This was originally a failed watercolor painting from about a year ago, but I found it after cleaning out my flat file and decided to give it another shot and see if I could salvage it.

Graphite study in my crescent rendr sketchbook. The main goal was to develop a smooth rendering and edgework in the figure.

The Gardener and her crop, 18x24 mixed media on illustration board “No one is really sure who The Gardener is or where she came from. Some believe that she’s an ancient forest sprite, others think she was a warrior who lost her way and found madness. Whatever her reason might be, should you find yourself deep within the Shadowed Garden you might find yourself part of her growing crop. Tread carefully, traveler.”

WIP of my next Shadowed Garden piece, The Gardener and Her Crop.  It’s based on my ink drawing by the same name from a year and a half ago, I figured it deserved being upscaled into a proper painting.  At the moment most of the tonal colors have been laid down as a base, so pretty sure it’ll be time to do a pass on the lights before revisiting shadows and tying things together.

Quick sketch studies from reference - a lot of these are working to capture the gesture and light/shadow patterns that make up the figure.  You can see these most clearly in the figure work, since each of those were about 5 minutes each and didn’t afford time for tiny details.

Back at posting for the new year, I’ve got a couple bits from the backlog to post.  Here’s a life drawing session from last night, conte on craft paper.
