Fair warning, I'm about to indulge in some full-on, sweary haterism. As a Scottish trans person, I have many serious reasons to loathe Harry fucking Potter with every ounce of my being. But aside from the obvious stuff, I want to talk about the sheer aggravation of seeing this one fucking IP take over, and come to define, the way people outside the UK see and understand the UK.

The UK is not “just like Harry Potter”. HP took things that absolutely already existed in the UK - entirely independently of this franchise - and dialled the insufferable tweeness and self-conscious, affected “Britishness” up to eleven, and now far too many people have allowed this one fucking franchise to cloud their entire imagining of this country.

“Wow, this old castle is just like something out of Harry Potter!” No. It's just an old castle. The UK is covered in those.

“This fancy old dining hall in a historic building is just like Harry Potter!” See above.

“Wow, you studied at this prestigious old university? That must have been just like being in Harry Potter!” No, in fact, it wasn't. The UK's ancient universities (of which we have six) have been around for hundreds upon hundreds of years. Hundreds of years before a certain author was even born. They have nothing to do with fucking Harry Potter.

“I can't wait to visit the UK. It'll be just like stepping into Harry Potter.” Oh my god we are a real country that exists entirely separately from this fucking IP. We are not anyone's fairytale. Take a look at a decaying 1960s tower block in one of our many areas of desperate urban deprivation and then tell me it's “just like Harry Potter”.

What this franchise did is take a load of things that already existed in the UK (amazing old castles, brilliantly preserved historic sites, romantic old cobblestone streets, boarding schools, school “houses”, ancient institutions, etc) and brand them with fucking HP. So now millions of people who have never set foot in the UK see these things and go “wow! Harry Potter!” and associate them all with this franchise rather than seeing them as just... the way the UK is.

There are lots of factors that go into making all this quite so blood-boiling:

the existing tendency of some people to view other countries as theme parks built for their entertainment rather than, you know, fully functioning societies that do not exist (and should not exist) purely for the gratification of tourists, and the way that this encourages people to view the UK less as an actual country and more as an extension of the fucking HP brand;

the fact that so many legitimately cool things about this island (like the really old buildings) have been persistently associated by so many people with this poisonous franchise and, by unavoidable extension, all its downstream toxic effects (which are of course most acutely felt in the UK), such that you can't go into the comments section of any photo of an old British castle without some idiot going “wow, just like Harry Potter!”;

and the fact that - and this is something you might not be aware of if you're not in the UK - so many pretty old places over here, including ones that have absolutely fucking nothing to do with Harry fucking Potter, are becoming increasingly overrun with unlicensed “wizarding world” tat shops aimed at tourists who seem to think that everything about the UK spawned into existence in 1997. There are gorgeous old parts of this country - places that again, I must stress, have nothing at all to do with HP - that I can't walk around without having merch from the Violent Transphobia Franchise shoved in my face from shitty shops dedicated entirely to milking the Violent Transphobia Franchise. As you can imagine, this just feels, you know, great.

There's nothing else I can really compare this to, in terms of the cultural omnipresence of one IP, the extreme and ongoing harm directly financially enabled by that IP, and the way said IP has managed to become so entangled with people's imagining of a country that there are aspects of that country that it has practically managed to claim as its own, as part of its “brand”. It genuinely sickens me.

This is mostly just me ranting, but if there's a “call to action” anywhere here, it's this: please, for the love of god, detach HP from your idea of what the UK is - not out of some “respect for the UK” (we don't deserve that...) but as a much-deserved fuck-you to this franchise, and to the wider cannibalising of cultures by capitalist interests. HP doesn't own, and its author certainly doesn't own, the concept of beautiful old castles, or wonderfully characteristic ancient streets, or students in school being separated into houses, or whatever else. The fact that people around the world associate them with HP do not make them “HP things”; they're just UK things (and often not even exclusively UK things - we're hardly the only country in the world to have old buildings). And frankly, it's insulting to look at a magnificent banqueting hall in a castle with hundreds of years of its own fascinating history and get nothing more out of it than, and take no interest in it beyond, “this reminds me of Harry Potter”.

Genuinely, this country has already been damaged so much by the downstream effects of HP - so many people in the UK have been directly hurt by this shit, and I speak as one of them - and the more people respond to anything “British” by immediately associating it with “Harry fucking Potter”, the more it just rubs salt in the wound.

Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*
