Welcome to the Women in Film Bingo 2026!

If you've been following on from previous posts, this is the main bingo card for this year's challenge, with a total of 16 prompts. You can fill in as much of the card as you want/are able to: whether you complete a line or a full house, or a scattering of random ones you like, this challenge's goal is to get people watching more films by and about women! (As said before, transphobia will be blocked immediately: trans women are women.)

Most of the prompts are solidly self-explanatory and, hopefully, broad enough that you'll be able to adjust what you watch to your own personal taste, but I encourage you to step a little outside of your comfort zone, too! The idea is to watch one film for each prompt, but overlap is inevitable, so if you find a film that fits into multiple you can choose to count it for one or the other (or both!).

The only rule of this challenge is that the film should be written by, directed by, or led by women. Other than that, genre, time period, and everything else is up to you!

A few explainers:

Each colored square is linked to one of the three satellite bingo cards (genre, world tour, and awards) that run parallel to this one: to complete this one, pick any prompt from one of those cards! They're designed to be optional, so you don't have to complete the whole card to check off the square!

The IMDB/Letterboxd Top 250 prompt is to watch any film from those respective lists: you can find both on Letterboxd here and here. There's a companion list for the Letterboxd Top 250 including only films directed by women here.

The 2026 release prompt covers any film that releases in your home country (you can count festival releases if you like, or you can stick to theatrical release) in 2026 - if, like me, you're one of the tens of people worldwide that doesn't live in the US, films like Hamnet which released there in December may not come out until 2026, so would count for the purposes of this challenge.

It's Oscars day! Today we'll be looking at the films nominated this year that count towards our Awards Season bingo card, though you're free to include other award ceremonies and nominees if you so choose!

Prompt in Focus: Pre-1970

It's Women's History Month in the USA, so for this week's prompt focus, we're looking at films released before 1970! For as long as people have been making films, women have been directing them. Here are a few early female directors and films to add to your watchlist:

Agnés Varda directed around 80 films in her lifetime: try Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962), following two hours in the life of a singer as she waits for results from a medical test in 1960s Paris, or Le Bonheur (1965), about a married man starting an affair with a postal worker. Also in the 1960s, surrealist comedy Daisies (1966), by Věra Chytilová, marked a milestone in the Czech New Wave.

Going back a little further, in the 1950s we had Ida Lupino and Muriel Box, two of the most prolific female directors in the American and British film industries respectively at the time. For Lupino, Outrage (1950) was one of the earliest films to discuss rape, and The Hitch-Hiker (1953) is one of the only classic American noir films directed by a woman. As for Box, Eyewitness (1956) is another early crime thriller, and Street Corner (1954) follows three woman police officers.

Want to go even earlier? Check out early Hollywood director Dorothy Arzner, whose career spanned the silent era in the 1920s through to the 1940s, or Mädchen in Uniform, one of the earliest openly lesbian films in history. And if you really want to take a deep dive into film history, try Alice Guy-Blaché, widely considered to be the first female director in history!

The categories have been left deliberately broad, so pick any country and any time period you'd like within each one you complete - like the other three bonus cards, this one runs parallel to the main card which I'll be posting later today. You can either interpret this card as films set in each area or made within each area, or mix it up!

As always, the only rule is that it should be written by, directed by or led by women. Other than that, the world is your oyster with this one!

Our second bingo card for this year's Women in Film challenge is here!

In honour of the Oscar shortlist coming out this week and a host of other nominations announcements this month, we're focusing on awards season! Whether you're an avid awards season follower or someone who doesn't particularly mind either way (and I am both, depending on the occasion), we're looking for award winners, nominees, festival favourites, and the films that didn't win but should have. You don't have to limit yourself to the Oscars here - any award will work, big or small, as will any festival.

A couple explanations here: the "unofficial" awards category refers to any form of recognition that isn't exactly conventional - see the Letterboxd Oscars, other audience-vote awards, or anything else you think should qualify. It's up to you! The 'technical' category refers to any category to do with the more technical aspects of filmmaking: cinematography, sound design, production design or costume design. "Awards firsts" are for any 'first woman to win/be nominated for' in whichever category you choose. And finally, the 'should have won' category is for any film YOU think should have won in any category and didn't.

This is another one of the three bonus bingo cards for this year's challenge - the main bingo card will be posted on Dec. 30th, and you can choose to complete all or some of the bonuses, or just stick to the main challenge. Here is our first bingo card for the Women in Film bingo 2026!

This one is focused on genre: the goal is to watch a film for each of the genres listed above. Like with all other bingo cards for this challenge, you can interpret each genre however you choose, and feel free to mix them up if you want! Not a fan of hardcore horror? Try comedy-horror, or something that leans more towards the thriller side of things! Find a rom-com? Classify it as romance, comedy, or both!
