“It’s hard to disconnect from the worst among society - from police brutality or from the education crisis or the school-to-prison pipeline - when the people affected by it reflect what you look at when you see yourself in the mirror. So I feel like there is that aspect of [my art] - like, I can’t live under a rock. I want to communicate a certain level of value about the perspectives and the stories of African Americans, especially coming from me as an African American man in New Orleans.
