Reasons to Persist
Motivation: Some of us have a lot; All of us want more.
To give up is to kick the bucket, to cut the line, or to unplug the lifeline. To keep going is to give the last push, reel in the catch, or to recuperate. Allow me to explain. We have all given up more than a few times, but that’s all that they are: instances of failure. One cannot truly determine their wealth, success or victory just because of one action, and neither should one’s actions determine their failure.
4. Betting Odds
Well here are your odds. Say that you are in the last 100 meters of a 5-kilometer race and you have one person directly in front of you. You have at least a 33.3% chance of winning. You can give up. You give it everything you’ve got and fall short- or you bust your ass and walk that guy down. Remember: you have a 1 in 3 chance of success. So how does this apply to you every day? Well, it doesn’t…necessarily. The fact lies in that we do not have these perfect scenarios where we can apply this, but it definitely applies every time you step into the gym, onto the track, or start any workout for that matter. Stay on it. Be sharp, and know that you have the odds [almost] in your favor…and for peace of mind I would totally put money on you, because 1 in 3 is better odds than me breaking even in blackjack.
3. Plateaus = Misleading (DNE)
Not a big surprise that if you practice a lot, you will get better. Any one who claims that plateaus exist or that they have peaked have probably experienced what we call “burnout”. What is burnout? Burnout in my opinion is a phenomenon that occurs when someone has not given their every effort into something they do. They see no results because they have not put in the proper effort and this is when the dark cloud of negativity sets in. They lose hope; they blame it on little things at first like a poor night of sleep or something that they ate. The truth is that if you are obsessed, passionate and constantly practicing at something you do, you will nail it, every single time. So please, for the sake of Oreo cookies and all that is good- just try harder…it pays off.
2. Mission Possible
You know that Adidas ad that reads: “Impossible is Nothing”? Well I hate that ad. Don’t get me wrong, it sells; however, it also gives us the notion that things in life are so damn difficult that we viewed it as not possible. When we put said limitations in our mind, it gives us a reason to throw in the towel, to not finish our last circuit, to not step up the pace. We have these limitations because most people wouldn’t ever dare to do what you plan to do. On the other hand, this is how champions arise, they don’t believe that these limitations exist, giving us the notion that they will do anything to succeed.
My mantra before every single work out is this: Do what others won’t.
1. Your Reasons are Probably “Excuses”
Picture a scenario where no one had any desire to do anything productive. There would be no reason to go out and run around. There is no exercise, because everyone has a high basal metabolism and weight gain isn’t possible because our body is so healthy and efficient that daily exercise is not necessary.
This world. Does not. Exist.
Now please just for a moment picture that if we refused to exercise for five minutes a day, we would die. Like really die. Dead. Cya later. Bye. Dead.
For some, this world totally exists. It is obesity. It is heart problems. It is pre-hypertension. These are all are so common today that they are just accepted as common conditions. Miraculously, your life span for whatever reason lengthens with daily exercise…Even when you feel like the world is turning dark around you in the final stretch of your run, the path to the other side of life is actually getting longer. What you gain from going on a walk every day is more than just a good feeling. That walk might save your life one day. This might not make sense to you now, but trust me, when I found out that my close friend developed type-two diabetes I realized the fragility of health. Much of the beauty in life lies in our resilience, but the strongest do not see it as resilience, because that implies our weakness. If you can just go head strong, without asking questions as to why things are crashing down on you, you’ll find a silver lining. Your story is unique and your situation probably is not ideal. But, you should always be fighting, scratching in those moments for just a little bit more.
Al Pacino quotes in Any Given Sunday during a halftime speech: “Life’s a game of inches.”
No excuses; make every inch count.
The bigger picture:
Go out, move a mountain, make a billion, run a marathon, work for charity, just don’t give yourself an excuse for not doing it. Your potential legacy is more important than the small world that might criticize you. You can do great things. Now go out and do it. Make today the first day of the most productive run you have ever had in your entire life, and keep the fire burning.
Your life is happening right now.
