does it come with any health problems? Like I know you don’t HAVE to get cosmetic surgery, but is there anything health related that you wouldn’t have to do if you weren’t intersex?

for me personally, I have to take hormones (specifically progesterone) to balance out some of my emotional symptoms (depression, anxiety) but otherwise, no. I know there are people more prone to urinary tract infections with some variations, or people that have to deal with pain related to endometriosis/PCOS like symptoms. I also know that some hormone differences can lead to slightly higher cancer risks. It heavily depends on the variation. Some have less health problems correlated (like mine), and others have much more, such as specific chromosomal variations which can be fatal (XXXX, XXXXY) and some have a higher predisposition to learning disabilities (XXX, XYY)

I'm not too educated on intersex biology, since I haven't met anyone born intersex and it was taught to me. I hope it's not offensive, but I'm curious if both sexual organs are functioning? And like... Where does the urethra connect to?

it really depends! There are no cases in which anyone has been born with both the capacity to impregnate and be impregnated. Some people are born with both ovarian and testicular tissue ,or female externally and male internally or vice versa. Essentially, in the womb, everybody starts with a vagina. In men, it fuses. So for example the clitoris is the direct female counterpart to a penis in a man. If you are interested you can do more research on embryotic development. Essentially, sometimes that fusion or development isn't typical. Either it happens partially, or no genitals develop at all. (Both of these are usually due to hormones in the womb.) The urethera tends to form separately from the sex organs, and it connects from the bladder to somewhere outside of the body. (Typically the end of the penis/above the vaginal opening but that can vary.) A plethora of things can ne different from person to person. If you want more details you can look at interACT's glosaary of intersex variations. Other variations can be purely hormonal or chromosomal, which, while physically things look typical, other sex traits (breasts, body hair etc) can be different. Other times people have chromosomal variations (XO, XXY, XXYY, etc.)

Over 90% of parents of visibly intersex children opt for cosmetic surgery on their infants.

The ones that don't experience medical violence then, likely experience it as a teenager.

I didn't.

I am very rare in that I did not experience medical violence.

Why? Because I learned what intersexuality was as a young age, and I actively fought against what doctors wanted to do to me. All the way down to legal research on what medical care minors can be forced into. I remember walking into that doctor's appointment with the state law written down that proved that if I did not consent they could not do surgery.

That is why intersex activism is important. It saved me and it will save more.
