My interpretation has been that Killian and Liam are from a magical world that instead of being stuck in the Middle ages (like the EF) or late 19th century aka steampunk (Untold Stories, the Darlings, etc.), the Jonesās hail from a place thatās stuck somewhere in the Industrial Revolution.Ā
The dialogue about the Pegasus is very telling:
Liam: That is a sail woven from the last remaining feathers of the great creature Pegasus.Ā
Killian: Legend has it that horse could fly.
The land that the Jones family is from is a world that has managed to make an animal go extinct. While mankind has driven animals to extinction throughout its history (Wooly Mammoths, e.g.) the real driving force behind mass extinction of plants and animals was humans developing technology and industrializing.Ā
You have a sextant, something that wasnāt invented until the 1700s:
In order to have a sextant, you need advanced math and an understanding of the world that is far from medieval. This technology isnāt consistent with the technology we see in the EF.Ā
So combine that with the Jolly Roger/Jewel of the Realm, you know that wherever Killian is from, theyāve got advanced technology and math.Ā
Killian also learned Ancient Greek, which is something that would imply that his home realm had some kind of reverence for the Classics, inconsistent with the Middle Ages, where pretty much no one but those connected with the Church would learn Latin, much less Greek - if you wanted to study the Greeks, you probably read Latin translations instead of the Greek). This implies a Enlightenment or after inspired society.Ā
Basically, every since the promo for 3.05 aired, Iāve been convinced that Killian Jones is not from the Enchanted Forest, but in a realm thatās frozen at a time during equivalent to the industrialization of Europe where they had the math, technology and ideologies that are consistent with what we know of Killianās world.Ā
