Molly struggled with the zipper in the back of her dress, but managed to pull it closed with one final tug. She took a tentative step back, regarding herself somewhat critically in the mirror.
Molly had spent a good deal of her life deliberately avoiding mirrors. She didn’t think she needed yet another reminder of her inadequacy when compared with the gorgeous, graceful girls that seemed to constantly surround her, but tonight was different. Tonight she wore an elegant, iridescent white mask that hid her face. Tonight, she had the advantage of anonymity. Tonight, Molly Hooper was, quite literally, an angel.
The costume was flattering; she was aware of that in a somewhat objective way. The skirt of her white dress ended mid-thigh. It was shorter than almost any clothing she owned, but it was somewhat attractive. For a Halloween costume, it fit better than expected. She was satisfied with that, at least.
Her hair was piled atop her head in a style that was meant to look effortless, but was really the result of several YouTube tutorials and a half bottle of hairspray. Still, Molly was able to appreciate its aesthetic value. While she hadn’t achieved the exact style of the lady in the video (who had promised, by the way, that the look could be achieved quickly and easily. Molly found that to be false advertising.), it was still pretty. The halo perched atop finished the look.
Taking Sherlock’s advice from so many years ago, she had applied lipstick, but found it slightly out of place on her usually bare mouth.
A pair of white, feather wings sat at her back, as longs as her spine. They completed the costume in a graceful way.
Overall, Molly appreciated her appearance. She wasn’t beautiful, by any stretch of the imagination, but she was elegant and put together. It was more than she usually hoped for.
Now, she contemplated the two and half inch heels she expected herself to dance in for the night with a creeping dread.
