pairing: luke castellan x female reader
word count: ~1.5k
warnings: kronos mention, angst, betrayal themes, canon-typical tension
tropes: luke redemption arc, "i choose you", morally grey luke, confrontation, hurt/comfort
setting: post-camp, pre-betrayal divergence / alternate timeline
summary: Kronos demands Luke eliminate the one thing standing in the way of his loyalty. Unfortunately for Kronos, that thing is you!
The first thing you notice is the silence.
Not the peaceful kind, not the quiet that settles over Camp Half-Blood at night when the fires die down and the cabins glow softly through the trees. This silence feels wrong and heavy, like the air itself is holding its breath.
You're standing in the ruins of an abandoned temple somewhere far beyond the camp borders. Broken marble columns lie scattered across the floor, and moonlight filters through cracks in the ceiling.
Across from you stands Luke Castellan. And behind him, something darker. You can feel it even if you can't see it properly: the presence presses against your mind like cold fingers.
Luke's sword hangs loosely in his hand, but he isn't attacking, he's just watching you.
Your voice echoes through the ruined hall. For a moment, nothing happens, then his jaw tightens.
"You shouldn't have followed me", he says.
The words are calm, but something about them feels strained, like they're being forced through clenched teeth.
"You disappeared, what did you expect me to do?", you reply.
Luke laughs softly, but it's not his usual laugh, it sounds tired.
"You were supposed to stay safe, that was the whole point.", he says.
Behind him, the air distorts. A voice slithers through the temple; it's ancient, cold even.
The sound makes your skin crawl.
Luke doesn't turn around. "I'm handling it", he mutters.
The presence grows heavier.
Your heart sinks, you look at Luke. He still hasn't looked back at the voice. His eyes are locked on you.
"You should leave", he says quietly.
"You know I'm not going to do that."
Luke exhales slowly, running a hand through his hair. "(Y/N), please."
The way he says your name is different, it's desperate.
Behind him, the shadows twist.
"You know what must be done."
The words echo like a command, making Luke's grip tighten on his sword.
Your chest tightens. "Luke", you say softly.
For the first time since you arrived, his gaze falters - just for a second.
"Don't make this harder than it already is", he says.
"You're the one making it hard."
His expression sharpens. "You think this is easy for me?"
The word lands between you, the temple goes still.
Luke stares at you like you just said something impossible.
"You don't have to do this", you continue quietly. "Whatever Kronos promised you, whatever he told you-"
"It's not about promises!" Luke snaps.
The sound of anger echoes against the broken stone, but the anger fades quickly, leaving something else behind.
"You don't understand", he says more quietly. "The gods don't care about us, they never have and never will."
You take a small step closer. "But that doesn't mean you have to become the thing you hate."
Luke freezes. Behind him, the presence grows darker.
The voice shakes the room. The shadows behind Luke begin to move, stretching across the temple floor like reaching hands.
Luke's sword lifts slowly, your heart stuttering. But he doesn't swing, he's shaking. You've never seen Luke shake before.
His eyes close for a second, just a second. Then he lowers the sword. Behind him, the shadows recoil violently.
Kronos's voice roars through the temple.
Luke turns slowly. For the first time, he faces the darkness behind him.
"I'm done", he says, the words echoing through the ruined hall.
Kronos's presence explodes with rage. "You swore loyalty!"
Luke laughs, and this time, it sounds real.
"Yeah, turns out I'm bad at keeping promises!", he says.
The shadows surge toward him like a tidal wave. Luke turns back to you, and for the first time all night, he looks like himself again.
"You really shouldn't have followed me", he says softly.
Luke steps closer. Kronos is still raging behind him, the temple shaking with fury, and somehow that doesn't seem to matter anymore.
"Because now I have something to lose."
Before you can respond, Luke grabs your hand.
And for the first time since Kronos found him, Luke runs in the opposite direction of the darkness.
