Location sketches - using white bases for the objects for obvious contrast to clearly show added elements.
Week 3 After affects finished Product - Principles of animation. videos used as reference for helicopter task https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmJVwvDW8bE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AeeZoXFGj8
Week 2 After affects finished Product - Principles of animation.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 10 Principles Observed: Anticipation- there’s a lot of instances of anticipation within this video, mostly before the main character of the video hits something such as moving his leg back before kicking the table over or holding back his jacket before throwing at someone. Staging- the characters are in a rather colourless void before they start interacting with one another to show that these are the people we should actually be paying attention to as they interact with one another - it also gets more dramatic at the very end of the video to show the characters flare along with the ranther senseless situation they’ve made for themselves. Arcs- Arcs are shown briefly within the first part of the video to show character movement being swift and easy to follow - along with the direct action lines that show things being moved or thrown about. Timing- the timing stays mostly the same within this video, moving along with each line of the song to show that the character is meant to be singing themselves. Exaggeration- The movements of the main character are very erratic just to show how high energy they are along with moving to the song - it gives the intention they are a rather high energy character. Appeal- The simple style and expression of the characters allows the audience to easily read what's happening in the situation and the characters actions themselves and how the rest of the people react to them are meant to make it seem charming if a bit silly.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 9 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- When the Suited man moves downwards, his torso squashes to show it’s moved down and he’s lowered his body before stretching back to its original mass. There are also a few instances where it’s used to show that characters are breathing or raising their arms to do something. Straight ahead + Pose to Pose- Follow + Overlapping- As the scientist in the second scene moves to show whats in front of him, both his tie and labcoat move just after his body does to show that they are attached and flow as clothing should. Arcs- the characters on the sofa move closer together within an arc to show they’re slowly becoming more intense within their gameplay before being launched back to show relief/satisfaction. Timing- Some of the scenes within this video have less frames in order to hit with the timing of the song, the man in the tube is a good example where a few frames are shown for dramatic affect as the song continues and moves into a heavier beat. Solid drawings- The majority of the characters are shown from multiple angles and 2 point perspective to give them a sense of being solid. Appeal- The entire video is centred around gaming and the interludes reflect that with footage of different video games being played in the background to help emphasise the use of games as a motif.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 8 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- The two characters play fighting squash and stretch both when rising and falling against the floor to show their bodies are being pushed against it, the yellow cats limbs also squash slightly to show their muscles moving as they launch off after the other cat. Staging- The detailed but less saturated background allows the characters to stand out against and they remain centred until leaving the scene to be the point of interest. the ghost is also placed against a black background to have a stark contrast to their white lining. Arcs- the two interacting cats tumble together within an arc to show one has fallen back naturally against the floor once pinned down Secondary action- As the ghost cat moves to look towards the centre of the cavern their tail also moves to show the character balancing itself and moving to compose itself. Exaggeration- The yellow cat moves up slightly before pinned down again to emphasise the point that they’ve been pushed against the floor and been bested before moving forward. Solid drawings- There is a decent amount of depth within the first part of the video to show the characters are within a 3d space. The yellow cat also does a 180 turn while getting up and stay in proportion to show its an entire entity.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 7 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- As the eyeballs move across the screen they squash and stretch to seem unnatural and almost as if they’re in some kind of liquid substance. Moving closer together and further apart as if they’re all parts of different entities to give a sense of unease. Anticipation- As the character goes to touch the puddle, they pause before hand as they outstretch their claws to show the audience they’re about to interact with it - hesitating as if unsure they should actually be touching the weird liquid. Staging- The changing from a grey neutral background to the crimson red once the character has been moved into the portal shows that they’re in a stranger dimension of existence, with their colours also changing to highlight this while still standing out against the background. Arcs- As the character looks at themselves to see they’ve changed, they do it in an overarching manner from one hand to the other - giving themselves and the audience a natural arc to look over. Timing- the comparison of the slower movement when the character is looking down to the ground compared to being pulled in is to show the unease and bizarre nature of what’s occurring - suddenly being landed in this new world that makes very little sense to the character. Exaggeration- When the character is dragged into the puddle, they smear quite obviously to show that they are being sucked in very quickly and without warning (which is also shown via the shocked expression) Solid drawings- The very first scene has the characters skull move upwards in a way to show the dimensions of the eye rims along with the rest of the head to give it depth and interest. Appeal- The stark contrast between the two dimensions the character is within gives a lot of interest to the audience and the red crimson helps convey the sense of doom and confusion that the character within the scene is also feeling - helping the viewer relate to what is going on.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 6 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- squash and stretch is observed within a lot of the character movement to show the changing mass of the main characters tail along with their torso Anticipation- during the player select scene at 0:41 the character on the left side is in a braced pose to anticipate Staging- The characters within the video all standout the majority of the time against a space background but some assets of the designs have their opacity changed to blend further in with the rest of the images used to then pop out almost unexpectedly. Arcs- The character moves to the music while wearing headphones, moving their head in an arc to show a fluid movement. Secondary action- The tail also moves along with the head movement in the opposite direction to show the character is completely enveloped in the music they’re listening to. Solid drawings- The turnarounds that are introduced early into the video show that the designs are solid and are working within a 3d space - the turnarounds also emphasise this. Appeal- The use of assets, colours and overlays gives the entire video a very strong aesthetic that works throughout the video and is extremely charming to an audience.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 5 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- Squash and stretch is used here on the 3d models to give the illusion that the characters are actually breathing along with moving their bodies to the time of the music. Staging- All the characters are given their own colour backgrounds which are all fairly simple along with being outlined to be focused on. Arcs- All the characters tail move in arcs to make it seem like they’re floing naturally Secondary action- Along with the characters movements the head bobbing is also used to be timed as if they’re bobbing along with the music to seem more immersive to the audience. Exaggeration- the characters expressions are exaggerated to show the mood of the video being up beat. Appeal- The poppy bright colours work really well with the music thats part of the animation, the characters are also highly saturated and work with the white outline to be outstanding and enjoyable to look at.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 4 Principles Observed: Staging- he detailed but less saturated background allows the characters to stand out against and they remain centred until leaving the scene to be the point of interest. Arcs- the characters constantly move around in arcs, circling one another to show conflict or points of interest for the audience between character interaction. Solid drawings- working from several perspectives to show the main character is a complete creature, especially with the turnaround Appeal- The motif of the “halos” around characters heads is a good representation of characters choices or actions. The slow movements of the character also give a grace to the animation that work with the slow lull of the song.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 3 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- Theres a lot of squash and stretch within the characters chest fur to show that the fur is bouncing up and down while still maintaining mass. Anticipation- The opening of the top of the wing anticipates the entire character flying up into the air with its wings open. Staging- The whole scene is very close up to the character with the simple golden background in contrast to the designs bold lineart allowing it to stand out. Slow in + Slow out- The character slows into the final frames to properly show both the expression on it’s face and the claws extended outwards allowing the audience to process what’s happening within the scene. Arcs- The paws of the character move forward by going back into themselves slightly within an arc to show the speed the creature is moving at along with making the movement seem more realistic. Secondary action- As the creature moves upwards and its wing flow outwards the tail also moves upwards and bounces to show it’s being dragged up into the air. Timing- The use of more frames upon the paw close up shows that the creatures is speeding up and then using that force to move up into the air. This follows through as it flies, less frames being used as it closes up to the camera to show its moving a lot faster. Appeal- The style of the animation is very inky and painterly - it allows the animation to flow nicely and along with colour palette gives a warm vibe for the audience.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 2 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- There’s a small amount of squash and stretch in the characters leg movement just to show that it has been placed on a solid surface and that the character has moved naturally. Staging- The blinding light behind the two characters is used to make them center stage and focus the attention on the both of them. This also goes for the darkness in earlier scenes - leaving the character in a dark frame allows them to be the focal point without difficulty. Arcs- The cats’ tails and ears are moving in arcs in a certain direction to show that some kind of force, assumedly wind, is pushing against them. The first frames of the video also have the character arching their back along the spine. Secondary action- While the character is lipsyncing to the song the eyes are also moving and dilating to show the expression of the character. Exaggeration- The lipsyncing is being exaggerated to show that the character is speaking and most likely something of importance. the movement of the ears in an earlier scene would also count as exaggeration to show the force behind the wind that is blowing against both characters. Appeal- Their is a constant tone of colour within the clip to unify the entire animation, the use of simpler drawings between certain parts also allows the audience to absorb more information as those parts pass very quickly.
Principle Research Task 2: Clip 1 Principles Observed: Anticipation- The head tilt before the touching of noses shws the two characters moving closer and that they’re about to interact with one another. The still before the dark cat falls also shows the failure of the move when added with the character expression. Follow + Overlapping- There’s follow through in features such as the cheek tufts and tail that show continuous movement. Slow in + Slow out- The majority of this animation is characters easing into different positions. Arcs- The tail of the black cat arcs inwards slowly and the fall of the character also follows an arc downwards to show they were bounding forward. Timing- The movements of everything all seem rather stilted before jumping to the next frame, showing an uneasy situation. Exaggeration- The cut between the cat falling forward and then onto their back is very quick showing it was probably a nasty and unintentional fall. Appeal- The aesthetic and colour palette of the animation is meant to unify everything together.
Principles Research Task 1: Clip 3 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- Theres a large amount of stretch and squash in this clip to show the impact of hits along with the tensing of muscles to show the strength going into the attacks. Anticipation- Before the main character falls into the scene there is a sparkle effect, this draws attention to the centre of the scene as the man slowly grows in size as he enters into perspective. Without this viewers might have been lost as to were to look due to the simple design of the background. The reactions and recoils of the characters are also used to anticipate the pain and force of the attacks against them, shows them preparing for what will happen to them and making it clear to the viewer. Staging- All the actions are very up close to keep the vibe of being an intense scene Follow + Overlapping- Clothes and hair follow the movements all the characters make, whether it being hit or the main character falling from the sky. Secondary action- Explosions are caused by result of the main actions, emphasise the force and power of the actions. Blood is also used to exaggerate the strength, for example when bloody is pulled out from the eyes of an attack (3 seconds), this shows extreme outcomes due to the main action once again. Timing- As the main character reaches full scale before crashing into the pile (1 second) he eases in with more frames slightly to this position giving us a moment to acknowledge his presence into the scene and design. Exaggeration- The background has speed lines around the characters as certain actions are performed, for example the fall. This gives the idea of speed and descent into the frame without having to draw a detail background around the character. There is also exaggeration in the outcomes of the attacks, they are very over the top creating a sense of realism without reality. Appeal- The design is very bright and simple making it interesting and appealing to the viewers eyes. The shapes and forms used are also very eye catching.
Principles Research Task 1: Clip 2 Principles Observed: Squash + Stretch- Gru’s torso squashes inwards on itself when raising his legs to show the bend inwards of his entire body, stretching back down to show the item hes holding is too heavy to raise all the way. Anticipation- The legs swing back slightly before raising the shrink ray in order to show the audience what is about to occur. Staging- Framing of this scene is used to both show how high up gru and the minions are along with how easily they could be discovered if not careful. The frame that looks downward also shows the shark underneath them deeming the situation dangerous. Follow + Overlapping- Grus legs continue to swing once he sets them back down to show that they’re not on solid ground and continue the swing Slow in + Slow out- The movement of the swing slows in and out as it reaches its max heights on both sides giving it a pendulum effect and momentum. Arcs- As Gru tries to move upwards he also bends in an arc to show the natural curve of a spine. Secondary action-The added action of the arms shaking being caused by the swing adds power to the main action. It adds the stress and importance that the characters are feeling in the moment, which is clearly conveyed to the viewer. Timing- There are less frames during Gru's pull up and swings as the action is quick. More speed as the swing climaxes and then slows down again as it looses momentum. Also the pause as the audience waits to see if Gru does successfully pull himself up adds strength to the importance of the action. Exaggeration- The tensing of grus hands allows the audience to believe hes struggling and emphasises how difficult a situation he’s in.
Principles Research Task 1: Clip 1 Principles Observed: Squash and stretch- Owl’s body Squashes when walking in the air, showing how the entire body moves up and down as its legs move. This is most pronounced in it’s stomach and face/cheeks Anticipation- Before the owl launches up the entire mass moves down to show its about to take off. Slow in and out- Slowing out of the launch and pausing momentarily to then slow into the walking animation to show the fluttering of wings and present the birds elegant movements. Arcs- The owl moves upwards with a slight arc around the spine to make the movement more natural. Timing- More frames are added to the rising of the flight before slowing down to make the owl floating seem more graceful. Solid drawings- The character design is made up of mostly basic shapes that are easy to draw within different angles and the turn around while walking gives the illusion of the creature being 3 dimensional. Appeal- The expressions and movement of the owl are smooth and transition well from smiling to a more glaring face, giving it emotion.
