Eli... it's true... he's hurt and I'm at the hospital with Mom and they just discharged Dad but nobody's saying anything about Blake and he needs to be alright.

I don't know what to do, what if he's not okay, they're talking like he'll never walk again and Mom's crying and Dad's like in shock or something and I don't know what to do. Hasn't there been enough? Can't... can't things just be normal? Why?

Just realizing that I can never send this stuff out, I mean... you've heard me sing, Shar. I can't properly perform my music. I need more people. I know it's stupid, but it's true. I mean, most of these songs were written for a three or four piece band. Ugh, I need a drummer and a bassist and a singer and sometimes a second guitar. Definitely a singer, and maybe someone better at piano/keyboard than I am.

Ryder's second letter to Sharon

Ryder opened his locker to find a note sitting on top of his books, as if it had been slipped in through one of the slats. he smiled, knowing exactly who must have sent it to him, a nervous flutter going through his body. He liked this letter-writing thing, as old-fashioned as it must have been. It gave him enough distance that he didn’t have to worry about the way his brain seemed to completely shut down when Sharon was near. He didn’t sound like a complete idiot in the letters, and handwriting seemed so much more personal than just sending an E-mail or Facebook message. He thought that maybe he understand those Victorians who would write long, formal declarations of love back and forth, because receiving this letter from Sharon had given him this nervous flutter of excited happiness that he hadn’t felt before. It was different from the feeling he actually got when he spoke with her, but it was just as pleasant.

He read the letter in his first period, carefully hiding it from view inside his Algebra textbook. He was amazed that Sharon thought he could send the demo out. He still wasn’t entirely sure of it. He knew that he didn’t want to resign himself to a life of mediocrity without at least giving music a shot. He knew that he wasn’t the best singer, but he just wanted his songs to be heard. He’d think about it more. In his 3rd period English class, he sat writing out his reply to Sharon.

"My Artemis,

I tried to write a poem for you, but that kind of didn’t work. Those are too formal, too structured, and I don’t want anything to be formal or structured. I mean, I like structure, I do, music needs a structure often, but you and I? I wish we could be improv. I think in a lot of ways we’re already in the same key, two parts of a chord. God, I make no sense, but what I’m trying to say is: Do you ever get the feeling like you’re meant to be with someone?

I hate that we have to sneak around behind our parents’ backs. I hate that they still don’t want us to have anything to do with each other. You’d think that they’d be happy that we found something here, but no. I hate that we can’t just hang out anymore. I hate having to lie to my folks when I’m going to see you. It makes me feel almost like I’m trying to hide us, and I’m not. Think you can skip out for a few hours after school without your mom getting mad? I’ll say there’s a last-minute band practice. Meet me outside the west exit after school if you can. If you can’t, I’ll understand. I know this is last minute. I miss you and want to see you so badly.

Before fourth period, Ryder took a detour down the Sophomore hallway, locating Sharon’s locker and slipping a letter between the slats. He didn’t notice the pale kid in the dark jacket who came around the corner in time to see him placing the letter there, too busy rushing to get to his next class, running to get to the other side of the building.

What's going on? I've missed you guys! I finished my project and now I'm going to try and send it to people.

I should have asked one of the singers around here to sing my songs for me though.

Maybe I should wait to send this demo out. Maybe I should wait until I find someone to sing my songs so that they actually sound right... How could I expect someone to hire a songwriter who's music sounds like that? I need to find someone who can sing properly. That's it. I need to do that before I can send them out.

Maybe I can rework the songs for a female singer and have Shar sing them.... or maybe Sam or Eli'll help me...

A Letter to Sharon

*A handwritten letter arrives addressed to Sharon. In the padded envelope along with the letter is a CD. On the CD is a homemade recording of Ryder playing a classical guitar piece  along with another CD with a collection of original songs. One in particular seems to be a song mixing the story of Orion and Artemis with an ode to her.*

Dear Sharon,

I know I haven't been around lately, and that isn't fair to you, especially considering what I told you the last time I saw you. It's true. Ilove you so much that it scares the hell out of me. You are the most beautiful woman I've ever laid eyes on, but I'm scared of pushing things too far. I don't want to scare you off.

Because I know you can do so much better than me. I know you can. You can find a smarter, handsomer guy in the blink of an eye. I am so lucky to have you, but I live constantly afraid of losing you, especially now. Now that our parents don't want us to see each other anymore.

I'm always scared that I'm not going to be able to live up to what you see in me. I'm not the great guitar player. I'm not going to be the awesome musician you seem to think I'll be. I'm just a guy with a few weird hobbies. You, on the other hand, you're a goddess. Beautiful, powerful, kind, caring, but with a core of tough steel that can't be bent or broken. You are the best that the world has to offer. You sing like someone out of this world, you hold your head up high and walk through your life like you can take on anything, and you can.

You'll get your dreams, Sharon, you're already on your way to them. I think I might actually be a little jealous of you for that. As you get closer and closer to your dream, I'm starting to lose mine a little bit. I don't want you to wake up one morning and realize that I'm nothing but some loser. That's why I've been so distant lately, but not anymore.The reason why I've been so distant is because I was making a demo EP. I mean, it's not fantastic, butit's something. I want you to hear it first before I start sending it to labels. Maybe an indie one around here will hire me as a songwriter.
