Historia de la Península Coreana: Primera parte

LA ANTIGUA EDAD DE PIEDRA (Paleolítico)

El ser humano llegó a la Península Coreana por Manchuria, o por el Mar Amarillo (en aquel tiempo, de poca profundidad) hace unos 500 000 o 400 000 años. Seguramente venía desde el actual territorio de China; esto se teorizó a partir del descubrimiento del esqueleto de un Homo erectus cerca de Beijing (el Hombre de Pekín). Es también probable que el acceso del ser humano a Corea se dió por medio de los puentes de tierra que existían entre la península y japón, y entre las actuales islas de Hokkaido y Sakhalin hacia Siberia.

La información que se tiene de los primeros pobladores coreanos proviene de distintos sitios arqueológicos: 

Komunmoru: En la cueva de piedra caliza en Komunmoru (al sur de Pyongyang), se encontraron herramientas de piedra (hachas y raspadores), huesos de varios animales (rinoceronte, mono, visón, caballo, elefante, tigre y oso), así como de un tipo de caballo que se extinguió después del Pleistoceno medio (periódo geológico correspondiente al paleolítico).  

Chongoki-ri: En el sitio de Chongoki-ri se encontraron hachas de mano y restos habitacionales de hace unos 270 000 aproximadamente.

Daehyun-dong y Turubong: Los restos humanos (dientes y huesos) de Daehyun-dong (cerca de Pyongyang) y Turubong (al sur de la península) están fechados en la etapa media de la Edad de Piedra (paleolítico). En Turubong, además, hay una cueva que contenía, también una hoguera con carbón hecha de pino, arce y aliso, así como huevos de venado labrados con representaciones de ese animal, por lo que los historiadores coreanos infieren que era venerado por los habitantes de ese sitio. 

Suyanggae: En el sureste de la península, en el sitio de Suyanggae, se descubrieron hachas de mano, cuchillos rectangulares, raspaderas, puntas espigadas y buriles hechos de cuarcita, esquito, riolita y obsidiana, así como restos de piel animal y madera de camelia, pino y arce. Ese sitio está fechado en la última etapa glacial geológica, en la última mitad del la Edad de Piedra.

Sockchang-ri: Este sitio, en el sudoeste, incluye un área habitacional delimitada por dos hileras de piedra, con un hogar y cinco orificios para postes, lo cual sugiere que ahí residían diez personas; empleaban obsidiana y cuarzo para elaborar herramientas y trabajaban el cuero y el hueso. 

Con todas las evidencias encontradas en los sitios arqueológicos mencionados, los historiadores deducen que los primeros pobladores fueron grupos nómadas paleo - siberianos, aunque no se puede decir que los coreanos actuales sean sus descendientes étnicos. Los primeros pobladores habitaban en cuevas como en construcciones a nivel del suelo, que rodeaban con muros, y usaban el fuego para calentarse y cocinar. Vivían de la recolección de frutos y raíces, asó como de la casa y la pesca. Tenían un estilo de vida comunal, y recurrían a la magia para pedir éxito en las cacerías; sin embargo, no existen evidencias concretas que sustenten esta práctica.

El hombre que se tragó un fantasma en una taza de té

Hace doscientos veinte años, el señor Makagawa Sado, estando de viaje para hacer una visita de año nuevo, se detuvo unos minutos con su séquito en un establecimiento de Hakusan donde se servía té. Hakusan es un barrio de Yedo, en el distrito de Hongo. En tanto que los demás descansaban, uno de los servidores del magnate, Sikinaï, sintiendo una sed ardiente, se sirvió una gran taza de té. 

Iba a posar los labios en la taza, cuando vio en la infusión verde y límpida reflejada la imagen de una persona extraña. Sorprendido miró a su alrededor para ver si había alguien. No había nadie. El rostro que se reflejaba en el líquido era, a juzgar por su peinado, el de un joven samurái. Era singularmente claro, muy bello, de una naturaleza delicada y femenina. La imagen parecía viva; sus ojos y sus labios se movían. Azorado ante esta aparición misteriosa, Sikinaï arrojó el té y se puso a observar cuidadosamente el recipiente. Era un cubilete sencillo, sin ornamento alguno.

Sikinaí pidió más té, lo vertió en el cubilete, y al llenarlo, se manifestó de nuevo la extraña forma, esta vez con una sonrisa burlona. Pero Sikinaï no dejó que lo dominara el miedo.

- Seas quién seas - murmuró - no te reirás de mi mucho tiempo -. Se bebió el té, con la imagen reflejada en él, en seguida se fue, preguntándose si se había tragado un fantasma.

Esa noche, estaba de guardia en el palacio del señor de Nakagawa; cuando de repente, entrada la madrugada, Sikinaï se sorprendió al ver penetrar silenciosamente a un extranjero en la antecámara. El extranjero era un joven samurái, suntuosamente vestido; se adelantó y fue a sentarse frente a Sikinaï, lo saludó con una ligera inclinación de cabeza y le dijo en voz baja pero penetrante: “Soy Shikibu-Heinai, esta mañana te he visto por primera vez, ¿no me reconoces?”. Maravillado, Sikinaï reconoció el rostro siniestro y bello que ese mismo día había visto y bebido… La aparición de la taza de té. El desconocido sonreía tal cual le había sonreído el fantasma. 

- No te conozco - contestó Sikinaï irritado, pero dueño de sí. - ¿Puedes decirme como te introduciste hasta aquí? -. 

- Ah, ¿no me conoces? Sin embargo, esta mañana te permitiste ofenderme mortalmente.- Exclamó el extranjero. 

Sikinaï asió el tantō (arma corta) que llevaba en la cintura y en un salto repentino hirió al desconocido en la garganta; pero parecía que la hoja sólo había cortado el aire. En el mismo momento, sin hacer ruido, el hombre dio un brinco de costado hacia la pared, que atravesó, sin dejar rastro alguno. Había pasado como la bujía a través del papel del farolillo.

Cuando Sikinaï dio cuenta de lo que había acontecido, sus compañeros quedaron intrigados y estupefactos. A la hora que él decía no habían visto entrar ni salir a nadie. Además, nunca ninguno de los guardias ni de los servidores del señor de Nakagawa había oído hablar de Shikibu Heinai.

La noche siguiente Sikinaï no estaba de guardia, se quedó en casa de sus padres. Era bastante tarde cuando un sirviente vino a anunciarle que algunos extranjeros deseaban hablarle. Tomó un sable y se encaminó a la puerta de su casa; había allí tres hombres armados, al parecer vasallos. A su llegada se inclinaron con respeto; después de lo cual uno de ellos tomó la palabra:

“He aquí nuestros nombres: Matsuoka Bungo, Tsuchibosi Bunfo y Okomura Heiroku. Pertenecemos a la casa del noble Shikibu Heinai. Anoche, nuestro señor te honró con su visita, y durante ella lo heriste de un sablazo. Está gravemente herido; hemos tenido que llevarlo a las fuentes termales, donde se haya su curación. El sexto día del mes entrante volverá. Entonces recibirás la justa retribución del ultraje que le has hecho”. 

Sin esperar más, Sikinaï, sable en mano, comenzó a atacar a los mensajeros. Pero los tres hombres se precipitaron hacia la pared más próxima, remontándose como las sombras…

I saw everyone on twitter tearing Emma Watson apart for saying she’s self - partnered instead of single and decided to watch her interview for British Vogue to know what the hell was she trying to say with that. I was very surprised to find a 30 minute video in which amongst other things she talks about the following:

She felt undeserving when she was appointed as UN Women goodwill ambassador and sought out Gloria Steinem to learn about feminist activism.

She thinks the criticism she received for being a white feminist was useful because it made her educate herself.

She says there’s a desperate need to reform the education system in the UK to change the way they are taught the history of how Britain has been involved in foreign affairs and how they profited from slavery.

She felt anxious about approaching 30 because there’s a lot of pressure to have a husband and a baby by then and she’s still figuring her life out.

She was so young when she was casted in Harry Potter that she doesn’t remember much of her life before it and she went to therapy to deal with her issues with fame. She used to feel very guilty for being unhappy because she thought she should enjoy fame more.

The interviewer is a transgender woman and they discuss transgender issues for a while. Emma is in regular contact with a trans child which makes the topic of trans rights emotional for her because she’s very anxious for this kid’s safety.

She talks about her role as Meg March in the new Little Women movie and defends that unlike what many people say choosing to be a wife and a mother doesn’t make Meg a less feminist character and quotes a line from the movie, “Just because my dreams are different than yours it doesn’t mean they are unimportant.”  

She wishes more people would realize she’s not Hermione Granger but also understands why they want to see that in her because Hermione is a symbol for her too.

She used to think she could never be happy without a partner and now that she has learnt to navigate that better and is genuinely happy single she’s started to think of herself as self - partnered in contrast to the time when she thought of herself as single = lonely.

Every media outlet decided to focus in an out of context quote from the three minutes she talked about her dating life when the actual interview had a lot of depth and way more important things were discussed. I’m sad and angry but not surprised.

it is my professional opinion that teaching young musicians, especially string players, to play mainstream music like rock, pop, musical theatre, country, jazz, and film is just as important as teaching them to play symphonies, concertos, and sonatas. Learning to play a cello arrangement of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” was just as influential in my musical development as learning a Bach suite.

Jazz teaches improvisation skills, and introduces students to extended chords and harmonies. It also uses swing eighth rhythms, which is challenging to players who are used to straight eights in classical music.

Rock and pop music use lots of syncopation and teaches how to feel the offbeat and how use this feeling to lock-in rhythmically with the other players. These genres also influence the music of musical theatre.

Country has it’s roots in the music of Appalachian fiddle music, which uses techniques that classical violinists don’t use.

Not to mention, the racial disparity between the music of classical Western tradition and popular music from the 20th century makes it blantantly obvious that we’re supposed to believe that European art music is superior to other types of music. How can we fairly say that Bach is one of, if not the greatest composer who ever lived when the likes of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and even Michael Jackson have all changed the game? Bach’s music all sounds like it wants to sell me the new Nissan Altima, but sure, he’s the musical genius.

I’ve noticed that band programs don’t have this culture of elitism as much as orchestra programs do. Most schools in the US have a marching band program, and the music they play is popular music. the show for this season at my school was Beach Boys, and next year’s is 80s. Band kids also have the option of joining jazz band, and still get to learn classical repertoire in concert band.

Orchestra, on the other hand, has a reputation for being full of pretentious, classically trained since birth, uppity snobs who look down upon music of the masses. The only “real” music is music from dead European guys who lived between 1650-1900. But you know what? The music that got us the most excited and most interested in playing was always arrangements of popular music.

Orchestra kids are so hungry for new and exciting music. I played Mozart’s Symphony 25 every goddamn year in high school. By senior year I could play it memorized. I was so tired of playing the same old shit, and I know kids today are too. We don’t get the same opportunity to be exposed to new music like band kids. I got told that wanting to play musical theatre was “an unrealistic career” and to “not waste my time trying” by my high school orchestra director. He also said that learning to play the Beatles’ on my cello was “not worthy of performance, unprofessional, and a waste of talent.” This kind of condescension of popular music is rampant in orchestra culture.

We need to end this dichotomy between classical music and popular music. both are good, both can teach students the skills they need to be proficient on their instruments. Teaching one without teaching the other does not a well-rounded musician make.
