Vulture stomach acid is so powerful that it can kill anthrax and many other deadly diseases.

So when they consume the carcass of a creature that has died of disease, they actually destroy the disease within it too!

So yes vultures are 100% holy creatures because they not only eat the dead, but protect the living from death.

So, lichens, what are they? Tp put it simply, they are a fungus that hosts a green algae or cyanobacterial photobiont. They protect the photobiont, and the photobiont provides them with energy via photosynthesis. And yes, most lichens also have other symbiotic associates, but we’re keeping it simple here. What’s great is you can often tell which type of photobiont a lichen is hosting by it’s color! (And yes, there are definitely exceptions to this, but we are being simplistic here today) The darker and more bluish the lichen, the more likely it is that it hosts a cyanobacteria, and the more brightly colored or pale it is, the more likely it is that it hosts a green algae! So just by looking at K. merrillii, you could make an educated guess that it hosts a cyanobacteria, and you’d be right! This foliose lichen has broad, long lobes growing closely to the substrate surface and curling upwards. The upper surface is dark olive to black in coloration, and often dull and ridged in texture. The lower surface is paler brown and covered on simple, black rhizines. Apothecia start out concave, and become more convex as the grow larger. They have a prominent margin and a dark brown disc. K. merrillii grows on bark or wood, and has only been found in temperate-boreal forests in western North America and central Spain. My guess is that more investigations and surveys are needed to identify the true extent of their range. Sadly a lot of these dark lichens are easily overlooked and go unnoticed, so remember to keep your eye out for cool lichens out there in the world! And consider reporting them to any number of mycology groups/naturalist groups near you.
