“There are no leaks from the palace, don’t be ridiculous.” Pierre knew his words were untrue the moment they left his mouth. “Not any that have my approval, at least,” he added begrudgingly and didn’t like how it made him sound like he had no control over the palace he was supposed to reign from.
At her offer (or threat?) he was silent for a long moment. “And what is in it for you?” he finally asked.
“Perhaps there are no leaks being actively shared with you. It isn’t like you buy your own papers,” Ashildr sighed. “I can send you all the news clippings you’d like from palace insiders,” She didn’t think it was truly all that secretive, but the offices had a way of keeping things very need to know.
“Philippe will not be in a good mood if he’s slighted so badly. Haven’t we both done enough to him. I actually love my husband very much no matter what you think,” She told him honestly. “I will get to see him happy.”

“And given you the chance to turn the invitation down?” Was that it?
“You could actually try to not say anything,” Pierre gave as his exasperated reply, “‘no comment’. Instead of using any chance you get to tell the press exactly what it is you think and make headlines.”
He looked up when one of the maids knocked and entered his study to clear away his tea. Distractely he gave her a wave of his hand and a not. Take it, take it.
“You two wanted nothing to do with royal life anymore. To me, that includes attending coronations. It’s not a family party…” He stopped himself from using her name as if probably wasn’t obvious to the maid, who was carrying her tray to the door, who he was speaking to. Sometimes he wondered just how much the palace staff overheard and knew about them. And then he usually decided he didn’t want to know. “It’s a state function,” he finished once the door had closed behind her. “I wouldn’t have thought you wanted to attend anyway.”
“We say no comment and then palace insiders who are almost definitely inclusive of your wife put out a story about how we did something terrible to you,” Ashildr reminded him. “I won’t let those things be said about Philippe and I won’t keep having him put in the position to have to defend me.”
Ashildr was also very aware of certain understandings between herself and Philippe could raise questions if they didn’t keep the gossip within their control.
“The day your palace stops leaking things about us is the day we stop talking,” That seemed fair enough to Ashildr after everything that had happened.
“I will find a reason not to come if an invitation is extended to Philippe,” She offered as a compromise. “You won’t have to face only inviting him. He will agree to come and we will put out something nice to say about you that day.”
There was vaguely an “or else” attached to the comment, but she didn’t go quite that far.

“You cannot be serious.” Pierre ran a hand over his face, the one that wasn’t holding his phone against his ear. “You two absolutely cannot be serious.” Why was it always Philippe and Ashildr? Couldn’t they just leave him in peace? They had wanted to leave so why couldn’t they stay gone instead of seemingly making it their mission to make his life difficult - as if that role wasn’t already reserved for his wife and parliament.
“You can’t give interviews about how horrible we - I! - have been to you and then complain when you don’t get an invitation for the coroantion. I don’t know what you want anymore.” Actually Pierre wouldn’t have minded at least Philippe to attend but Sophia had been hurt in her pride and was adament. At some point he had to remember that he was the one who was meant to make the decisions but he’d learned quickly that a displeased Sophia was a Sophia he didn’t like to be around.
“I’ll wait while you tell me what things either of us have said publicly or otherwise that was untrue,” Ashildr was keeping her voice as level as possible not least of all because she hadn’t told Philippe who was on the phone. She knew it would only upset him and frankly, there was probably a reason that Pierre called her and not him. “Lies that cover up how awful you actually were don’t count.”
She sighed, “I don’t know what you expect of us. Do you think we don’t get bombarded with questions as soon as these things happen? If you hadn’t wanted the drama, you should have just invited us. Aren’t we meant to be pretending we don’t hate each other.”
Ashildr wasn’t even sure if they did hate each other. It was getting hard to tell where anything stood anymore.
“We’re a world away, but I won’t have rampant speculation that I refused to go or any other nonsense your offices float. You should have invited us, Pierre. You know it. He’s your brother. He did nothing wrong.”

Pierre gave her a weary smile. “It’s starting to sound like we have no plan B at all.”
He sighed. “I don’t know what we should to.” Not for the first time he wished he could ask his father for advice. “Our family have ruled over Genovia for generations, since we gained independence. I don’t want to be the one under whom that comes to an end.” But not at the risk of his family. “You will not want to hear this but … perhaps you and Grabielle should leave, if things get worse. Take Philippe and Maman with you.”
“I don’t believe it is that bad.”
Ashildr realized she might be wearing rose-colored glasses. She knew this was weighing on Pierre’s mind, but she didn’t want to think about the worst possibilities.
“I trust our people better than that, Pierre,” She hoped that trust wasn’t misplaced. “I don’t think they would harm us even if the time comes when we cannot stay.”
Things were tumultuous, but she did not want to believe the worst.
“What can we do to calm matters? Someone must have made suggestions.”

Pierre threw an uncertain glance up towards the palace, squinting against the midday sun. “No, probably not,” he conceded, more because that was what he wanted to believe, rather than the nagging gut feeling that something was different this time.
Voices against the monarchy had always existed, but never before so loud, so divisive, and so prevalent in the political discourse. Ans what with the election coming up…
“I simply worry if the Romanovs and Louis XIV thought the same thing…”
He brushed a gentle hand over Gabrielle‘s blonde, curly hair we will stay. The last thing he wanted was for anything to happen to her or Ashildr. “But it’s good to have a Plan B in your side of the family. Just in case.”
“Phillippe once suggested to me while drunk that he should run for prime minister,” Ashildr smirked a little. “I suppose that could be Plan B as well,” She realized that very much wasn’t a solution - or even legal - but it was a more amusing thought than any bit of reality.
“There are rumors about what my family did or didn’t do for the Romanovs,” Ashildr reminded him. “It may be wise to only rely on ourselves,” She wasn’t entirely sure what that would mean, but she knew that the current unrest was unsettling at best.
“I do not think we mean to put up a fight if it should come to it,” Perhaps she was wrong. She didn’t want to outright suggest they simply walk away or negotiate some sort of stepping down, but she thought - or hoped - that would be more likely than a war.
“What would you have us do?”

“No, no, ma chérie, don’t touch.” Pierre gently grabbed the hand of the 1 year old he was holding in his arms to stop her from accidentally hurting herself. “They have thorns, see? They’re pointy. Only look.”
“Look,” Gabrielle babbled, trying to copy her father’s French.
“Yes, only look, that’s right. See how beautiful they are? Just like you.” He pressed a kiss to her chubby cheek. “Whenever you see roses, I want you to think of home.”
The sound of footsteps made him turn his head and he spotted Ashildr walking down the gravel path inbetween the roses towards them. “Ah, it’s maman, look,” he pointed out, bouncing Gabrille gently who let out an enthusiastic “Look!”
Chuckling a little, Pierre turned away from the roses to head up the path and meet his wife halfway.
If only he could hide in the garden with Gabrielle forever, that would be ideal. His heart felt heavy with worry but here, with their daughter discovering the world around her for the first time, all of it felt far away. Their safe haven. To think they might have to leave it all behind was too much to bear.
“Any news?” he asked Ashildr once they reached her and smiled when Gabrille immediately reached out for her mother, wanting to be held by her instead.
Ashildr had forced a sort of tense smile for the sake of the servants and everyone else, but it turned into something far more genuine was Gabrielle reached for her. She gathered her daughter up into her arms before turning her attention to Pierre.
“I think it rather depends on what we’re considering doing,” Ashildr admitted. “I had a decent conversation with my family, but all that can ensure is that we have somewhere to go.”
That wasn’t always a given. Political unrest inevitably meant that any other country that was involved was going to have to consider any potential fallout. Ashildr might be a member of the British Royal Family by blood, but that didn’t necessarily mean much.
“We would likely need to get there on our own, and it would mean leaving,” That was a conversation that they weren’t really having. “Perhaps we should just wait things out. It doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a war,” She admitted. This was more about tax dollars and property and what have you.
“You don’t think that would actually happen, do you? Something more than just debating about our titles?”
One wonders what the pair of you will get up to next.

"Indy, you can't threaten to tell people every one of my secrets just because you don't like being treated like a child," Ashildr smirked at him all the same, not actually that concerned.
"I wouldn't have to yell at you if you weren't acting like a moron, would I? You're just like your father. You realize that, yes?"
Indy's mouth snapped shut. At the chastising as well as being accused of acting like his father. In his opinion, he was completely justified in his ranting with Ashildr disappearing on him - and his father - and then showing up again like nothing had happened. As much as he was often annoyed with his father, he didn't want to actually see him hurt.
"I'm not acting like a child," came his slow and carefully enunciated response, reigning in his temper. "You just could have mentioned you had something you needed to take care of instead of just leaving us in the dark. Did you know Dad actually visited me - voluntarily - to see if you'd mentioned where your destination was? He never does that!"
Ashildr did feel bad. She felt more than bad about it. She was deflecting far more than she was planning to actually deal with what she had done.
“I warned Henry a long time ago that these sorts of things tend to happen if he wants to be with me,” Sure, she knew that didn’t make up for anything at all. Of course, it didn’t.
“Did you two manage to actually spend some time together? If you did then maybe my diabolical plan worked all along.”
She paused, “I came back. That’s what matters.”
