I heard that in Amy's original debut she was meant to be 2 years younger than Sonic (16) and his cheerleader (possibly at the same highschool, but I don’t trust my memory on that detail so much), but he explicitly treated her like a little kid
I have no idea if any of this is true, I can't find proof on it. But humouring the idea and imagining it as Amy's true origin, what do you think about it? In a fannon, headcanon sense or in canon lore
I've seen a variety of different Amy early concepts, not to mention pre-Amy concepts (like Sonic's would-be human girlfriend Madonna.) They're all fun. It's interesting to think of what might have been.
I think the idea of Amy being Sonic's cheerleader was largely for the Sonic the Hedgehog Manga back in 1992 where there was the little nerdy hedgehog Nicky who's super alter ego was Sonic (mind you, in that continuity, not even Nicky knew about Sonic, which feels... weirdly related to how Fleetway handled their version of Super Sonic? I don't know that might be a stretch.) Wasn't high school- it was primary school.
And- yes- she was suppose to be only slightly younger than Sonic across all continuities (comics, games, manga, what have you), but for one reason or another, that information didn't get to/wasn't properly translated to the Archie staff, and so when they put her in the Sonic Archie Comics, she was 8. Then you have the whole magic Ring of Acorn thing to make her older to fit in line with the Adventure Games (I don't know man, I don't know, don't ask me). @squid-in-a-party-hat covered that, and possibly @samobservessonic (though Sam largely does Fleetway and other European Publications) (Either way, please go check them out. They're both lovely, lovely people.) Again, this was only for one comic publication, not in the series as a whole.
As for me? Yeah, I think Amy is right around the same age as Sonic, just a touch younger, like a year or two. That seems to have been consistent through all of the games, which is the only canon I care about (keeps the faffing around about retconing lore largely out of the way when you do it like that, in my opinion XD) As an aside, I'm so glad they got rid of the character ages on the official website/game manuals. All the back and forth was immensely frustrating. You see, Amy's age wasn't the only one that was moved around. My boy Charmy Bee had a similar issue, and don't even get me started on the hubbub about Shadow. Having the way the character's are designed, how they speak, and how they act be the indicators of their ages and leaving it up to the fans makes everything so much cleaner in my opinion.
If you want to talk about Amy being, 'Sonic's Cheerleader,' I mean... yeah, she kinda always has been. He saved her from Eggman/Metal Sonic the first time they met at Never Lake years ago, and ever since then, she's been one of his top supporters. She knows he's going to be able to save the day. She's not blind, though. Sonic can be a little selfish and rude, he can be shortsighted, he can be a bit of a bitch- but if Eggman, GUN, or anyone else shows up to try to cause harm, he's going to put himself in the way. Amy knows this to be a fundamental truth, so if anyone ever questions Sonic, she's gonna put that to rest right away. Off the cuff, evidence of this is in SA2 and Sonic06.
As for what I think about it? I think it's a prime example of some sort of failure to communicate between the various branches and locals of Sega. As of late, that seems to have been smoothed out, but who knows.
