Mary and Max. One of the best stories about friendship I’ve seen.
Adam Elliot was born 2nd January 1972, Victoria, Australia. He grew up on a prawn farm with his father, mother and three siblings. However, one of his siblings dies from an asthma attack when he was young. Originally, Elliot wanted to be a vet but did not have the grades needed to enter university. (This is why a lot of dead animals in his films) He studied at Victorian College where he got a diploma in film and television, specialising in animation. It is there where he made his first short film Uncle (1996). Since then, Elliot has made Cousin (1998), Brother (1999), Harvie Krumpet (2003) and his first feature-length film Mary and Max (2009). The film Harvie Krumpet won an Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 2003.
I admire the use of colour in Elliot’s work. Or the lack there of, as the case may seem. However, as seen the Mary and Max trailer above, there is some colour used in this monochrome world to differentiate from places and people. The characters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with great personalities written for them and showing their flaws; which makes them all the more human than most animated characters. I have also heard that Elliot a type of tremor that effected his art as seen in his prior films. However he uses this form his own style unexpectedly. I wish I could also use my own flaws to my advantage in my work as well.
