       Yes, maybe not right this second but it’s definitely a possibility. It’s something we’ve talked about before. When that’ll happen? I’m not sure, I don’t mind waiting until I know for sure its what he wants too.

He hated himself because this is what she’d come home to. For how long? He wasn’t sure. He’s a mess a broken she’ll of a man trying to grasp how to move on with life without his little brother beside him. She’s a girl who had been selfless and gone away for awhile, years, deep in sleep so that their friend could live. Now, she was up and this is what she had woken up to. He had promised her they’d hit the ‘play’ button and resume right were they had left off but they didn’t.

He hadn’t made love to her and they had barely even kissed. He kept her somewhat at arms length when in truth all he wanted to do was cling onto her. He found himself glad she had gone to see Caroline today because at least she had experienced something good. Something hopeful. Everything he no longer is.

If she’s worried or displeased he doesn’t see it. His vision is too blurry and he’s not tuned into everything like he’s known for being. When she kisses his cheek he closes his eyes to savor it. Opening them again as his blood shot eyes meet hers. Her arm locking with his as she turns them around as they begin to make their way upstairs.

“I- I didn’t get to clean up” he mentions remembering the empty and broken bottles scattered around their bedroom. Allowing her to lead them up the stairs and every so often casting his broken blood shot eyes at her.

        “Don’t worry about that right now, I’ll take care of it later.” Assurance for him while trying to mentally prepare herself for the sight she was about to come across. She couldn’t imagine anything possibly being worse than the current state he was in. Whatever mess had been made, whatever it was he was referring to. There’d be time for all of that later. He was her one and only priority at the moment. 

Just worry about him and everything else, she could deal with later. Things were…difficult. But Elena was more than a little patient. This wasn’t what she had expected to be greeted to when she woke up and the thing was. That was okay with her. As okay as she could be. Not to say that she wanted Damon in pain, but she understood it. He wasn’t himself, he’d need time and she was ready and willing to give him all the time in the world. To wait for however long he needed, simply remaining by his side. Letting him know that he wasn’t alone. 

Up the stairs, down the hall and finally into their bedroom. Elena had to practically bite the inside of her lip to keep herself from sighing. Bottles, lots of empty bottles. Too many for her to do a quick count on. “I’ll get this later, it’s alright.” Feeling the need to assure him again, given the off chance that he might actually try to take care of it now. 

Avoiding the bottles scattered across the floor. It wouldn’t have been a problem. It was however a task that proved to be a little more difficult while having to navigate him as well as herself. Almost there. The bed less than a foot away, and that was one she lost her balance. Not noticing the last bottle that was nearly under the bed completely. Falling backwards onto the bed, and unintentionally pulling him down with her. “Are you okay?”

Somehow Elena had managed to lead Damon up the stairs and down the hallway without any slips and by slips that meant him. She had been so gentle with him. When they had entered their bedroom his gaze was locked on her because he tried to gauge her reaction to what she had been greeted to. He had expected a sigh of disappointment, shake of her head or even her lecturing him, but they never came. Instead she brushed it off as ‘that’s alright.’

No, it’s not. He wants to scream it because it’s not alright. It’s not alright how far he’s fallen and it’s not alright that she loves him too much to not let go. She doesn’t deserve this and yet she’s here. She’s here navigating them past empty bottles and broken shards of glass as she leads them to the bed.

One second he’s standing upright and the next he’s tumbling down. Somehow Elena had tripped and took him along for the ride. Now, he was on top of her and her question was enough to dry a hint of a smile to his usually darkened features.

“I fall on top of you and you’re asking me if I’m okay?” A moment of clarity surfacing as he looks down at the beauty beneath him. His hand reaching out to move a piece of hair behind her ear.

“You’re perfect.”

I want you to get the chance to know that man too. Giving Damon the cure, giving him the chance to have the life he deserved to have. Stefan giving up everything for his brother. For Damon, so long he had grown accustom having to sacrifice for others. And now someone had done the same for him, but it was a price he clearly didn't want to be paid. The life of his brother for his happiness. She couldn't even begin to imagine. He would feel guilty, believe he wasn't deserving of this. Even though he was, Stefan wouldn't have done this if he wasn't. She just wished she could make him see that, make him understand that his brother wouldn't want right see him like this. All easier said than done

His smile, it brought one out of her as well. For a flicker of an instant, he was himself again. And to think it it took was her losing her balance. The simple action of her following over, him falling on top of her. His expression changed almost completely. If she had know it would have had a positive effect, if she were being completely honest, she might have done this on purpose.

"Well. You know me...I can't help but to worry." Something that was true regardless of whether something was going on or not. Trying to sound playful, and there was a false note to her voice. Hopefully even in his state, it's something he wouldn't notice. A loose strand of hair brushed from out of her face. Looking at her in a way that he hasn't in quite some time. Practically holding her breath. What was he doing? What was going through his mind?

Heaven and hell. Good and bad. Dream and nightmare would be the best way to explain how Damon suddenly viewed his life. Elena Gilbert, the love of his life, the reason for living was back in his life. She was the light to his darkness and she was back. His Sleeping Beauty had returned but it wasn’t something that could be fully celebrated because though he had gained something, he had lost as well. Stefan, his little brother was gone. Dead, because apparently from what Elena had shared with him Stefan wanted Elena to get to know the brother Stefan had known back when they were both still human. He said you were the better man, the right man those words haunting him because maybe she believed it but he sure as hell didn’t. In Damon’s eyes he was convinced that the the wrong brother had lived.

Even if he had wanted to take the easy way out and flip the switch he hadn’t had that option anymore. Thanks to Stefan he had joined the land of the living. He was human again which meant he had to endure every overwhelming feeling he experienced. He had hadn’t yet experienced the joy of being human, only the negative aspects of it. The sadness, the despair, the guilt and every other bad feeling consumed him. Even Elena wasn’t enough because each time his eyes laid on her he felt happiness, that happiness instantly turning to guilt because his brother was gone and he didn’t deserve to be happy. Each time he looked at Elena he’d recall the promise that had made to each other partner, husband and father of your kids it was possible for them to have that. Stefan had made a promises to Caroline but they’d go unfulfilled. He was swimming in guilt every second of every day. He barely slept and if he slept it was during the day, when Elena was awake. When they’d retire for bed Damon’s eyes never closed, they remained trained on the Sleeping Beauty in front of him. He was scared, scared she’d fall back into that slumber.

He had isolated himself from others especially Caroline because each time he thought of her he wanted to break down. He had lost a brother but gained a sister and already he was failing at being there for her. Unlike him, Caroline was strong, she was handling the loss of Stefan as best as she could and she was managing to get by. When Elena had told him she was heading over to meet the girls he simply gave a weak smile telling her to have fun meeting the munchkins and then he retreated.

Drowning in guilt, he was sick of it. He was sick of drowning in all these negative thoughts surrounding him. He needed an escape. So,  he turned to the only reasonable thing. Alcohol, he hadn’t even bothered to pour himself a glass, he just took it straight from the bottle. He moved onto the next one and the next one after that fairly quickly. By the time he had reached six he had lost count. He was no longer numb, but drunk. As a vampire his tolerance for alcohol had been high but as a human it was low and now he was feeling the effects of it. Somewhere during the day he had made his way back up the stairs into his bedroom. With his balance lacking he had slipped right on the floor but rather than get back up, he stayed down. Back resting against the side of his bed as he took another swig from the bottle he had retrieved from downstairs.

It took hearing his name a couple of times for him to realize that Elena was home. There’s empty bottles scattered around him, slowly he rises to his feet practically stumbling out of the bedroom.  Anyone who knew him as a vampire and didn’t know he was human would think he was making a joke out of a drunk person as he barely was able to navigate down the steps. But this wasn’t a joke, well it was because this was the result of how he was not only as a human but dealing with the loss of his brother, his own blood.

His eyes are bloodshot read, his vision is blurry but he’s pretty sure he spots her now standing at the end of the steps waiting for him to come down. Offering her a lazy smirk as he mockingly raises his hand and gestures towards himself.

“Present.”

       Alone in the house. She was beginning to realize that was a very real possibility. It’s not like he couldn’t go out by any means, Damon was free to do as he pleased... She just didn’t like not knowing where he was(if he had gone out). Mostly because she had no ideas. Well no ideas, except for maybe one. Back to the crypt, back to Stefan. She gave a quick glance over her shoulder, to her phone. Debating whether or not to call him. In the midst of her debating, the sound of footsteps brought her from out of her thoughts. A sigh of relief slipped from her past her lips. How could she not feel relieved. He was here after all. 

There was a small smile on her features, mostly because she knew he was there...but she hadn’t actually seen him yet. “Hi I w-” Her smile faltered, she stopped moving completely when she finally saw Damon. Slowly making his way down the stairs. Stopping about halfway. He looked so...She couldn’t remember a time he had looked so...broken. The closest she could recall was a moment years ago. After Katherine had returned to town and he learned the truth about her. Her feelings were a lie, that he spent over a hundred years devoted to her...for nothing. Losing his brother, it was by no means comparable to that...but it was the only moment she could think of where he looked almost as bad as he did right now. 

Act like nothing was wrong. Easier said that done. Her expression had already given her away even if she had wanted to pretend everything was okay. Studying him closely, trying to figure out what to do. Worried to make any sudden moves but also wary of him just standing there. Like she wasn’t even sure he’d be able to stay on his feet for much longer. Eyes blood shot, from several feet away it was impossible not to notice how he stunk of alcohol like it was bleeding from his skin. 

Slowly with her focus completely locked on him, she walked up the stairs. Meeting him at where he stood. A gentle kiss upon his cheek in greeting, “Why don’t we go back upstairs.” A suggestion but that didn’t stop her from locking arms with him and trying to turn him around to lead him upstairs. At the very least to get him onto more solid ground. Ground that didn’t risk him toppling over and hurting himself.

The loss of a loved one is painful. The loss of a brother? Unimaginable. A pain that she herself at one point had experienced. A pain that consumed her to the point where the better option was for her to simply not feel at all. She knew now, that turning off her humanity wasn't a true solution. More like a temporary distraction or a way to numb the pain... if only for a little while. But there was a huge difference between when she had lost Jeremy and now, with Damon just having lost Stefan. He wasn't a vampire, that escape all vampires had the option of taking. He no longer had that. Like it or not, his emotions were there lingering for him to confront.

Torn between wanting to give him space and not wanting to spend an instant away from his side. On that day, she chose(or really forced herself) to give him space. Focusing on the one person who loved Stefan almost as much as Damon. Caroline. She was handling it as best as she could. A smile almost always on her face. Remaining as bubbly and optimistic as she could, if only for her daughters. That in itself was another reason she spent the day with her best friend. Her daughters. Her beautiful twin girls. A pleasant surprise but certainly a surprise none the less. So much like Caroline but they also looked so much like Ric.

If Elena were being completely honest, she could have spent even longer with them. She had plenty of time later. For now, now that it was getting later, there was someone else who needed her...

"I'm home!" She called out to the otherwise silent house. No lights on, the sun beginning to fade outside and night quickly approaching. If she didn't know better, she would swear up and down that she was here in the Boarding house alone. Her brows furrowed together. "Damon?" Onto the house she stepped lightly. Her keys and purse set down on a table as she made her way further inside. Maybe, he wasn't here after all. When she left earlier she didn't know he had plans. But for all she knew that had changed.
