where’d the Buddy name come from

“As I’m sure you’re aware, my name is Stock. However the nickname my Mom gave me when I was an infant... “Buddy Bear” I believe it was, resonated rather well with my Mother- or so she says. Hence they both began calling me Buddy! Alongside my given name, of course.”
