"For the last 15 years, The Eastside Café has been an autonomous collective that’s been working towards building self-determination and providing free self-empowerment services. For the last 3 years, we’ve been working towards creating a feasible deal to purchase our building due to gentrification. This past week we were made aware that there was already a purchase deal in the works for the building. On Thursday, May 4th, at 10am, we confronted that buyer and negotiated a 10-day interruption of a sale. This sale would compromise our occupancy and the wellbeing of our community severely. We have 8 days, Sunday, May 13th, to fundraise $180,000 to get the buyer to back out and began the acquisition process with the donations we’ll be receiving. We the people from Eastside Café, community residents of El Sereno, Artists, Activists, Professors, students, parents, grandparents and so on are here today, to humbly ask you for your financial support to help us purchase the building that sits on the corner of Maycrest and Huntington Dr. in El Sereno, North East Los Angeles. Your contribution will go directly towards the acquisition of the building that will continue to be a thriving space and sanctuary for our rooted communities. The time is now to start buying land for ourselves. Thank you!" https://www.gofundme.com/saveeastsidecafe https://www.gofundme.com/saveeastsidecafe https://www.gofundme.com/saveeastsidecafe
Hundreds march in Flint to commemorate Bloody Sunday and raise awareness of water crisis
"Bottom line, human lives matter," Edwards said. "This is what it is all about. Everybody from every cultural background here. They are here because this is important to them. They are not just speaking words, they are backing it up with their actions."Last month, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission issued a hard-hitting report that called the public health catastrophe in Flint "a complete failure of government" and concluded that Flint residents "have been subjected to unprecedented harm and hardship, much of it caused by structural and systemic discrimination and racism."
Now, the state says the water quality in Flint meets the requirements of the federal Lead and Copper Rule and Safe Drinking Water Act and is "comparable" to the water quality in other municipalities around the state and the nation. More than $41 million in state-funded water relief credits has been applied to city water bills from April 2014 through February 2017, according to the state, and another $17.8 million toward payments to the Great Lakes Water Authority. But many residents don't believe those reports and say that the contamination levels in some parts of the city remain higher than in others. "I am still drinking bottled water," Edwards said. "Until we get some type of assurance that it is safe to drink, you know, you don’t want to take any chances."
An 83-year-old Korean woman was assaulted in Koreatown on Wednesday afternoon in an attack that became the subject of a viral social media post, which said the assailant had yelled “white power” before fleeing.
“Over the past year, most of these funds you will see on the various websites have already exhausted the legal aid that they have raised. That is why we are even in the position we are in today where the pipeline construction has been halted.
Let’s make sure that they have EVERYTHING they need to fight off the Dakota Access Pipeline. Let’s make sure they have every type of attorney they need. Let’s make sure that they have the funds to fight this battle on the front lines and in the court room.
They are counting on you. Give your best gift today, please. And encourage everybody you know to join you.”

Isidro Baldenegro Lopez, an award-winning Indigenous environmental activist who fought against deforestation in Mexico, was assassinated last weekend, Proceso reports. Baldenegro, the 2005 recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize for North America, was found dead outside a relative’s house in Chihuahua. Witnesses claim the murder suspects are linked with known assassins of other Indigenous environmental activists in the region. Baldenegro will be buried in Coloradas de la Virgen, the land belonging to his native Tarahumara community, which he and his family defended for decades.
