Jack was surprised by her suggestion to take the cake back to his room, but he tried not to show it. Scratching the back of his head, Jack shrugged. “My roommate is out for the day doing… something. So, we could go to mine, if You’d like. Doesn’t matter to me either way though.” He mumbled. 

“Yeah,. It’s got everything a person could want– action, adventure, romance, a sad story. It’s honestly one of the best movies ever made.”

Ashlynn nodded and was thankful for Jack’s offering of his room, as now that she thought about it her room wasn’t the cleanest right now with her bed covered with papers and changing the plants she kept. With a smile she reached out to pick up the cake up from the counter, “Sounds like a perfect plan, we’ll light the candles there and watch the movie, a nice birthday. At least I hope it will be for you.” She said, smiling once more at him with hope in her eyes that he was going to have a good birthday, that was her whole goal for the day.

“Oh I agree, totally and completely. I have never met a person who doesn’t love that movie.”  She began as she started moving out of the kitchen area, “Plus who doesn’t love a good hero’s tale?”

“Believe it or not, I’ve been on really quite little dates.” Sure, girls had made eyes at him, and he had his fair share of casual relationships here and there - but dates, romance? Too much time spent being kicked while he was down, then too much time spent worrying about money, then too much time spent learning how to not get the shit kicked out of him. Grabbing the scooter by the handles, Garrett walked it to one of the manned parking stations, passing his debit card to the person behind the counter. “Of course. I think we all need a bit of unpredictability in our lives. Who knows what we’re going to stumble upon on the island?” he said, with a bit of exaggerated mystery, as if they were embarking on some sort of mystical journey. Maybe they were. “I try. C’mon, ferry.” He gestured with his phone, having opened up to the code to be scanned that had been sent to his email when he booked them their tickets. Absentmindedly - or at least, he pretended to have done it absentmindedly - Garrett took her hand in his, leading her towards the pier.

“What? I would have thought that maybe you would have had quite a few dates before. But then again, I don’t know you very well other than your boxing and how dang good you are at planning dates.” She said, following after Garrett as he parked the Vespa. “Maybe during the boat ride you’ll tell me more about you, yeah?” There was still that air of mystery to who Garrett was, and she was interested because she knew that he was more than just a big guy who boxed and rode an adorable little scooter. Watching him she wondered to herself about what he could have gotten up to as a youth and as she thought, she started spacing out and getting lost in her own little world.

Ashlynn was pulled back into the real world when Garrett took her hand and lead her towards the pier, when it finally dawned on her that he was holding her hand she smiled widely and moved faster to keep up with him “So, I hope you’re good at mini-golf cause I rock at it.”

“Nah, it makes sense. People like hearing about what they don’t have.” Jack said as he stuck the candles into his cake. “But, I pretty much grew up an only child.”

Glancing over at Ashlynn, he folded his arms across his chest. Forrest Gump was a classic, but he wasn’t a huge fan of military movies… And Matilda was just too close to home. Weird little kid from a shitty home develops crazy powers? Nope, he didn’t want to watch that.

“How about Princess Bride? I haven’t seen that movie in so long.”

Ashlynn thought for a moment at the statement, put off a bit by it but found she couldn’t disagree with it as she remembered back to when all she wanted to hear were those stories of what wasn’t for her. “Yeah I suppose so, but more importantly before we go lighting your cake lets take it back to a room. Yours or mine?” She said, changing the subject to something else with what she hoped wasn’t too obvious of a switch. Dwelling in the past was one of  her least favorite things to do and now wasn’t the time with it being Jack’s birthday and all.

“Princess Bride sounds awesome, always a classic with a lot of good laughs. I think it’s still on Netflix too so thats a plus!”

Glancing down at the cake, Jack was surprised to see Ashlynn had already finished. And that it looked pretty damn good. Huh. Clearing his throat, he nodded.

“Yeah. I’ve got two older siblings, Mike and Lindsey. They’re both… older than me. Lindsey’s got two boys. Cute kids. I think Jesse turns 6 come December.” He said, a bit sheepish. Was it weird that he was already an uncle? Or that his siblings were so much older than him? Jeez…

“Uh… I usually watch something funny. But, did you have any ideas? I’m a fan of pretty much anything.” Jack said.

Making a mental note of Jack’s siblings and nephews, Ashlynn nodded a bit as she listened. "That’s awesome, I’m an only child so it’s always nice to hear people talk about their siblings if that makes sense? I dunno, it’s a little silly.” She said with a shrug.

“Um, I’m honestly not the most well versed in media, or pop culture? I know some cool movies but not a lot. Um, Forrest Gump, Matilda, or The Princess Bride are the three I can think of right away. There’s The School of Rock, ya know the one with Jack Black?”

Cool relief washed over the man’s features as he liberated his head from the confines of the scooter helmet. No matter how cute it looked, those things were always stuffy - which he supposed meant that they served their function. Squinting his eyes at the sun’s rays that reflected itself off the glimmering surface of the channel, Garrett noted that the ferry just happened to be pulling into harbour - right on time, according to a quick check on that cheap Casio watch he always had strapped around his right wrist. “I figured, girl like you, ought to have gone on many dates, right?” started Garrett rhetorically, the same old easygoing smile resting on his lips as he paused, before continuing, “So I wanted to do something different, instead of like just … lunch and movies?” Chuckling, Garrett offered her a hand. “Come on, we’ve got a boat to catch, unless you wanna spend the next half hour being hassled by peddlers trying to sell you knock-off Ray-Bans.”

Ashlynn couldn’t help but roll her eyes yet smile fondly at him “Sure I’m been on a number of dates, but handsome nice guy like you must have been on just as many.” Reaching her hand out to take Garrett’s in her own, she let him lead her off the scooter. Before he could take her far she put her helmet down on the seat where she as sitting just a moment ago. “Not at all, actually going on an adventure sounds so much more fun than that.” She said as she looked around the docks, taking in the hustle and bustle of it all. It wasn’t as if she wasn’t used to the city life, but it was a much different city feel than the feel from home. “Lunch and a movie are nice but this, I can tell you put thought and effort into this. Its sweet of you.” She said, bumping his shoulder-well more arm from their height difference- playfully.

“Oh, uh, I woke up early this morning. Bought the ingredients a couple days ago and made it from scratch. Had to stick it in the fridge so I could frost it.” Jack mumbled. Baking wasn’t exactly a manly hobby. But, dammit, it was something he liked doing. And people generally appreciated baked goods… right?

“Uh…” He thought for a minute. He honestly couldn’t remember the last time he’d done anything special for his birthday. His dad hated being reminded of anything to do with Jack, so he usually arranged for a “business trip” to take him out of town. And his mom, she’d tried when he was little, but he’d never liked birthday parties.

“It’s been pretty much this for the last few years. Cake and movie.” He said and grinned as he remembered the letter he’d gotten this morning. “My sister sends me a birthday card, which is nice. Her kids sign it too and it’s real sweet.”

With a final flourish of the frosting bag on the cake she finished frosting the cake, standing up a bit straighter and looking over the cake to make sure it was good she gave a little nod of approval. Putting the bag down on the counter she turned back to him to give all her attention to listening to him, it was the least she could do. Seeing him smile widely she couldn’t help but smile back at him. “That is really nice of her and her kids. I didn’t know you had a sister.” She said tilting her head to side and trying not to frown as now that she thought about it she knew almost nothing about him other than seeing his photography and that he wasn’t the most talkative guy. Just thinking about it she felt bad, but also determined to get to know him more. 

Bringing herself out of her thoughts she clapped her hands together and smiled widely at Jack “So movie wise, what were you thinking of? A comedy? Horror? Or do you have a movie thats like your go to for your birthday?”

Startled by how determined Ashlynn was, he wordlessly handed her the frosting bag. There was no point in trying to argue with her and… besides, why would he want to? He’d have to be nuts to say that spending his birthday alone was how he wanted it. It was just what he’d expected.

“Thanks, Ashlynn…“ Jack mumbled, embarrassed. Jeez, now she knew how pathetic he was, celebrating his birthday by himself. “Hope you don’t mind German Chocolate. It’s kinda my favorite.”

Ashlynn began working on finishing frosting with little little problem, sure it had been a while since she had done any baking but she quickly got the hang of it once again. “No way, German Chocolate is awesome. Plus how could I argue when you’ve already made the cake. When did you do this anyways?” She asked, drawing little shapes with the frosting just for the heck of it and to make it look a little more festive and fun.

She wasn’t quite sure how to breach the subject of him spending his birthday alone, but was afraid of opening that whole can of worms when things were going pretty okay with him. Making up her mind she decided to not to talk about it until they were were not in a common area. “So, a cake and movies. Anything else you like to do for your birthday?”

“No, don’t worry about. Really.” Jack said, shaking his head. “I mean, no one knows it’s my birthday. I was just gonna make a cake and watch cruddy movies, that’s all.”

Taken aback by her sudden willingness to help, Jack shifted helplessly. “Y-you don’t have to. I’ve got it covered.” He said, gesturing to the mostly unfrosted cake.

Ashlynn couldn’t believe it and began shaking her head a bit. “Make your own cake, and cruddy movies,” She mumbled to herself  incredulously. “No, that’s no way to spend a birthday. First I’m going to finish this cake with you and then if anything we’re going to watch cruddy movies together.”

“You’re right, I don’t have have to but I want to. No one should have to make their own birthday cake so I’m going to help you, so be quiet Jack and let me.” She said before reaching out to take the frosting bag from him.

“Er, I was just baking.” Jack said sheepishly, fidgeting with the hem of his sleeve as he spoke. Jeez, this was a disaster.

“No, it’s not for a party. I’m not really into that sorta thing.“ He said and sighed. There was no point in trying to hide it. Stepping aside, he tilted his head towards the candles and the frosting. “I was just making a cake. For… my birthday. Stupid, I know.”

Ashlynn let out a small gasp as a huge smile spread across her face at the news that it was his birthday, “Oh my gosh, happy birthday Jack! That’s not stupid at all, I just feel bad I didn’t know before hand. I would have gotten you something or made you a cake so you didn’t have to make your own.” She really did feel bad that he had to do so, yeah it looked pretty good but a person shouldn’t have to make their own birthday cake.

“You know what, you aren’t gonna finish this alone. Scooch over, I’m going to help you out. It’s the least I can do for your birthday!”

Jack rubbed the back of his head as Ashlynn spoke, doing his best to hide the piping bag and birthday candles behind him. God, this was embarrassing. He should have just bought a cake from the shop.

“No, it’s uh, nothing. You’re good.” Jack said folding his arms across his chest. “It’s just a cake.”

Ashlynn was a little surprised about the fact that Jack had a cake behind him as that sure wasn’t what she was expecting from him.  

 “A cake? What are you doing with a cake?” She asked, noticing his folded arms and nervousness she started becoming more and more curious about the whole cake situation. “Could this be the start of a party maybe? That’s surprising for you, but kinda awesome.”

Jack pulled out his cake from the fridge where it had been chilling and set it down on the counter of the communal kitchen. Grabbing the frosting bag, he set about piping the chocolate frosting on top of the cake. Humming Happy Birthday to himself, he was so focused on what he was doing that he didn’t even notice the other student enter the kitchen until the door slammed shut.

“Jesus!” Jack swore, jumping. Dammit. He fucked up the frosting… “What’s uh, what’s up?” He asked, trying not to let his irritation show.

Ashlynn had been studying for a few hours and was getting hungry and tired so she had headed into the common area towards the kitchen, thinking of getting herself some yogurt with granola when she noticed Jack hanging around the kitchen doing something but she couldn’t quite see it so she stepped a little closer to see what he was doing but as soon as she did so the door closed behind her quite loudly.

“Oh gosh I’m sorry if I scared you, Jack. Nothing, I was just trying to get something to eat,” She said sheepishly. “Were you working on something important? I hope it didn’t get messed up.”

“Bit of both, mostly sketch since it’s easier to transport and a lot less expensive. But I’ve taken up painting for class, thought it’d be interesting to try and it’s a good way to get some colors into my life, y’know? It was all pretty much black and white, different shades of gray before ESU.” Benji pressed the blunt to his lips and lazily inhaled, this time actually making the effort to taste the blueberry. He exhaled thoughtfully, “’s there a little bit, I s’pose. Definitely different, I’m not the best for picking apart subtle differences.” 

Figuring he was hogging it, he passed it back to Ashlynn. “God, please start a band with life science students, I need to see this. Don’t worry I’ve been known to start talking crap occasionally. Now I’m just disappointed there’s no life science band.”

Ashlynn hummed and closed her eyes, just kinda feeling the whole experience and enjoying this nice down time and getting to know someone new. She was definitely a people person and loved getting to know people, plus the weed sure was helping to mellow her out as well. “Well I think that’s awesome, I’m sure you’re super awesome at your art. Do you have any around here?” She asked, opening her eyes back up to look around the room and then back to Benji. “Nah its cool, sometimes people don’t always taste it; it’s kinda just a fun extra to the whole you know, smoking weed thing.”

Ashlynn reached out to take the blunt back from him, and took a long drag. Before she could finish she let out a laugh at the thought of life science students being in a band together, and started to cough on the smoke. Once she had recovered a bit from the cough she was still grinning. “It should be a thing, I might have to start working on that. It would totally be a band about sciences. Like a Bill Nye situation but with music.”

☮- How much your muse worries about appearance?

Ashlynn knows she’s pretty, she’s been told by her family growing up, past boyfriends and other people in her life but she doesn’t worry about it other than wanting to dress nicely. 

The only times she ever worries about her appearance is when she’s out for a hike and knows she covered in dirt and things people don’t like  have in stores or other public places so she makes sure to have extra clothes with her or when she knows she has to make a nice impression for like a job interview or a family dinner. Then she worries.

Ashlynn will eat just about any food put in front of her but her absolute favorite is would have to be a burrito from a taco truck, it just reminds her of back home and they’re just so good that she can’t help loving it, even though it might not be the healthiest food. She also can never pass up a good salad like, ever. If there salad she’s gonna have it.
