The shadows moved and the sounds Nick couldn’t hear were one of a struggle. Then one shadow threw the other and jumped on top of it, ripping at the shadow’s torso with bloody results. Then the surviving shadow lifted its head, looked towards Nick, and ran. It was the monster, or what Nick might eventually recognize as a Hyde because of the subject he taught. Hydes were the only creature banned from the halls of Nevermore, a place that advertised as a place for all misfits and outcasts. They were dangerously strong, as Nick had just seen with his own two eyes. They weren’t taught at Nevermore either, so more research would need to be done for someone that wanted to know more about them. Hydes were also incredibly fast, as proven by the fact that this one got away before Nick could chase it down. This was a situation that Nick was definitely going to need to go back into campus to get some help for. He’d already almost been killed himself and by all accounts, someone else was dead or in need of some serious help.
Seeing the evolution of what happened in the shadows sent chills through Nick’s spine. Taking a deep breath, he began to back away slowly, taking several steps before turning on his heel to race back towards the staffing quarters, knowing he would find the Dean there. Reaching her home he began knocking frantically, glancing continuously over his shoulder though willing himself to remain as calm as possible. Once the door was opened, he launched into a near-frantic description of everything he had seen. Stepping back, he allowed the Dean to take charge, following her as they moved to collect the doctor and head towards the scene.
Principal Weems had a small home on campus property to allow her to be near at all times, as most of the staff at Nevermore did. When Nick came knocking, she answered the door quickly because it sounded urgent. The description of events certainly was, and she called the doctor to meet them there so that help would be there faster. Together, she rushed with Nick back to the scene and they walked into the woods, on the lookout for anything dangerous. When they got to the place where Nick had seen the shadowy figure attacked, there was nothing. Whoever it was, they were gone. Pursing her lips, Larissa Weems turned to look at Nick and signed, “What did you see?”
