I’ve shat on Vivziepop’s writing skills (particularly her female characters and the impression she gives me that she has a boyxboy fetish which really goes to the detriment of the characters) on this blog before. I agree with a lot of the popular criticism, but, I’m not ANTI-Vivziepop. I don’t dislike her as a person and I want these franchises to improve, because I do still think despite the flaws, there’s something special about them. But there’s a criticism that I heavily disagree with, and USUALLY I don’t agree with it regarding other issues as well.

It’s the “If Vivziepop was a man writing this, the outage would be so much worse—“

I’m sorry. I just don’t feel that way. Women living in a misogynistic patriarchal society (particularly one where men get away with horrid things like rape and sexism and such) is SO MUCH WORSE than anything this imaginary ass double standard pretends to imply.

“If she were a man—-“ don’t worry about it LOL. What we’re going through in the actual reality of being a woman is so much worse this this supposed “what would happen to her if she were a man?”

I am platonically hugging you (unless you don’t like hugs in which case I’m saluting you) for your post about Stella and forced pregnancy. I literally cannot understand how people see that scene and are not horrified that she was having sex and a pregnancy she didn’t want.

Also Octavia presumably WAS an egg?? They’re birds? I don’t understand why that part was wrong for Stella to say.

You took the words out of my mouth. People honestly fixate on Stolas in this moment when really it’s such a big hint on how horribly treated the goetia women probably are. And even if Octavia wasn’t an egg, (and I do have empathy for Octavia, don’t get wrong) I don’t really expect her to act normal/healthy/loving toward offspring that just didn’t come out of consent. People often talk about Stolas’s experience (even as going as far to say that Stella SA’d him???) but let’s be real. It was likely more traumatizing for the person that had to grow and birth the egg. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Yaoi-fetish and misogyny go long and hard in fandom tradition. -modnote

CW:Forced pregnancy mention, misogyny, SA, family abuse

People don’t talk about it, (or choose not to) but I think Stella never makes proper eye contact with Octavia because it’s too simply painful for her.

Octavia is likely a physical manifestation of Stella’s worst moments plus lack of freedom. That of course being forced sex (which also applies to Stolas, neither of them wanted to do it) and her forced status as a wife and mother. In that light, all the awkwardness and coldness between them makes more sense. And all the more tragic. It doesn’t excuse how she treats Via, who absolutely deserves a good mother-daughter relationship. But it does make sense and if you have any historical frame of reference for women being put through this—you should at least understand it.

…..Of course. This is a generous reading as well because who knows where Vivziepop will go with all this.

In a very important way, I feel bad for both Stolas and Stella. Like of course as a woman in this day and age (with forced birth and reproductive rights being a hot issue) I feel bad for Stella a bit more, but the sex was clearly traumatizing for both of them. it wasn’t consensual, they were both pressured to make an heir, but neither of them are rapists either.

Personally, if I was writing it, I wouldn’t have made them so antagonistic toward each other. They’re both victims in the same boat and have the same common enemy, that being other royals. I probably have gone more so in the lavender marriage direction. Have them bond, mad I don’t mean trauma bond, but actually bond and be each other’s biggest supporters and co-parents.

Because despite my criticisms of Stolas, I love that feathery boi. I have plushies and standees and other merchandise of this man lmao. When I criticize his character, it’s not even really about him. It’s the writer’s choices. It feels like lovable characters with more potential who deserved better.

Disclaimer as always:Of course the show isn’t over and the characters could theoretically go anywhere from here but I’m pessimistic and Vivziepop-critical and uh I know how I feel so.

“It’s okay that Stella is one-note, not all villains needs depth!”

Okay but here’s my opinion—and this is just why that doesn’t work for me. The issue with that is Stella’s story implies many traumatic and realistic issues that women actually go through, like forced birth, forced sex, lack of education sometimes, limited life choices, possibly neglect and PPD if you wanna really ballpark it. We shouldn’t be implying such real issues and then not give it care or nuance. Now, the show isn’t over yet, so it could still happen, but this is more so about that argument itself.

Stolas, Blitzo and Moxxie all have a traumatic past and they’re given a decent variety of funny, emphatic, asshole and serious moments. I’d personally like Stella to get the same.
