What if Sam doesn't know Bucky can feel with his vibranium arm, so he ~sneaks~ in comforting touches thinking Bucky doesn't notice. Of course Bucky notices, but he isn't about to say anything. That way Sam won't stop and they won't have to discuss it.

Then one evening, Sam notices Bucky is tense/deep in thought and starts rubbing his arm. Bucky relaxes at this, then surprises Sam by reacting. Before Sam can pull his hand away & play it all off, Bucky interlaces their fingers.

The desire to write angsty Sam fic about his fears watching Joaquin learn the fundamentals. His pride in the kid vs his memories of Riley. Remembering when he and Riley were that young and fearless, wanting to prove themselves, to be something bigger, fly higher, dive lower, push every boundary because it’s freedom in the sky. He wants that for Joaquin but he’s struck by Riley’s final fall. He tries to separate them but that image keeps coming. He’s just a little too cautious with Joaquin, and Joaquin is a fast learner. There’s only so long he can keep the kid gloves on. He’s ready and he knows he’s ready. Joaquin reminds him of himself, like he’s passing his own mantle. And he wonders if his pop felt this way when he pushed the limits, drag racing down dirt roads. They’re a lot alike, he and Joaquin. But he’s also like Riley. Handsome, unserious in a way that captivates him. The jokes give him ease. Maybe they both stare just a bit too long. It’s dangerous. In so many ways. Joaquin ain’t Riley. He knows. But he remembers.

And it makes so much sense for Joaquin to be less cautious, a quick learner, eager to go bigger quicker. Sam and Riley were the test pilots for an experimental program; flight suits that had never been created before. The amount of red tape probably meant small incremental steps in training and progress and pushing the limits. Sam and Riley would've been more serious about it (outside of the sheer adrenaline) because the risks were unknown but potentially endless.

But Joaquin? He knows what is capable with the wings because he's watched Sam for years. It's seeing a master of his craft and wanting to replicate that too, be just as good as fast as he can, to prove himself.

And I think that Joaquin learning so quickly and wanting to go higher, further, faster would freak Sam out a lot.

i have been so wicked excited to redo this comic since i first drew it cus this event means so much to Sam as a character n I don't want it to lose its importance

also ive redesigned Riley a bit and thrown in my own imbelishments to the story so it feels new n whole :)
