dust. dust everywhere. her head throbbed as she rose from the dust, the ashes, the incinerated bones of the city. she couldn’t remember the exact point she had blacked out - just that whatever had happened had put her in a bad position. she realized that the dust, the remnants of each building - it could have been a product of her powers. but she was able to control them now, right?? that was the only reason she was still allowed out in the field. even so – when the earth was in such a desperate situation such as this, it needed everyone with the capacity to be a hero.
now she remembered. the multiplying number of aliens – she was half-alien herself, but these relentless fuckers were gross, totally perpetuating the stereotype – and the losses. so many of them. anyone could be a hero, powers or no powers. she found the source of her headache. daisy’s comms headset lay snapped in half on the ground beneath her. the jagged edge had left a deep scratch on the side of her head, but it wasn’t bleeding. at least, not yet. she rubbed her groggy eyes at the sight of the ruins of her only way of contacting her team, the people at shield, hell, anyone with a title, for that matter. there were broken buildings surrounding her. she recognized one as the cell tower. “isn’t that just peachy. i guess that means the wifi’s out.” she mumbled underneath her breath. seeing as there was really no reason to stay put, daisy followed one foot with the other, ignoring her slight limp. she cleared a path out of the debris with her powers, letting the rumble vibrate throughout her body. the team – where were they? were they alive?? daisy gulped at the thought of their limp bodies in the hands of those nasty ass et lookalikes. she would kill every single last one of them if she needed to. or try to, at least.
the groggy girl felt eyes watching her - her powers usually stimulated that kind of reaction, but this was different. they were following her with uneasy intentions. the rubble plummeted to the ground, making a loud crashing noise as it made contact with the earth. “listen, i don’t think you want a piece of this. especially if you’re one of thanos’s – thanos’?? i don’t know – creepy minions. i promise, i taste bitter. like, really sour. like… like, expired meatloaf. not that you would know how that tastes, you’re from another planet. unless you’re not one of them – never mind. just show yourself, man, before i send a brand spankin’ new fault line headed your way.”
when the aliens had first attacked—— and you’d think it’d at least get old after you'd already experienced one extra terrestrial invasion, yet here he was, still as blindsided as he had been during the chitauri attack; struggling to make sense of what was happening as he fought his way through wave after wave of the things. at least, if it was any consolation, the things were still as ugly as they had been the first time around, and as far as his therapist was concerned, making connections was important. then again, as he slammed his fist into the head of another alien, his shield arm coming up from under to cover his left, maybe this hadn’t been e x a c t l y what the doctor had had in mind when she told him to try and make links between the happenings in his life.
—— no, with a small, laboured grunt at the sheer force of energy it took to push his way through the last of the visible aliens around him, this probably wasn’t what the good doctor had had in mind at all. and yet, as his breaths escaped him in short, sharp pants, and his fingers remained just as numb as they had a few hours back after the countless abuse he’d put them through ( the aliens were ugly, but man, were their heads ever HARD ) the last of his worries just happened to be along the lines of getting to his therapist’s office.
instead, with his eyes turned to the direction of the tower, the only thing he could find himself wanting was a hot shower and a bed to fall into for hopefully the next few years. having already been out on the streets for a few days, and after losing his cowl and one of his gloves somewhere during the first day, the rest of the time had been spent with a fair share of his body covered in grime, dust and the smatterings of alien blood, among other unidentifiable liquids. not that it was the worst thing he’d ever found himself covered in, but it certainly wasn’t what he’d call a preference.
‘ expired meatloaf isn’t really the worst thing you could eat, y’know? mean, it gave me the worst stomachache i’d had in years, but when you’re runnin’ low on options... ’ when steve had first made his intentions known to take to the streets in search of any survivors, he had been met with a few disagreements and concerns, which —— understandable, but nothing he’d allow himself to be talked down by. people NEEDED to know that they were sought out, that others hadn’t given up on them. they needed it, and more importantly, steve had needed something to do. it hadn’t been the most selfless of reasons, no, but as he finally came across a familiar face, perhaps it made his reasons worth it. ‘ good to see you’re still as revved up as ever, daisy —— you been holding up, okay? ’
