I went to PS 200 in Harlem (150th and 7th) during the 80s. Each of my teachers…Ms. Hazzard, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Shepard, Ms. Chase, even Mr. Kellner (a white man) had classrooms similar to this. You know why? Because they understood that because the country at large wouldn’t, they themselves had to teach black children to have pride in themselves and their history. There is absolutely nothing racist about this teachers approach. To the contrary there needs to be more of this. Particularly in a time when Rudy Giuliani can stand up on national televison and proclaim with confidence, support and applause that “There is no Black America”. I beesech the youth of this time to keep on keeping on. Don’t let the white supremacy represented in the above series of tweets erode the pride you have yourselves. Remember…there was a time when they said , “Black is Beautiful” was racist too. Peace.

This picture of me has been floating around the Internet for the past few years. It’s gotten to the point where my friends, even my students, have come across it and share it with me at least three times a month.

Even though it’s obviously an image of me, I didn’t take the actual photo. Unfortunately it’s now being used to advertise what seems to be snake oil on Facebook because my hair was neither damaged or relaxed when that photo was taken.

I’m not sure what to do in this situation because I don’t feel comfortable that businesses are using “pretty pictures” off the Internet to attract and swindle potential clients but I’m not sure what my rights are in this situation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Louisiana is experiencing the worst flooding in the history of the state.

Over 7,000 people have been rescued and over 5,000 people are in shelters unable to return to their homes. In addition, over 1,000 drivers are stranded on Interstate 12 between Baton Rouge and Slidell, who today received supplies flown in via helicopter. AT&T service has been down throughout the Baton Rouge metro area. One of my former professors told me he’s been living in Louisiana for 44 years, and has never witnessed flooding this severe.

In Denham Springs (about 10 miles from Baton Rouge), the Amite river is currently at 46′ and rising. Flood stage for the river starts at 29′. 

This is bad, really bad. Places that only flood once every 500 years are flooding. Unfortunately, these are also places where people don’t have flood insurance because they don’t live in a flood plain.

There was no warning for this, at least with hurricanes we can see them coming and have time to prepare or evacuate.
