jerboa (トビネズミ?) motif in his mind.[6] However, the sales departments of Sega decided upon him being half jerboa and half wolf in Japan, and a weasel in North America.[7][8] (Via: Sonic Wiki)

Hybrids aren't uncovered territory. they've existed, and they've shown to be a mash of the two species.

Amy Rose being a hybrid would explain the mixture of hedgehog and echidna qualities, mixed much like Fang having jerboa and wolf qualities mixed.

5. The whole picture

I’ve shown you the pieces, now lets put it together.

Each of these things with her new design seperetly would mean nothing, but together it means a lot.

But you HAVE to be thinking, “There’s no way that was purposeful.” and I get it. When I first thought of this theory, that was the roadblock that kept me from fully believing it, until I did some research.

I don’t believe it was the idea from the beginning. And by that, I mean CLASSIC Amy.

She looks like a hedgehog, she has back spines, she has normal, layered, quills. As well as Amy debuting before Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994)

MODERN Amy, however. Is a different story.

Remember when I told you to remember a certain paragraph?

Amy’s design was changed drastically for Sonic Adventure, even saying so in this paragraph. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles got minor things, like eye colors and more dexterity. Eggman got an outfit change. Amy’s whole body was changed. Quills, Back, Outfit, Everything.

Once again, you’re wondering, “Why does this matter?”

Amy was completely redesigned for Sonic Adventure. A game that include, features, hell, CENTERS around echidnas. Everything canonical about echidna appearances that I've shown, started in the same game Amy was completely redesigned.

Every flashback is about the Knuckles clan, and how Chaos ended up like that™️ because of them.

In a game where you have a bunch of echidnas, I, personally, feel like i’d be difficult to make the mistake of 50% of Amy Rose looking like one. Even giving her a dress the same color as Knuckles, that even has the same crescent moon on the chest.

Sonic Adventure strove to make Amy more apart of the story, more involved and importantly, interesting. Looking from the standpoint of designing her as part echidna, for the echidna game, everything strange about her design makes sense.

So either Amy Rose is an Echidna/Hedgehog hybrid and either doesn’t know or is too dumb to tell anyone or they did this on complete accident and wanted her to look like a girl theory completed

Here's a list of important notes for tumblr usage:

Don't censor words, particularly trigger warnings. Tumblr has a very functional blacklist (found in your settings) that can filter by post content and/or tags. But the word needs to actually be present for the filter to work. Censoring words like r*pe is actively harmful to people attempting to avoid those topics.

Use tags liberally, you have as many as you want, but don't tag unrelated shit. You'll get reported for spam really fast if you do.

Set an avatar and reblog things, otherwise you look like a bot.

You are not obligated to have your real name anywhere in your blog/bio/etc. Most people here use handles.

You can turn your ask box & anons on or off if you are experiencing any kind of harassment. You can also turn off replies on your posts, and turn off reblogs if you need to.

Tumblr has keyboard shortcuts on desktop. You can find them listed under the blog/account menu. Go learn them, they make life so much easier.

Reblog things. Seriously. Also set your dash in chronological order. You can maintain several blogs if need be, but reblogging things is normal, expected, and how you pass along stuff you enjoy.

The majority of people aren't reading your card/dni/blog bio before they reblog stuff. Posts get passed around and the OP often isn't the focal point of the post. Learn to live with it.

Fic writers: you have unlimited words, do not post fics as images.

Reblogs with comments/tags are encouraged. It's not like twitter's QRTs. The OP will see everything there. Know that before you comment.

You have a queue. This means you can set posts up ahead of time to run while you're busy. You can also completely ignore this and just spam your follows whenever you're online. Both are very commonplace

It's not weird to go through someone's blog and reblog old posts. That's actually very normal. If you add /chrono to the end of a tumblr tab then you can view an

"Spam" liking and reblogging isn't a thing that is a problem. This is invented by people I do not understand. If someone claims this is a problem, they can learn how to turn off or manage their notifications.

The only form of promotional posts that tumblr has is "blaze". There is no ad targeting or any kind of invasions of privacy with blaze. You just get subjected to w/e someone wants to show you. If you want to give tumblr some money to help the company keep going and provided an alternative to twitter, it's not a bad way to do it. You can make people look at cat photos.

Also, we have fun colors here. Plus actual formatting ability. Use it!

People lie on here for fun. Don't accept everything you see at face value, check the reblogs/replies or google something if you're skeptical! Critical thinking is good!

Above all else, be chill, use your block button if you need to, and have fun.

Addition for the fic writers: please please please add the read more option on your post. On desktop it's the orange squiggly lines that come up when you click on the textbox.

On mobile I believe it's : readmore : (without spaces).

The read more option shortens your post, putting whatever you have under the read more hidden until someone clicks on it. This is super helpful for mobile users if you have a long post so they don't have to scroll forever past your thing.
