that reflect on this issue’s theme: folktales. Specifically, we’re looking for explorations of folktales, myths, and religious scenes that illuminate possibilities for becoming. If a story has traditionally been used against us to prescribe our relationships and roles in society, how can we find rebellious and redemptive possibilities in it? If you had a say, how would this story be told? How does retelling make us who we are?

For this issue, we would prefer that you have a personal connection with the tradition from which you draw the material for your submission.

We accept submissions that are not written in English and will not require you to translate for publication. For more details, look at our submission guidelines or contact us directly.

I marched because progressive American women need to know intersectionality is not just about the issues at home, but about how we build solidarity across nations. what often gets completely elided is the fact that the chinese diaspora refers mainly to the diaspora of the han people. “chinese,” in other words, is a national marker passing as an ethnic, cultural, and linguistic marker, since there are altogether fifty-six official ethnicities in china and there are far more diverse languages and dialects spoken across the nation. the chinese language, as it is generally assumed and understood, is nothing but the standardized language imposed by the state, that is, the language of the han, the hanyu; the chinese, as we know them, are largely limited to the han, and chinese culture refers mainly to the culture of the han. in short, “chinese” functions as a category of ethnicity only to the extent that it designates the han, excluding all the other ethnicities, languages, and cultures. the term ethnic chinese is therefore a serious misnomer, since chineseness is not an ethnicity but many ethnicities.

A bilingual comic about the daily life of a Chinese-Canadian family, with just a dash of magic!

I’m very excited to announce this project that Nao and I have been working on with Project 40 Collective! It’s my first big comic, and the story explores topics that are very dear to our hearts, that we hope will resonate with other Asian diaspora. The characters speak in a mix of both English and Chinese - but, without giving away too much, the comic is designed to be accessible to people of varying comfort levels with English and Chinese. :> So even if you’re not a Chinese speaker, or if you’re a bit wobbly with written Chinese (we get it), you should stay tuned!

I simply thought I would never have severe anxiety in my life because although I was exposed to it from a very young age, I was raised to believe that the individuals with mental health problems were simply the “bad apples” or weak people that we shunned in their moment of need. No one in my family or my community introduced me to the concept that mental health problems could affect any of us one day. It was never something that openly discussed so I was at a loss when trying to make sense of what was happening. I learned the hard way that mental illness does not discriminate, and its impact on the South Asian communities is as prevalent as it is in any other community. Currently in the UK it’s estimated that about a quarter of the population will experience a form of mental health problem in the course of a given year with anxiety and depression being the most common.

The different legal systems under which Israelis and Palestinians are tried apply to children as well. As +972 has consistently documented, Palestinian children arrested by the Israeli army are treated by the military court system as “potential terrorists.” The visual below demonstrates what would happen should two 12-year-old boys, one Israeli and one Palestinian, get arrested for fighting. One would swiftly be brought before a judge, given access to a lawyer, tried and spared jail time. The other could face two years in jail without trial.

South Asian Mental Health and Well-being Research

Hey yall so, My friend Samiha, a South Asian friend of mine  who goes to the University of Maryland in partnership with the Psychology department is leading a study on South Asian mental health & well-being. Its one of the first studies of its kind, And to get Good results and hopefully more research into this area its needs a fairly large sample size, roughly 300 people though definelty the more the merrier. 

The target population for this study is South Asian (aka “desi” - Bengali, Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, etc.) young adults, from 18-25 years old

If you fit into that category please take the survey! if not please share it with your friends! Mental health studies for POC isn’t extremely common and the more that get approved and published, the better for everybody (esp the respective communities cause the better we understand it the better we can begin to heal)

Now the survey is about 15 min long so definitely put aside a little time to take it and be able to finish.

There’s not much that ties the Asiam community (if it can be called that) together. Our foundational act of transnational, transethnic solidarity happened over thirty years ago, and since then the moniker of Asian American has been used inaccurately as a cultural, rather than a political statement. But in reality, there is very little that ties Asian Americans together save for our ethnic origins in the continent of Asia. We have widely varying interests, widely varying settlement histories, widely varying dynamics with the society we live in. But our one commonality––the reason I set the theme for our first ever issue as travel––is displacement. Someone, somewhere along the line decided to move across an ocean. It could be you, your parent, or your great great great grandparent six generations back. But this is the thing that we hold in common. (from the Editor’s Note)

Himalayan Girls Club is a starting feminist group, with a special focus on Nepali girls & women in the diaspora. We are organizing to build political consciousness through shared experience and critical dialogue, following similar approaches by other feminists of color. Due to the lack of options otherwise, we feel it is necessary to begin with an online community. At this moment, we want to examine and interrogate the specificities of being young Nepali women in the midst of a hetero-patriarchal world.

Our first publication will shine a creative light to the politics of home, belonging, and what it means (or doesn’t mean) to be an “independent” Nepali girl. In what ways do we navigate boundaries, choices, desires & dreams in both private and public areas (home, community, friends and relationships, school/academics, etc.)? Do we have free will now that we’ve grown up or live in a “western” society? Or are we still constrained by a unique set of limitations and expectations – if so, how?

This is a collection that emphasizes storytelling and analysis directly from our own experiences. Feel free to use the above options, or explore any other sort of outlet you have in mind as well. It’s all up to you!
