Started Hyakka Hyakurou at last~ The interface is pretty, and thankfully the font is easy to read. It’s nice that Enju has sprites in many of the scenes so far. Can’t show it in the screenshots but the forest background actually has animated falling leaves. Everything looks so crisp, and I’m enjoying the game so far ^^

Trainer Tips:
For all the trainers playing Pokemon Gen1 for the first time!
Special Atk. and Special Def. are bundled up into a single stat, so keep that in mind when deciding what Pokemon to use!
There’s no breeding in these games, but there’s also no Effort Values, Natures, IVs, Abilities, or even gendered pokemon. So it’s not a big deal.
Critical hits and One Hit-KO moves are based on a pokemon’s speed here! The faster the user the more likely they are to land!
Psychic Types are broken as heck, Ghost moves are ineffective here, so get yourself a Starmie, Jynx, Hypno, or Alakazam (especially the latter two since they’re pure-psychic) if you’re having trouble!
FOCUS ENERGY AND DIRE HIT DON’T WORK, they’re bugged and decrease your Crit. ratio instead of boosting it so avoid these moves like the plague!
You can trick an NPC’s pokemon with non-damaging psychic moves (agility, amnesia) to spam their moves if you use a poison type!
If you chose Charmander and are having a tough time against Brock, take advantage of his Onix’s Bide to decrease its stats (Sand-attack, Growl, Leer/Tail-whip). It unleashes nothing because you didn’t damage it and you can now chip away at it when it tries to use Screech or Tackle and spam the non-damaging moves when it’s using Bide.
If you’re experienced in Gen1, feel free to add stuff to this list to give a little hand to the new kids haha (or let them suffer, I guess… your choice XD)
Bug and Poison are super-effective against each other. Ice does neutral damage to Fire.
Bind, Wrap, Constrict, Clamp, and Fire Span have an extremely broken mechanic which basically allows you to wail on a slower opponent with impunity. Per Bulbapedia: “Bind does damage for 2-5 turns… During this turn duration, the target will be unable to attack, and if the user of Bind attacks before the target when used, the target will be unable to attack during that round as well.” That so many turns are passing with your foe helpless also makes certain status conditions deadly - Toxic, anyone?
The ten Pokemon with the highest Special stats are Mewtwo (154), Alakazam (135), Gengar (130), Exeggutor, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres (125), Kadabra, Tentacruel, and Magneton (120). Pokemon like Chansey (105) and Gyarados (100) are also considerably more dangerous for it.
-Moves are categorized as physical or special by their type, not by whether or not they make physical contact. i.e., all water-type moves are special, all ghost-type moves are physical, etc.
-If you started with Charmander or Pikachu, your best bet for beating Brock is to use either a Butterfree with Confusion or a Nidoran with Double Kick. You can also catch Mankey on Route 22, but only in Yellow.
-If you’re planning on using the Mew glitch, don’t battle the youngster with the Slowpoke on Route 25 yet. You’ll need him later.
-Moves like Slash and Razor Leaf are almost guaranteed to get a critical hit every time you use them.
If you use Toxic and then Leech Seed on a pokemon, the Leech Seed’s damage will increase every turn instead of the Toxic’s damage.
The only Bug-type move that deals a decent amount of damage is Pin Missile but only two pokemon can learn it. Beedrill and Jolteon.
As mentioned above, Ghost moves don’t work on Psychic types, but what is also important is that Psychic will be super effective against your ghosts.
There are NO RUNNING SHOES, you can get the bike in Cerulean City, but you first have to go to the pokemon fan club in Vermillion City.
Your bag space will be limited, drop off items in your PC that you don’t need. Key Items in particular you can drop off until you need them.
To use out of battle moves, such as Cut, you need to go to your party and select the move instead of being able to just press A when in front of the tree.
-THERE IS NO HEALING CABIN ON THE SS ANNE. You can get off the boat and heal using the Pokemon Center.
-Gust and Bite are both normal-type moves! This makes grinding bugs much raider, since Spearow are rare and Pidgey don’t learn flying STAB until ridiculously late.
-The EXP Share for this game is called EXP All and works similarly to Gen VI EXP Share in that it splits experience up for all members of the party.
-If a Pokemon gets a KO with Hyper Beam they do NOT have a recharge period! Lance is scary but with Gen I Hyper Beam he’s terrifying.
-Buying too many of each kind of Poke Ball can actually crash your game. Try to carry less than 30 at a time.
-In Yellow, make sure Pikachu does not stay off screen for too long unless he’s in the PC. Glitches abound can and will destroy your save.
-Sometimes attempting to catch a Pokemon may result in your ball “missing the Pokemon”. This is basically the same as a ball not shaking and the Pokemon breaking out as in later games.
-Charizard cannot learn Fly in Red or Blue, but can in Yellow. It is the only Flying-Type move Charizard can learn.
-The only Dragon-Type move is Dragon Rage and one of the only Ghost-Type moves is Night Shade. Both do fixed amounts of damage but are not affected by resistances/weaknesses.
-Your PC box still holds 30 Pokemon but MUST be MANUALLY SWITCHED before being allowed to catch more Pokemon.
-Mewtwo cannot be caught by other Poke Balls and must be caught with a Master Ball
-THERE IS NO MOVE DELETER. BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHO YOU TEACH WHAT MOVES TO. HM’S CANNOT BE FORGOTTEN AT ALL.
-The Pokedex will staight up lie to you about where certain Pokemon can be found. It will not show Pokemon in Cerulean Cave and will not show where you can find Pokemon via fishing. Serebii has accurate locations for most of this.
-Held Items, Natures and Abilities do not exist.
-OHKO moves like Fissure/Horn Drill will always fail if you are slower than the opponent and if the opponent is higher level than you.
-Pokemon will not thaw out of being Frozen naturally. You either use an Ice Heal/Pokemon Center or they’re stay that way.
-Critical Hit ratios are based on a Pokemon’s speed. The faster it is, the more likely it’ll get a crit. Combine with Slash/Razor Leaf to have 100% critical hits.
-Levels matter slightly less than in normal games. It’s completely possible to defeat the Elite Four with a 20 level difference in their favour with proper type matchups.
Good luck, Trainers!
