ALTÈRES ÉGO by Isabelle Bonjean for the Spring 2017 issue of CITIZEN K INTERNATIONAL
In honor of Vore Day tomorrow (8/8), I’ve made a visual novel! It’s got vore and gore and smut, so if you can stomach that kinda thing please click the link below and download the game for free! ^_^
A Harmless Bite
skdfjsdlfj love the weird moral purity shit on the drone season server about noncon I know I’m not that active on discord rn but I’m so glad places like THP/dead dove exist. fandom is exhausting when you have to worry about putting a disclaimer in front of the things you enjoy, to go “I know this is bad, but…” 🙄
This is the 2nd year I’ve had similar issues with polyswap, 2 years ago they made me put (in my opinion) condescending warning tags on my quadruple incest fic, and then this year I was asked to change my prompts to be less horny (ended up completely changing a dubcon sex pollen type prompt) before my application was accepted. Both times I’ve just done what I was asked because it’s not my challenge and I don’t want to make things harder for the people running it, but I don’t know if I’m going to participate again.
yeah that’s. hmm. I remember the tagging thing…
it’s such a tiring and discouraging trend. reminds me of how we lost steam on editing TM for ao3, or how eoykat was discontinued because of these “well actually, in Real Life this would be Bad” kinds of comments
we know! people writing noncon know! you don’t to cut in with how you’d never write noncon yourself when someone is talking about their work
I’m not exactly sure what “weird moral purity shit” you’re referring to. The server AND the swap are designed so that everyone can access the content they want while avoiding the content they don’t. The whole server is NSFW with the “quarantine” channel being opt-in. That’s it. We don’t restrict discussion of potentially heavy topics or dark themes, only ask to respectfully keep them in the opt-in area.
In Drone Season we encourage all participants to request what ever their hearts’ desire within the swap, and we don’t put any limitations or restrictions on what can be asked for kink-wise in the swap itself. We do have rules and guidelines on how to set up your signup in order to best match peoples’ requests to other’s offers while avoiding potential misfires. It’s not a perfect system- Ao3 itself has limitations in the programming that we have to work within- but we do our utmost to thread the needle.
Tagging is common courtesy, and was part of the the fandom culture long before the current rash of moral panic. It’s not performative, it’s there to make sure everyone can have a good time. Triggers aren’t something fancifully made up, and if a mod has asked in the past- either in Polyswap or in Drones Season- to add warning tags to a fill, it’s because they spotted something you didn’t. It’s not a punishment, it’s a safety precaution.
Polyswap has asked it’s participants to put more emphasis on relationships since Drone Season has restarted because that’s what Polyswap is about. Kink is for Drone Season. We’re here for the smut. Polyswap is for polyamorous ships. It’s primarily for the fluff with smut being an okay option in Derse.
I’m not sure what else we could say or do to help set aside any concerns. If you have suggestions on how we could better accommodate you, we welcome and encourage you to come to us and ask.
re: the polyswap thing, it’s your swap and of course you are free to run it to your own vision. I feel that splitting it into derse/prospit sets up the expectation of porn/sfw rather than porn optional if u feel like it but we hope you write fluff/sfw, and from what I hear I wasn’t the only one who was confused. It’s not how I’d run it. But if your vision for the swap is “not horny” then that’s your choice, you’re the one putting all the work in to run it which I appreciate, so like I said, I’m not going to go against it. I may not be the right kind of writer for this particular swap for next time.
re: the tags, I am of course pro tagging and have been involved in fandom for a very long time and do know the ropes. in this situation however, if you click on sth that involves brodave etc, you should already know the dynamic involved. I don’t feel it’s necessary to add a string of tags that highlight how unhealthy the ship is by default, especially when I had intended it to be lighter than usual fare. I felt targeted for writing a “bad” ship, and felt like the tags didnt represent the tone of the piece I wrote which was aimed at shippers who like the ship in the first place. but again! not my exchange, if I participate I will follow the rules. I didn’t complain or fight it then, and I won’t if it happens again. again, this is the price of admission to public run challenges and maybe I’m not the right writer for this one.
finally, I’m not in the drone season server, but by your usage of the word ‘quarantine’ I can think of some advice that may help. I run my own server with such a space, and we have very thorough rules about how to refer to it and to content in it. specifically, words like “garbage, quarantine, trash” etc are exlicitly to be avoided because of the negative connotations. it takes people a lot of courage to share these kinds of kinks with people and being made to feel like diseased quarantined people doesn’t help make a safe or welcome atmosphere in my personal experience as a server admin. I’m not in yours tho so disregard if irrelevant.
@drone-season just kind of seconding what nw said but also oof, I didn't actually intend my little vent post to be a critique of the swap. the comments that bothered me weren't made by mods and I know how hard it can be to shape the culture on a server that's so recently been made.
I also don't speak for the author whose fic was being discussed, but people have different sensitivity levels... yes, it's discouraging enough for some that if the response to "I'm writing x" is "I'm uncomfortable with x" "here's why I don't like x" "I would never read or write x" that they will feel judged, or unwelcome, in that space. I used to mod on nw's server and this is something we tried to be very aware of in order to accommodate everyone.
but yeah. something I’ve been seeing more on ao3 and on homestuck servers is people commenting on fics that are already tagged dub/noncon to tell the author how and why their fic isn't consensual. it’s unnecessary and these comments start piling up to create an overall feeling of wariness.
